《In Five Years》Chapter 5

I didn't know Maya had a job. I mean, I know she had moved out into an apartment by herself, so I assumed she'd have to work somewhere, but I never expected her to work here.

I glance around at the nightclub, the music blasting so loudly into my ears that I can hardly hear. I'm not even sure where to look for Maya in the heaps of people, so I finally tap the security guard on his shoulder and ask for her.

He points to the bar, and I'm in awe when I see her behind it pouring drinks. She's a bartender?

She's in a skimpy outfit like all of the other girls here, and when I take a seat at the bar she waves excitedly at me, slapping a drink down in front of a man who slides her a twenty.

"Hey!" She says as she hurries over towards me. I'm still in awe as I analyze the black and white checkered short shorts, but honestly, this job has Maya written all over it. She's fun, bubbly, and loves to talk to people.

"Wow." I nod as I look around at all the neon lights. "Pretty impressive, Maya. This is cool. I'm glad you told me to look hot. Otherwise I'd stick out like a sore thumb."

She's lucky I had brought clothes in case something like this happened. My wardrobe has updated since I've been at college, and of course I prepared myself in case I went to any parties there, so I chose a leather mini skirt and a red lace bodysuit that outlines my breasts. My hair is gelled back into a ponytail, and I did my makeup heavier than normal.

"You look hot as hell!" She screams over the music and then holds a finger up towards me. "Give me one second."

There's an apron tied around her waist that she takes off, and she goes over to the other bartender to tell him something before she slips out from behind the bar. "Let's go outside for my break. It's hot as hell in here."

She shows us to a back entrance and props it open, the cool air feeling so good against my skin. I was only in there for less than five minutes and I was already starting to sweat. I don't know how she does it.

"How was tutoring Katie?" She arches a brow up, and then she lets out a laugh. "She texted me and told me you were coming over."

"Ah." I nod and watch her pull out a cigarette and a lighter. "You smoke now?"

"Have for about a year." She shrugs and lights it, taking a long drag. "Your brother does too. He's the one that got me onto these stupid shits."

I haven't noticed, but a lot has changed about Maya. Her black hair is dyed purple at the ends, and she's got a new nose ring now, a small gold hoop. She looks bad ass.

"Interesting fact." I say, and when she holds a cigarette out to me I shake my head. "I'm good."

"So... how did tutoring go?" She asks again, and I roll my eyes at how well she still knows me. "Don't try to change the subject."

"It was awkward." I admit. "She's nice though. I'll give her that."

"Yeah." She says. "She's cool. I've met her a few times and we've grown pretty close."

"When?" I ask, and I find myself becoming jealous again.

"Well, Cameron and Ethan are best friends. We've flown out to Pennsylvania twice now to visit."

"They've been together that long?"

She shrugs and takes another drag of her cigarette. "They've only been official for a few months now, but she was around when we visited before."

Letting out another sigh, I rest my back up against the brick of the building and scuff my shoes against the pavement.

In some ways I blame myself for this. Cam reached out multiple times when he first went off to college and I just got so wrapped up in my studies that I didn't hang out with anyone. Maya and I grew apart, and then I got my internship when I started Yale, and I cut off ties with everyone it seemed like.

So I'm glad Cameron found her. I'm glad Maya got close with her. I'm glad they found their happiness when I stepped away.

"She's nice." I finally say. "I like her. We already hashed out Cam and I's past, so..."

"Is it really hashed out though?" She asks. "Have you and Cam talked?"

"No." I shake my head and stare down at my heels. "We don't need to. We said all that was needed to say before he left for college. Bringing it up again would just... complicate things. I don't want that for him. I want him to be happy, and he's happy with Katie."

"Okay, good!" She grins. "Glad this conversation went that way because I invited them to come out tonight with us."

"Excuse me?" I hiss as she grips onto my wrist and pulls me back inside.

"What?" She replies innocently. "My shift is over in twenty minutes. We're going to all be around each other whether you like it or not for this break, so you might as well get used to it!"

She goes back behind the bar and I plop myself onto the barstool, resting my forehead in the palms of my hands. If I had known they were coming I would have covered up more. I wouldn't be so... exposed.

Glancing down to the bodysuit that's outlining my breasts, I let out a groan until I see a shot land in front of me.

