Hyejin, Lyla, and the Chief walked into the hospital room.
"Park, can you handle this yourself? I don't wanna crowd the guy" He said. Hyejin sighed, shaking her head.
"I don't want to" She mumbled. He nodded.
"Ok... Let's just go in all together. " He said. Lyla cleared her throat.
"I uh... I'm gonna go talk to the doctor to see his progress. You two should go in." Lyla mumbled, before walking away. Hyejin sucked in the air before walking into the room.
"Sir? W-we're the FBI. I'm Detective Park, our Chief. Is it ok if we ask you a few questions?" I asked. He looked up at her.
"I-i'm not dead?" He asked. She smiled.
"No sir, You are alive. You were shot... At first, we thought you were gone but you were just unconscious." She explained. He nodded.
"I was shot... and I lived." He mumbled. Hyejjin became a bit impatient.
"Sir, do you remember anything from that day?" She asked.
"I uh... I was assigned by them. They told me that they were expecting a shipment of valuable items from the Landslow family. A very rich family." He explained.
"What were you assigned to do?" The chief asked.
"Well, I was assigned to make sure that no police entered the door. Because they keep their management and valuables in the secret room upstairs." He said. Hyejin furrowed her eyebrows, looking up from her notebook.
"Wait so the person who did this is only out to do what, collect valuable items from rich families?" She asked. He shrugged.
"I just know that I and a few other guys have been assigned to protect that building. And I was warned that they usually get rid of the guards once we figure out their identity, but I didn't think they would actually shoot me." He explained.
"Why do you keep saying they? I thought one person ran this organization" She asked.
"No one knows who they are. We just call them they." He said. Hyejin sighed, shoving her notebook in his pocket.
"Is there anything else you can tell us that can help us?" She asked.
"I do remember hearing one of Their head guards talking about someone name Na Jaemin. How they had to annihilate him. How they are in the way." He said. Hyejin looked up at her chief and then back at the guy.
"T-thank you for your time," He said, following Hyejin out of the room.
~~~
Our unknown killer is moving fast, and we need to stop him. Park, present" The chief said. Hyejin looked up, with a distressed, exhausted expression on her face.
"It's alright. Lyla present." He asked Lyla, glaring at Hyejin.
"The unidentified killer is most likely in their younger ages of 25-35. They are most likely single with a very lenient job. They are after a series of valuable objects from a wealthy family in Europe called the Landslows. However, due to the security of said objects, the killer works in a group... suspects known to call the killer 'they' because they don't know their real identity. So we might be dealing with a group of people or one person not strong enough to carry this plan on her own."
"Thank you, Lyla. Alright with this information I need you all to get back to work.
Hyejin sat at her desk, staring at the computer screen. After the events of last night, Jaemin was being held in jail without any question until the next day. She was so distracted that she didn't notice Lyla walking over to her desk.
"Hey. You won't believe it. The guy that Jaemin killed-" Hyejin interrupted her by slamming her hand on the table.
"Can you stop saying that? Can you stop making him the enemy?" She asked. Lyla furrowed her eyebrows.
"Hyejin. I know you don't think that he did it... but he did. He was standing over his dead body. The weapon was right next to him... I mean all the signs point to him being the kil-"
"Shut up" Hyejin mumbled.
"Excuse me?" Lyla retorted. Hyejin spun around, turning to face them.
"I said shut up. Shut the hell up! For once second stop talking about how bad he is and start talking about the good things he did! So if you have anything that you wanted to say to me about... anything that all then say it. But if you say one more thing about Jaemin, so help me God I will not be afraid to hurt you!" She yelled, causing the other people in the department to stare.
"Agent Park!" The chief said, causing Hyejin to look up at him. He beckoned her over into his office. She glared at Lyla one more time before walking into his office, slamming the door.
"You should have heard what Lyla said. They said that Jaemin was a killer and he's a horrible person. A-and that can't be right I mean he was the one who found the stolen key card!" She explained. He crossed his arms.
"How do you think it was stolen in the first place?" He asked. She furrowed her eyebrows.
"Because there is a mole in our department"
"And you are that mole" He claimed, causing Hyejin to scoff.
