patton sighed loudly as he changed positions in his bed for the fiftieth time. it has been almost a year since virgil told him about roman. as much as patton tried, he can't stop thinking about roman. virgil eventually stopped hanging around him because of it, and because he wanted to get over patton since it was clear the feelings would never be the same. he went on to hanging out with logan after he found out logan didn't know the full extent to what was happening either. now roman and patton were all alone.
finally, patton got up. he couldn't take it anymore. he slid his slippers on and walked over to his door. he took a deep breath and opened it, walking down the hallway to roman's room. first, he tried opening the door. when that didn't work, he gently knocked, wondering if roman was even up. his theory was confirmed when he heard roman getting off of his bed. "logan, what do you want- oh."
patton bit his lip and looked down, he realized he hasn't thought this through very well. "i-uh." patton stuttered. "i can't stop thinking about you." he muttered quietly, wrapping his arms around his own waist. he shivered slightly, still staring at the carpet.
"oh," roman bit his lip. "do- do you want to come in, it's cold out there." patton nodded and roman stepped aside, letting patton enter. patton walked over and sat at his desk chair and roman sat back down on his bed. "so-"
"sorry if i woke you."
"you didn't, don't worry." roman said softly. "can you- um" he hesitated, "can you please tell me how you truly feel about me? like, look me in the eyes and just, let your heart out."

patton nodded and took a short breath in. he looked up and stared into roman's eyes, searching for an answer. he didn't see the same fire, he doesn't feel the same anymore. it was sad. "i don't see the same." he stated, "i figured i couldn't stop thinking about you because maybe i still liked you- but i don't think that's it."
roman hummed, "what do you mean?"
"well- i used to love you. but now i don't" patton said, pulling his legs up to his chest, not feeling pity at roman's frown. "but- but i think i'd like to look at you and feel the way i did before." he took a breath in, "our fire died last winter, all of the shouting blew it out."
"i know, i'm so sorry-"
patton put his hand up, "you know i could live with or without you." he spat, but immediately softened up, "but i might like having you about."
roman smiled slightly, tucking a piece of hair behind his ear. "i like having you about." roman whispered. "i would love to rebuild everything."
patton laughed slightly. "hope i'm not tired of rebuilding, 'cause this might take a little more." he joked to himself, roman barley catching what he said. "yes, these new walls are pretty hard to crack, and it might take a while to trust you won't attack." patton explained and roman nodded.
"i don't blame you, but why didn't you come earlier?" he asked, "we could have done this a lot sooner."
"oh," he paused, "i'd apologize but it was only self defense. running away just made sense." he looked down in his lap and laughed to himself slightly. "but here i am, with arms unfolding." he said as he got up and sat on the bed with roman, letting roman crawl into his open arms. "i guess it isn't quite the end."

roman made a happy noise as he snuggled into patton's arms, pressing his face into his chest and taking in his sweet scent. "old partner in crime, i'm going to try to fall in love with you again." patton whispered, guiding them to lay down on roman's bed.
he had to admit, he did miss this. the cuddling was always nice and roman's scent would always put him fast asleep almost immediately. and as he closed his eyes, letting roman snuggle into his side, he realized that hasn't changed one bit.

