《Zero Falls: Season One》Irrational Treasure-Part One

The Cipher twins stood in confusion.
"Red, mind telling me what's going on?" Bill asked.
Wendy grinned in his direction. "Like what you see?"
"How can I, when I don't even know what I'm seeing?"
A few minutes ago, Wendy had dragged the brothers into town, where they came across a surprising sight. They seemed to have gone back in time, since Zero Gravity Town looked way more old timey. Everyone were dressed in odd uniforms, a few even dressed as Guardians. Barrels, stands, and carriages filled the streets.
"It's Pioneer Day!" She announced, joyfully. "A day celebrating when this town was first founded."
"So, what's with the cosplayers?" Bill asked, pointing to a little girl dressed as Wendy.
"This is also an important day for Guardians, which is a plus for me, since I don't have to wear my disguise, everyone will think I'm wearing a costume."
"Welcome to 1863!" Toby Determined exclaimed, before passing them.
Bill grimaced. "I dunno, something about these yahoos dressing up like lunatics seems weird."
"Bill, this is our home," Will told him. "The least we can do is embrace the weirdness."
"And that's exactly what I'm planning to do," Wendy said, before turning away. "If you need me, I'll be squeezing a maple tree to produce fresh syrup."
"And you're just going to leave us in the midst of this ridiculousness?" Bill snapped.
"And you're going to enjoy it!" She called back, before disappearing amongst the crowd.
Bill was about to complain, but then Will tugged on his arm. Eventually, the blond decided to pause his whining for now, and follow his brother through town. After a while, they came across a huge stage, where people was starting to huddle. Curious, the twins pushed forward, until they were almost in the front of the crowd.
Will looked at the stage incredulously. "I wonder what's happening here?"
Before Bill could reply, someone bumped into his side. He was about to scold the one responsible, when he paused. Standing behind him, was Dipper. Not one of those cosplayers, but the real thing. The brunette looked down at him, and a ghost of a smile tugged on his mouth.

"Hey, Bill," He greeted, placing a hand on the boy's head.
Bill flushed, and prepared to snap at him, when another form barreled into him. He was lifted off his feet, when Mabel gripped him into a large embrace.
"I was hoping to see you two here!" She exclaimed.
"Shooting Star, put me down!" Bill scolded, struggling in her grip.
She obliged, and placed him back on the ground. Bill grumbled under his breath, Dipper chuckled at him.
"Are you here to celebrate too?" Will asked the Guardians.
Mabel nodded eagerly. "Of course, the candle dipping, the outfits, the legally marrying woodpeckers."
"What was that last part?" Bill questioned.
She didn't answer, instead, she smiled towards the stage. "Ooh! It's starting!"
Before either of the brothers could ask what was happening, Mayor Soos suddenly appeared on the stage wearing a pioneer hat. He cleared his throat, and gave the crowd a friendly look.
"Here-yee here-yee! Ye olde commencement ceremony has commenced!" He announced, gleefully. "Introducing: the Goddess of Beauty and Riches!"
"Pacifica?" Mabel breathed.
The person in question stepped on stage, and she wasn't alone. The Cipher twins were surprised to see a llama walking beside her. The animal seemed well tamed, because when Pacifica paused, it settled behind her with it's head slightly raised.
"Hello, everyone," She smiled, revealing white teeth. "As you all know, this very town was founded by the Guardians, me being one of them of course."
The audience applauded, and she rose a hand to silence them.
"Now, if you have pioneer spirit, come up here and introduce yourself," Pacifica said.
Mabel gasped. "Audience participation? I'm in!"
Will frowned. "Mabel, don't you and that girl have a shaky relationship?"
She waved his concern off. "No way, any bad blood between us is water under the bridge now."
With a confident bounce in her step, she climbed up the stage. She arrived beside Pacifica, only to be faced with sideways look from the blonde.
"And what do you think you're doing?"
"Joining in the fun," Mabel grinned, oblivious to the sneer on the other's face. Then, she turned to the crowd. "Let's get this Pioneer Day started! USA! USA!"

