everyone rushed to grab a chart. madelyn followed mer out of the room.
"mer! mer!" she called.
"what mads?"
"you're katie's doctor, right? you've been there since the beginning. let's work to figure this out together, maybe shepherd will let us both scrub in if we do it together." madelyn bargained.
"fine, if we figure it out, you can have it. i don't wanna scrub in with him." meredith said.
"deal." the pair walked down into the emergency room, meredith filling out some charts.
christina soon approached the pair.
"hey, i want in on shepherds surgery. you've been the intern on katie since the start. you wanna work together? if we find the answer, we have a fifty-fifty chance of scrubbing in."
"sorry, she's taken." madelyn snapped. meredith rolled her eyes.
"i'll work with both of you, but i don't want in on the surgery. you guys can have it."
"are you kidding, it's the biggest opportunity an intern will ever get." christina questioned.
"i don't want to spend anymore time with shepherd then i have to." meredith shot back. madelyn laughed, knowingly.
"what do you have against shepherd?" christina pushed.
"if we find the answers, the surgery is yours. do you want to work together or not?"
"deal."
💙💙💙
"so she doesn't have anoxia, chronic renal failure, or acidosis." madelyn listed.
"it's not a tumor, because her c.t. 's clean." christina continued. "you're seriously not going to tell me why you won't work with shepherd?" she begged.
"no. what about infection?"
"no, there's no white count, and she has no c.t. lesions, no fevers, nothing in the spinal tap." madelyn answered.
"just tell me." christina begged again.
"you can't comment, make a face, or react in any way." meredith started, followed by a few seconds of silence.

"we had sex." she finally said.
christina stares at meredith for a few seconds.
"what about an aneurysm?" christina broke the silence.
"no blood on the c.t. and no head aches." meredith answered.
"okay there's no drug use, no pregnancy, no trauma." madelyn crossed off in her head.
"was he good?" christina asked again. "i mean he looks like he'd be good."
"sounded like that too." madelyn joked, more to herself then anyone else, remember how she was kept up all night because of the noise in the room beside hers.
christina chuckled at her comment, while meredith stood up to put the book that was in her hand back on the shelf.
"we're out of answers." meredith said, ignoring christina's question.
"what if no one comes up with anything?" she continued.
"you mean if she dies." madelyn asked.
"yeah."
"this is going to sound really bad, but i really wanted that surgery." madelyn said.
"she's just never gonna get the chance to turn into a person. the sum total of her existence will be almost winning miss teen whatever. you know what her pageant talent is?"
"they have talent?" said christina.
"rhythmic gymnastics." meredith answered.
"oh, come on." christina laughed, madelyn joined in.
"what is rhythmic gymnastics? i can't even say it i don't know what it is." meredith jokes, everyone started to laugh.
"i think it's something with a ball and a, what?" christina stopped talking when she saw the look on meredith's face.
"meredith, what?" madelyn pushed.
"get up. come on."
💙💙💙
"the only thing she would possibly need is an angiogram."madelyn said in between breathes. the three of them were running towards shepherd.
"derek, derek!" madelyn called as she say him walk into the elevator.

"just one moment. katie competes in beauty pageants."
"i know that, but we have to save her life, anyway." derek joked.
"she has no headaches, no neck pains, her c.t. is clean. there's no medical proof of an aneurysm,"
"right." derek said skeptically, not really know where madelyn was going with this.
"but what if she has an aneurysm anyway?"
"there's no indicators." he simple said.
"but she twisted her ankle practicing for the pageant."
"i appreciate you trying to help, but,"
"she fell, when she twisted her ankle, she fell." meredith chimed in.
"it was no big deal, not even a bump on the head. she got up, iced her ankle, and everything was fine. it was a fall so minor, her doctor didn't even think to mention it when i was taking her history, but she did, she did fall." madelyn finished, out of breath.
"you know what the chance is that a minor fall could burst an aneurysm? one in a million, literally." derek finished before the door closed.
the three of them stood in silence, about to walked away when the door opened again.
"let's go." derek ordered.
"where?" christina asked.
"to find out of katie's one in a million."
💙💙💙
"i'll be damned." derek whispered.
"there it is." the doctor doing the test said as it appeared on the screen. everyone leaned in for a closer look.
"it's small, but it's there. it's a subarachnoid hemorrhage. she's bleeding into her brain."

By the time he can walk and talk, humanity has already fought back the worst of its demons and settled into its new status quo.