"So after all these years of me trying to make Jaemin good, I make him look bad? Now, why would I do that?" She asked. He shook his head.
"You aren't necessarily the mole but he was using you to get the key card." He said. I scoffed.
"How would he even get a key card? Who's card did he even get!?" She argued.
"Yours" He mumbled. Hyejin's shoulders dropped.
"W-what?" She asked. The chief sat up.
"While you and Jaemin were... hanging out, he swiped your key card, getting into the office." He explained. Hyejin remembered the night she and Jaemin had sex. She couldn't believe it. She was being used. And she lost something important to her. Something she cherished. Something she wanted to lose with the right guy.
"I know you always try to see the good side of everyone. Ever since you were younger you would always do that. But now you need to see reality. The reality of people." He explained. Hyejin shook her head, grabbing her bag before running out of the building.
~~~
Jaemin sat in the corner of the cell, staring at the clock.
"Inmate. You have a visitor." The cop said. Jaemin stood up, furrowing his eyebrows.
"W-who?" He asked. Hyejin appeared from the corner walking up to him.
"Jaemin, It's me, Detective Park. Follow me." Hyejin said, causing Jaemin to look puzzled. He just went along with it, following her into the private interrogation room. She locked the door, falling into the chair with tears streaming down her face.
"Hyejin! Wh-what happened?" He asked. She scoffed, looking up at him.
"You've been using me, haven't you?" She asked. He shook his head.
"Hyejin-"
"Jaemin I am trying so hard to believe in you but all signs are pointing to you being in trouble here" she explained. He shook his head.
Advertisement
"Hyejin, I'm not allowed to say anything about it." He said. She sobbed.
"I- I don't um... I've been helping you all this time, Jaemin. Why would you do this to me?!" She asked. He kicked the chair, startling her.
"I didn't do anything for you! You came here trying to be Mother freaking Theresa and be nice to me and help me. Who the hell asked? Definitely not me! So please, enlighten me. Why are you still here? Why do you try so hard to fight for me? Why do you care about me?"
"Because I'm in love with you!" She yelled. He looked up at her.
"I have been in love with you for so long. I just... I couldn't be in love with a criminal because everyone said it was wrong and it couldn't happen. And they were right. Y-yes I was trying to help you so you could change, but I guess I was also thinking of my own selfish reasons." She claimed.
"Why would you love me? I'm... I'm nothing" He mumbled. She scoffed.
"You may think that, but you are everything to me. I- I know this sounds stupid, but there were days where you didn't come in and I would just pray that you did do something stupid just so I could see you!" She cried. He scoffed.
"I love everything about you! Even the things I hate, I love. I love your smile. I love how when people believe in you, you actually try. I love how every time I walk in you just start flirting. I love it not because of your flirting with me but because you notice me! I love you and sometimes I just don't care about what you do because I am so in love with you that I'm willing to turn a blind eye." She explained He smiled softly.
"Look... if you love me too... If you love me at all, you would please just give me some sort of information, so I can help you get out of here." She explained. He sighed.
"I'm going to wait for my lawyer." He mumbled, before walking out of the room.
~~~
"Are you good to work today?" The chief asked. Hyejin looked up at him.
"Look I'm fine." She explained. He sat down next to her, clearing his throat.
"Look I know how hard it's been for you since you lost your old partner. You two were the best agents in our unit." He said. She looked up at him.
"not only was she your sister, but your best friend." He explained. She looked away, blinking away any tears.
"I never really thought about it but now I know why you are so eager to find this thief. And we will find him. But I need to make sure that you are ok today." He said. She sighed, looking up at him.
"I am... I'm fine." She claimed, walking to her desk.
"Uh chief, Agent Park. We found some video footage regarding the case. It's about Jaemin" He said. Hyejin looked up.
"What footage?"
~~~
"Look. Jaemin doesn't appear in the building 5 minutes after he was shot. And the person in these pictures shoulders isn't as broad as Jaemin's" The agent explained. Lyla scoffed.
"It could just be shoulder padding" She explained, earning a glare from Hyejin.
"I thought so too. But then I decided to look into it. If you zoom in here, the person's hair is dark brown... and Jaemin's hair is hidden under a cap but you can see on the side that his sideburns are bright pink." She said. Hyejin felt her chest tighten, slowly sitting down next to her.
