Patton was just heading to the kitchen to get a cookie or two when he heard a little whimper come from the anxious Side's room. He paused, frowning as he looked at the door. He leaned his ear against the door to listen for any other noises. All he could hear was occasional sniffling coming from inside, sending waves of concern through him as he raised his hand to knock.
"Virge? Kiddo? You okay?" he called, hearing a sharp gasp and some shuffling. "Can I come in?"
"N-No! I don't wanna see anyone right now!" Virgil cried from behind the closed door.
The moral Side grew more concerned and entered the room despite his protests. Inside, it was dark and gloomy, just the way he remembered it the first time he'd gone inside; he made a point to ignore the container that held the anxious Side's pet spider.
Patton looked around, eyes landing on a huddled up clump of blankets in the corner. "Virgil?" he said, confusion lacing his voice. The clump sniffled and curled up more, clearly shaking because of something. He crossed the room and knelt down to his level, biting his lip with concern. "Kiddo, what's wrong?"
"N-Nothing! Go away!" the anxious Side snapped.
Frowning, he reached forward and pulled the blankets away. A small gasp escaped his lips as his eyes landed on Virgil. He was a small black and purple dragon. Patton's eyes were wide with shock as he looked at the creature. "Virgil?"
"I know, it's weird," he snapped. "I turn into this when I get overwhelmed, I can't control it. Leave me alone until I change back."
He sniffled and looked away from the moral Side. "Hey, it's okay Virge," he said, putting a hand on the dragon's cheek. He whined, moving into the touch. Patton pulled him into a hug, trying to get him to stop crying. "Breathe kiddo, you're okay-"

"What's going on in here?"
He looked up to see the logical Side and the creative Side in the doorway, looking at the two of them with concern and curiosity. He beckoned them over with a motion of his head that told them it was okay. "It's Virgil, he turns into this dragon when he gets overwhelmed, and he's upset about it," he explained as he pulled away from his embrace with the creature. "I was just about to tell him that the same thing happens to us."
"Huh?" the anxious Side murmured, looking up at him with the wide purple eyes that came with turning into a dragon. "What... what do you mean?"
"Well, Virgil, every side has a mechanism to transform them when they get overwhelmed," Logan said, straightening his glasses as he knelt down in front of him. "For example, when I experience an overwhelming amount of information, the Mind Palace turns me into an owl until I can process the information calmly and rationally."
Virgil looked in awe at this explanation, eyes wide. "Really?"
"Yeah, Hot Topic! When I'm overwhelmed with creative inspiration, I'm turned into a big lion!" Roman explained, gesturing with his hands excitedly. "I have this big gold mane, and I'm super strong! It's nice to go to the Imagination while I wait for it to wear off."
"And I turn into a puppy," Patton added, getting the anxious Side's attention again. "See? You're not weird!"
He looked down at his claws, smiling a little and sighing with relief. "Thanks guys."

The Dreamside Road
Five years after the world fell into chaos, a treasure of artifacts is up for grabs. The relics of the Dreamside Road offer a power that could help rebuild or annihilate what remains. Orson Gregory is an adventurer for hire, but hunts this treasure for answers, not glory. Enoa Cloud’s late aunt helped hide the Dreamside Road, but following in her aunt’s supernatural tradition offers her as much peril as power. Together, Orson and Enoa battle a magic-obsessed militia, clash with a host of rivals, and face constant adventure on their journey to find the Dreamside Road. *Updates Monday and Friday The Dreamside Road is now on TopWebFiction! Vote so people know this exists. _____________________________________ NOTE: The Progression tag applies specifically to Enoa. Also, fair warning, that element doesn't enter the story until she begins her studies. Content: Main characters range in age from teenagers to people in their thirties and older, but it will not contain gratuitous violence or explicit sexual content. It also won’t shy away from implication, anything to make this story and its world feel more real. Characters will freely allude to potentially triggering topics, including living with a disability, facing terminal illness, coping with trauma, surviving societal destabilization, and the consequences of bigotry. At its most intense, the Dreamside Road is a hard PG-13. Worldbuilding: This is not a story with a lot of early exposition scenes, conveniently explaining ‘magic systems’ and political dynamics. Readers will learn, progressively, as the characters do. This story/world has a ‘magic system’, or rather, a set of systems, but the effort to quantify and understand the truth of the setting plays a role in the backstory, as well as in some character motivations. In that same vein, not every character has a firm grasp on the nature of their world, and not every piece of dialog from every character should be taken as entirely truthful Worldbuilding. Also, this isn't the softest Sci-fi. There are at least some basic explanations given for various elements, but Royal Road does not give me a spectrum to choose from. Given the choice between hard and soft, let's just say The Dreamside Road won't be cited in any college Physics papers. Setting and Theme: The Dreamside Road walks the line between fantasy and science fiction and deals with finding one’s place in a changing world. Many of the characters in this story are United States natives and the story begins in the United States, my homeland. However, knowledge or interest in this country is not necessary to understand the story, especially as it progresses. Also, as this is a novel that deals with societal collapse and while that damage may be widespread, in story, I don’t want to overstep and critique the culture of others’ unless I have particular knowledge in a given area. Ultimately, the Dreamside Road is American in the same way Harry Potter is English, fantasies that do not have a full secondary world, but with enough original elements to fully diverge the setting from our the real world.