The audience chanted with her.
"Excuse me," Pacifica chimed in, sharply. "But, Pioneer Day is for earthbound Guardians, AKA: the ones that actually care about this town."
Mabel's eyes widened. "What? Of course, I care about this place. Just because I wasn't raised here like you, doesn't make me care any less."
Pacifica rolled her eyes. "Please, you space-freaks think you're so much special than the rest of us," She spat. "You're wrong, and don't think you're above people like me because you're prett-- powerful."
"That's enough, Pacifica," Dipper snapped, defiantly.
Will nodded in agreement, and managed to climb onto the stage. "Yeah, what's your deal with Mabel?"
"I don't need judgement from you," Pacifica retorted. "Also, since you're not doing anything productive, you might as while babysit Lavender for me."
He blinked. "Wha--"
He was cut off, when the llama stepped beside him.
"She likes long walks, fresh sushi, and you have to comb her coat every 10 minutes," Pacifica instructed. "Be gentle with her, she's a delicate lady."
Lavender started chewing Will's hair. "Ah! Help!"
She ignored him, and turned back to Mabel nonchalantly. "If you're done here, I have a ceremony to run."
Mabel frowned, and climbed off the stage, followed by Will and the llama.
"Now who wants to hear more about me?" Pacifica giggled, and the crowd cheered.
Dipper regarded his sister in concern, when she paused before them. "You okay?"
"I need some old timey butterscotch," She sighed.
"Let's get out of here," Bill said, then turned. "Will, are you coming?"
The younger twin was trying to move Lavender forward. "In a minute...C'mon, Lavender!"
Lavender yawned in return.
❇❇❇
The group settled on a bench. Mabel was unwrapping some candy, before plopping it in her mouth, and chewing with a miserable expression on her face.
"Mabel, don't listen to a word Pacifica said," Dipper told her, seriously.
The female brunette shook her head. "But, what if she's right? Do I really care about Zero Gravity Town, or is it just my imagination?"
"No it isn't... I think," Bill said, awkwardly. "Will, can you help me out here?"
Meanwhile, Will was struggling as Lavender chewed the back of his sweater. "How about you help me!?"
The blond groaned. "Dang it, Will, you're no help!"
Dipper patted his sister on the back in reassurance. "Pacifica is just jealous of you, that's all. She thinks earthbound Guardians are superior to ones in the realm, because they discovered this place."
"Actually," Bill started, taking out the journal from his backpack. "I read somewhere, that's not the case."
The Pine twins watched with baited interest and confusion, while Will finally freed his sweater from the animal's teeth. Bill flipped the pages in the book, before coming to a complete stop.
He pointed to the page. "Here: In my investigations, I recently made a discovery. The Guardians may not be the true founders of Zero Gravity Town! I believe this secret is buried somewhere on the enclosed document. If only I can crack the code..." He opened the letter glued to the page, revealing complex series of letters, symbols, and words. "Oh man, if this cover-up is true, it'll surely bring Pacifica down a peg. My thirst to inflict needless backlash will be quenched once more!"
"Wait, if I come along on this investigation, I'll prove I care about this town by finding out the true founder!" Mabel exclaimed, happily. "Come on, Bill, let's go."
She grabbed the blond's arm, and dragged him off. Dipper only looked at her incredulously.
"Mabel, our powers won't work if we're separated--"
"Sorry Dipper, bye!"
The male brunette huffed in annoyance.
"Since it's just you and I, you wanna help me comb a llama?" Will asked.
Dipper shrugged. "I suppose. Speaking of which, where's Lavender?"
Will stared. "What do you mean, she's right..."
He paused, when he saw no signs of the animal.
"Oh dear."

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.

Little did he know that Voldemort wasn’t the biggest threat he would have to face. Receiving power from unexpected sources and armed with Information he didn’t expect to have, Harry sets out on a mission to bring the dark lord and his followers down and uncover one of the world’s least known secrets. ============ This novel has been posted on Webnovel, Scribblehub, Fanfiction & RoyalRoad. This story was supposed to be a rewrite of my earlier book, Harry Potter and the Dark Phoenix but the plot ended up so different that I figured I’d just make a new book out of it. I might, at some point in the future, rewrite the earlier book with the earlier plot but that will have to wait for this one to finish. This is an AU so please keep that in mind. Constructive criticism is welcome, needless bashing is not.