"S-so it's not Jaemin?" She mumbled, swallowing the lump in her throat.
"No. It can't be. He's free to go"
Jaemin stood in front of the iron gates of the prison waiting for them to be open. As the gates slowly opened, Hyejin's small figure waited for him outside of the door.
"You came" He mumbled. She nodded, looking down at her feet.
"Why didn't you just tell me it wasn't you?" She asked. He sighed.
"Lyla was out to get me. I didn't think you would trust me over your own crime-fighting partner." He explained. She sighed.
"Look can we just forget everything I said about loving you? Clearly, you don't feel the same way and-"
"I never said I didn't feel the same. It's just that-"
"I get it, Jaemin. I get it. Just... The chief wanted to see you" She mumbled, turning her back to walk over to her car.
~~~
"Jaemin. Good to have you back." The chief said. Jaemin nodded.
"Uh thanks, sir. I'm surprised you still trust me." He teased. The chief walked over to him patting his back.
"Of course. Look we didn't know that you didn't do it. And I will continue to apologize for not fighting hard enough for you as much as Hyejin here does." He said, pointing at her. She looked away, avoiding eye contact with Jaemin.
"I appreciated it. S-so why did you guys call me in?" He asked. Hyejin sighed, looking up.
"Look you were getting closer than we are in this case. We need your help. Please" She begged, glaring into his eyes. He smiled.
"Of course."
~~~
"Ok, can we go over what we know?" The chief said, looking at the big whiteboard. Hyejin sighed, handing Jaemin a glass of water before sitting down.
"We know that the Landslow diamond is being delivered in 12 hours and we still have no idea where it's going... if w-we knew then maybe we could have some idea on who this person is." Hyejin explained, running a hand through her hair.
"Well, where have the last few locations been?" Jaemin asked.
"Four different types of Samil Cold storage units, three different Dae Jin refrigeration, and Two Kwungwon storage units." The chief said. Hyejin sat up.
"All these locations are like abandoned or old warehouses for cold storage units. Jaemin can you locate those locations?" She asked. Jaemin nodded, fiercely typing on his keyboard.
"All of these units are within a 3-mile radius of one another. And all of them have high security. Even encrypting the code for the security cameras will take me a while" He said. Hyejin nodded.
"I'm confused? Why is the number of storage units decreasing each time they were in contact with any of the Landslow possessions?"
"It's some sort of countdown." The chief said. Hyejin furrowed her eyebrows.
"The first one, 10 items of the Landslow's were stolen in 10 different locations. they are counting down from ten to one." He said. She furrowed her eyebrows.
"W-well what happens when they get to one?" She asked.
"I searched up the Landslow Diamond. It is worth a lot of money. W-what if they are making transactions? Like illegal transactions?" Jaemin asked.
"Like a mafia gang?" She asked. He nodded.
"10 items stolen... 10 transactions... This is the last transaction. W-why would they want such a small diamond as their last transaction?" The chief asked.
"Maybe it's not the final one... it's just the start of a bigger plan." Jaemin explained. Hyejin nodded.
"Jaemin I need you to look up missing persons dealt with rich people from around the world and relations to mafia gangs." She said. After a while of typing, Jaemins eyes widened.
"Guys this has happened before, the same kind of case. Except they didn't kill the rich people... it was police officers." He explained. Hyejins eyes widened.
"Hold on you said that the security on those storage units was hard to break, right?"
"yeah"
"The only other place I know that has high security is our police force," Hyejin said.
"What if they are not killing the Landslows... what if they are mimicking the previous case that Jaemin mentioned." He said.
"Ok, so why would they kill police officers?" Jaemin asked.
"Maybe they have something against them... or something against the specific officers that they murdered," Hyejin explained.
"Hold on guys. Each diamond has some sort of symbol. The pearl earrings were a symbol of security. The last time they have stolen the best security guard on the force was shot. The ruby necklace was stolen, and then I was accused of murder. A-and well... The matching bracelets were stolen and... the other Agent Park was killed. " Jaemin explained. She sighed, turning around to ignore the thoughts of her dead sister.