Author's Thoughts: What is litRPG (From wikipedia) - LitRPG, short for Literary Role Playing Game, is a literary genre combining the conventions of MMORPGs with science-fiction fantasy novels.[1] LitRPG is a literary genre where games or game-like challenges form an essential part of the story. A LitRPG work simultaneously narrates the story of characters inside and outside of the game-world. At least some of the characters in a LitRPG novel therefore understand that they are playing a game: they are 'meta-aware'. So, while Tolkien's Lord of the Rings is a fantasy novel, a book about people creating avatars and interacting in a Lord of the Rings MMORPG would be a LitRPG novel. Why do I read them? You know, I am not too sure. I love MMOs. I played them, quit them, joined up and repeated the cycle. They are fun! They are a massive waste of time but so are most games. Do I want to read about someone else playing them? Sort of?The advent of VR and the possibility of VR someday becoming so immersive that you can't tell them from reality sets the imagination on fire. What if this could be life? But most stories fall short. At the end of the day the protagonist hangs up his VR helmet and goes to have dinner with his mom and dad or other family and it becomes meaningless. It's like the story that ends because the main character woke up and nothing you read matters. There have been some books that explore the concept of the intersection of reality and total immersion VR. Enders Game is a classic. There were a few others that escape me but they exist, however, the cross between the game and reality is weak.So what if the game was real? The technology needed for total immersion VR is so advanced that by the time we reach that goal technology should have naturally evolved to include several items. You must have direct neural input. You simply can't have a total immersion (all senses and perfect presence) experience without this basic prerequisite. If you have direct neural access, you can probably do neat things like feed knowledge and skills directly to that person. You can undoubtedly do many horrible things as well. Muscles are controlled by the brain. If you control the brain why would you let the body just sit there and rot? A person that sits unmoving for 24 hours a day will have their body whither away just like a coma patient. However, if you control the brain you could control the muscles. On a basic level, this would be isometric impulses, working muscle group against muscle group to avoid atrophy. Taken to its logical conclusion you would be able to gain muscle mass and program muscle memory. The flip side is that you could remote control their body... but let's not go there. So what would people do if it were real? Well, they would probably limit and regulate it since the drawbacks are very obvious. Even if you look at the basic aspects of this you can see some negative possibilities. Look at the Sword Art Online anime. Personally, I think they missed the boat by putting a bomb in the VR helmet. Do you really need a bomb when you have direct access to the brain? So what kind of events would you need to have a situation where the obvious drawbacks haven't been explored? Maybe a society where the advancement of technology has so far outstripped the explorations of its applications that ignorance was truly bliss? Okay, so I had to put in an alien invasion to kickstart the premise, but that was just one of the possibilities.

The Twelve
In a world marred by the supernatural, Japan suffers from its own fair share of evil and demonic disasters, with generations of shamans known as Onmyoji protecting their homeland from these forces of evil. Capable of wielding magic and using spirits of their own, these shamans were not only skilled in battle, but also divination. However, they were unable to correctly predict Japan's loss in World War Two, and suffered the punishments that followed. Persecuted and torn apart by infighting, the Onmyoji reunited under the banner of the Tsuchimikado clan, descendants of Abe no Seimei, one of the greatest Onmyoji to ever live. The Onmyoji began to rebuild and to regrow. Ren is the sole heir to the Tsuchimikado family, but has been unable to practice Onmyodo ever since his birth, even though he possesses the greatest ability in the family. But when disaster befalls his family, Ren has nobody to turn to, and no idea how to use his powers. As he journeys to escape the same fate his family faced and attempts to learn how to use his powers, there is only one question on his mind; as the Tsuchimikado heir, how can he save the Onmyoji... from themselves? ---------------------------------------------- note from author: I'm writing this based loosely on the very real theories of Onmyodo, and so my writing may not be a truthful or accurate depiction of Onmyodo or other related areas, such as religion, for instance. That is why, while depicted in the real world, events that happen may seem unrealistic and it may be easier to imagine it as a parallel universe that is the same as ours, but with slight differences so that my possible errors will be easier to overlook. Sorry, and thanks!

Loot Sisters
Loot Sisters is a light-hearted flash fiction serial of 100-word episodes inspired by RPGs and hunting for quests. I don't have a set plan for where the story goes, as each week, I write my story around three random words posted weekly on The Prediction (an online flash fiction challenge group). I hope you enjoy the story! :) My characters include Maya (the narrator and a bit of a rogue-like character), Vera (our healer/mage), Felicia (resident navigator and lover of gadgets), and Rach (a fighter/brawler). Cover illustration is of Maya by Luminita Pham.
