《The Whipping》Chapter 28

"Rosalina?" I mumbled, gazing up at her in shock as she looked at me through the bars of the cell, tears dribbling down her face.

"I'm so sorry Eliza," sobbed Rosalina, covering her mouth with her hand, her entire body trembling.

Joanna shook her head, raising her eyebrows. "How does it feel Eliza? To have someone you thought was your friend betray you? I bet it sucks."

I growled, giving Joanna a hard glare; her response being only a snarky smirk.

"I'm sorry Eliza, she has my Mother. She told me she'd release her if I did what she said," cried Rosalina, dropping her gaze and squeezing her eyes shut.

"And since I'm a woman of my word, here," grunted Joanna as she sauntered up to my neighbouring cell, unlocked it and threw the doors open, tugging out a frail woman. She shoved the woman towards Rosalina, who cried with joy as she pulled her into her arms, hugging tightly.

"Now get out, and don't come back. If either of you say anything to anyone, I will personally hunt you down and kill you," threatened Joanna, snarling.

Rosalina turned to me, gazing into my eyes with her teary and broken ones, her brows furrowed and her mouth set in a firm line. "What are you going to do with her?"

"I said get out!" growled Joanna, causing Rosalina to duck her head, and pull her Mother out of the room along with her.

So much was going through my head. Although Rosalina was younger than me, I considered her a friend of mine. The day I had seen her out in the woods, bruised and bloody, scared for her life, I knew I had to do something to save her, but she only betrayed me in return. I had wanted the best for Rosalina. I wanted her to be able to start a new life with a pack who would love and care for her. I had wanted to show her what life could really be like when you were surrounded by people who loved you.

I saw the regret and pain in her face as she left. I knew she was hurting, but when it came to family, they would always come first. I knew Rosalina did what she had to do to be reunited with her Mother, even if it meant throwing me under the bus.

"Maybe you should learn a lesson from this Eliza, you really can't trust anyone," said Joanna, picking at her nails. "Especially your beloved mate, Alpha Logan."

My eyes widened at the mention of Logan, and I furrowed my brows, staring out at Joanna's dark tall figure, trying to make out her expression. "Why do you say that?"

Joanna chuckled, stepping closer to the cell, her cool breath slightly fanning my face as she spoke. "You know who I am, so I'm guessing Logan has mentioned some things to you. However, did you know that your mate is the reason his own brother is dead?"

I attempted to swallow, but my throat was bone dry, slowly closing up, causing me to take bigger intakes of breath.

"She's lying."

I furrowed my brows at the soft voice, gazing past Joanna's left shoulder into the cell opposite mine, seeing a small light haired female figure sitting cross legged on the floor, her side leaning up against the cell bars.

Joanna growled, stomping over to the cell and kicking at the bars, causing the entire room to shake; debris falling from the ceiling. "Shut up!"

I pushed myself back from the bars, not liking Joanna's aggressive side, but I knew it was something I was probably going to see more of.

"The only reason you're not dead is because I want you to suffer!" snarled Joanna, kneeling down to cup the female's chin, pulling her closer before forcefully shoving her back, sending her falling backwards, hitting her head on the hard concrete floor.

"You're pathetic."

Joanna snarled loudly, clearly not liking the disrespect. She reached her hands through the bars, grabbing the girl by the neck, yanking her up. "I swear to God Emily, I will kill you right now if you don't shut the hell up!"

"Emily?" I whispered, my eyes widening as I peered closer through the bars, trying to make out the girl's figure as best I could, but the lack of light was making everything just fuzz together, becoming nothing but jumbled up shapes.

Joanna dropped Emily, causing her to land with a loud thud, before walking back towards me, shaking her head, her eyes raging. "Jordan and I were a great couple. We loved each other, and we had every detail of our future planned out, but then, he met her."

Emily huffed to herself, causing Joanna to grit her teeth, closing her eyes and pinching the bridge of her nose, trying to calm herself down.