"So the Landslow diamond is the most properly secured, most valuable possession. Meaning whoever they are going for next has some sort of importance to the police force." Jaemin said. Hyejin looked up at the chief.
"Oh, my- I think i-it's you." She mumbled.
~~~
Hyejin removed her normal clothes, putting on all of her gear. She was strapping all kinds of guns to her belt and in her shoes. She looked over to the door to see the chief.
"Agent Park, as the chief if you take one step out of this building, I will have you suspended for ten months. " He commanded. She scoffed.
"Suspend me for as long as you want. I am not letting you die." She said. He shook his head.
"I can not sacrifice one of my best agents instead of me. Look I'm getting old and I need you to look after this place when I leave."
"You are not going anywhere, chief. It is important that you stay here."
"Hyejin-"
"I already lost my sister. I can't lose you too, Dad!" She yelled. He sighed, sitting down next to her.
"And I have already lost my first daughter... I can't lose my second one. Your mother would never forgive me. And I would never forgive myself, either." He explained. She looked up at him.
"I need to do this, Dad. They took so much away from us. Please if you go out there you will die... please let me go. Please let me do this. I won't feel complete if I don't do this." She begged. He pecked her forehead, bringing her into a hug before pulling away.
"Just do what you have to do and get out of there, Park." He said. She smiled.
"Love you too, Dad."
Once he left, Jaemin slowly walked into the room. He watched her struggle to put on her vest. He walked up behind her, slowly clipping the back of it, resting his hands on her waist.
"T-thank you" She whispered. He nodded, not moving his hands. She turned around, causing his hands to fall.
"Are you ready?" He asked. She sighed, turning to look at the door. She walked over to it, closing it.
"I'm so scared." She whispered, her breath shaking. He walked over to her.
"I don't know what they are capable of... I don't know who they are... I might die out there. I-i've barely lived, Jaemin. I- I graduated high school at 12 years old and college at 16... I haven't dated anyone, I haven't really had a boyfriend... I'm probably gonna die before I've ever lived." She whimpered. Jaemin brought his hand to her cheek. slowly caressing her temple with his thumb.
"Hyejin you are a badass. Ok, you have looked death in the eyes, every day and you never ever ran away. You always run to the danger. You are so brave. So incredibly brave. And you have a whole army here fighting for you. I promise we will be right behind you the whole time, ok?" He said. She nodded, slowly wrapping her arms around him, burying her face in his chest.
"But please be careful out there. I don't want to lose you" He whispered, pecking the top of her head. She felt her eyes water, looking up at him. He leaned in, connecting his lips to hers. His hand snaked around her waist while hers slowly moved up to her neck, softly pulling his peach-colored hair.
They slowly pulled away, opening her eyes to meet his.
"Promise me you will be careful... please," he begged. She pecked his lips again.
"I promise"
~~~
Hyejin walked up to the storage unit.
"Jaemin how the hell did you find this place?" She asked, through her earpiece.
"I put the storage units into groups of five, all of them connecting to make the shape of a star. So I took the remaining four points and found the last one which, obviously was another refrigeration storage unit." He explained. She furrowed her eyebrows.
"Yeah, I don't understand a single thing you just said." She mumbled, earning a small chuckle from him.
Hyejin had strapped a small camera to her earring so that they could see everything she sees.
"Hey have any of you seen Lyla? They are my partner and They didn't bother to show up." Hyejin asked.
"No... I will track them down just go in." The chief said. She sighed, walking up the stairs. She walked into the second floor, her eyes widening at all the artifacts in the room.
"What the hell?" She whispered, slowly walking around.
"All of these are from the Landslows... why would they bring all of the jewelry and gold and stuff in one room?" Jaemin asked. Hyejin furrowed her eyebrows, looking at the tag on the ground.
"W-wait a minute, is this my key card?" She mumbled, staring at it.
"How did it end up there?" Jaemin asked.

Warning: The protagonist begins the story quite cowed and meek but progresses into a more assertive and situationally dominant personality. This is partly due to growth, but also a result of the character overcoming initial shock and longstanding depression. If you think I could have handled a segment better, by all means, point it out and provide your reasoning and suggestion. Everyone's experience of depression is different, and Tim's is a close representation of my own, so it won't necessarily 'vibe' with everyone.