"He wouldn't speak to me, he wouldn't even look at me. He said it hurt him to see me heartbroken, and he wanted me to act as if he never existed, which is hard to do when he's about to become your Alpha. I was making coffee for everyone, Logan walked past and offered to take some up to Jordan and Emily since he was heading upstairs anyway. I knew that was my chance."

I studied Joanna's distant expression. Her eyes glazed over as if she was re-living the story she was telling me, frozen like a statue with her arms folded over her chest.

"I specifically told him that Emily's was the left cup and Jordan's was the right, since Emily took sugar in hers. The next day, I woke up to screaming and sobbing. I was expecting them to announce Emily's death, but they didn't, instead, they announced the death of our future Alpha, Jordan Black."

Joanna swallowed harshly, her stare becoming even colder, as if she was pushing all the sadness back into her, refusing to allow it to re-surface.

"It was then that I realised that Logan had mixed up the cups. I wasn't trying to kill Jordan, I was trying to kill her," mumbled Joanna, turning towards Emily and growling, her entire body trembling.

"You poisoned the drink," I said, my mouth hanging open.

Joanna smirked, cocking her head.

"But Emily is supposed to be dead. Everyone thinks she committed suicide."

Joanna chuckled. "Who do you think wrote the suicide note? I ran away, but then came back for Emily. I wanted her to suffer, just like I was."

"What about Rosalina? What does she have to do with this?" I asked.

"I've always said to myself that when Logan found his mate, I would take her away from him, so he has to live with the constant heartache I have to live with, when the love of your life dies. Now, Logan made it pretty obvious that something was up when the first Whipping took place. Why would he stop the event? To save a girl he'd never met before? It seemed set in stone to me, but then, he announced he was organising another event to find his mate, so I doubted myself. I had to get someone on the inside, and that's where Rosalina comes into this. I found her and her mother, so I attacked them, threatening to kill Rosalina's mother unless she did what I said. She was a spy Eliza, and you trusted her so easily, it really helped me out a lot."

I sat on the cold floor with my head in my hands, shaking my head.

Joanna sighed, flicking her long dark hair behind her. "You know, you and Logan almost had me fooled, but, I kept Rosalina in there because I knew if you were mates, you would slip up eventually, and I was right. You confirmed my suspicions for me."

"You're sick," I spat. "Logan had nothing to do with Jordan's death, and now you're blaming him because you're the reason Jordan's dead. It's your fault."

Joanna growled, tugging me forwards by my hair. "Don't make me kill you now, I want Logan to watch, so I can see his face when he watches you die slowly in front of him, knowing there's nothing he can do to save you."

I pulled against Joanna's grasp and she eventually let go, chuckling to herself. She stood in front of my cell, glaring at me for a few more seconds, before making her way out of the room, the sound of her feet against the steel tunnel exit eventually dissipating.

"Emily?" I whispered, noticing her lift her head up, sighing.

"You're Logan's mate then?" she asked, moving closer to the bars so I could just about make out her facial features. She racked her hands through her matted blonde hair, shaking her head and sighing.

"Yeah. Emily, everyone thinks you're dead."

Emily nodded, running her petite hand down her dirty face. "I know, Joanna threatened to kill everyone I cared about if I didn't leave with her. At the time, I didn't see a reason to live, so I went with her to save my family. My mate had just died, I had nothing to live for. She wrote a suicide note for me claiming I jumped off a cliff and into the depths of a waterfall, that way, there would be a lot of reasons why my body was never recovered, and it would be believable. They inject me every couple of days with wolfsbane to keep me weak, making the job of keeping me locked away much easier for them. I'm unconscious a lot of the time, and when I am awake, I feel so weak I can hardly move."

I furrowed my brows, shaking my head. My thoughts raced back to the moment where Theo and had been attacked, and we had been injected with wolfsbane to stop us from swimming our way out of the river.

That was her.

Theo was basically dead because of her...

Just in case anyone forgot, Emily is Jordan's mate.