"Rough night?" The other bartender, Maya's coworker, is staring at me with a look of sympathy. The kind of look you really don't want to get in a fun, energetic nightclub.

"I'm fine." I tell him, throwing the shot back almost immediately as I glance around for Cameron. He's nowhere to be found though. "Thanks for this."

"Are you friends with Maya?" He asks, and before I know it I find myself going into detail about how we used to be best friends in high school before I got into Yale and ruined basically all of my friendships that I had. I tell him I'm at the top of my class, but it doesn't even feel like it matters because I find myself to be so lonely.

I open up to him about Cameron, and about how I fucked things up with him too. How he's going to be here any minute now.

I don't know why I'm opening up to some random stranger in a night club, but it seems easy to talk to him. He's not judgmental, he never interrupts, he's just staring at me intently.

Finally he pours me another two shots and watches as I throw them back like a champ, and suddenly I realize how attractive he really is. He's got these chocolate brown eyes that are catching hints of hazel from the light, and dark skin that seems so smooth it's almost tempting to run my hands over it.

"What about you?" I find myself saying.

"What about me?" He replies.

"Are you in school? Are you as lonely and depressed as I am?"

This causes him to laugh, and I catch two dimples coming out against his cheeks.

Good lord he's attractive.

"Tre!" A drunk girl practically throws herself against the bar, pushing her tits up for him against the edge. "I'm here for my usual."

"I'm on my fifteen." He shrugs, but sends her a playful grin. "You'll have to let Maya pour your drink unless you want to wait."

"Oh, I'll wait." She giggles and tugs on her bottom lip, slowly backing her way to the booth she was sitting in.

"You seem to be a hot commodity." I joke, glancing back at the girl who still hasn't moved her eyes off of him.

"So do you." He nods to the left of me, but grabs onto my hand so that I won't turn around and leans over the bar to get close to my ear. "The man I'm assuming to be Cameron has been giving me a death stare since we've started talking. Now I wouldn't look behind you or it'll be obvious, but if I..." he wraps his pointer finger and thumb around my chin to tug me slightly closer towards his face, and I find myself unable to breathe.

"If I do this..." he repeats, and I see him flicker his eyes challengingly to Cameron's. "He'll get very jealous, yeah?"

"I don't want to make him jealous." I can hardly speak from the hold his eyes have on me, and for whatever reason I find myself not wanting to move away from him.

"Do you want me to pull away?" He asks, and my breath is catching in my throat. I find myself about to say no, but before I can he releases my chin from his fingertips and pours me another shot. "You're going to need it." He says, and I suddenly feel a body push beside me.

It's Cameron, and he sits at the barstool, fury hidden behind his eyes. He doesn't even try to hide the jealousy. "Rum and coke." He snaps at Tre, and when I finally get a good look at him I realize he's so angry that he's shaking.

I take the shot that Tre put down in front of me and shake my head from the rush. I'm four shots deep now, and the room is feeling hazy.

"Hopefully I'll see you around." Tre tells me, and the smile on his face is genuine. I didn't need him to make Cameron jealous, I didn't even want that, but a part of me wonders if he was just trying to hit on me and not make Cameron jealous at all. Maybe that last part just happened.

Cam glares in his direction and takes a long sip of his drink. "You need to watch out for guys like that." He says, and it causes me to roll my eyes.

"Please, spare me the advice, Cam. Where's Katie? Shouldn't she be at your side?"

The liquor is making me spill my feelings out, and I have to keep reminding myself to keep them inside. I can't say anything that I'll regret.

"She's dancing with Maya." And then he points to the dance floor in the other room, and I see them spinning each other around in drunk circles. I find myself feeling jealous again, and that only makes me grow angrier. "And I can give you advice if I want to. I'm just trying to look out for you."

"I don't need your advice." I shoot back, and I watch as his eyes narrow before they drag down my body. He stares at my tits for a good five seconds and shifts uncomfortably in his seat. Why is it that talking back to him has always turned him on?

I somehow find the urge to stand up so that I can leave. He's been drinking a lot, I can tell that he has. His eyes are hazy like mine, and he's slumped over slightly in his bar stool. His lips are wet from the liquor, and my god if I stay here any longer I'm going to attack him. Liquor makes me horny, and I can tell it does the same to him.

He grabs onto my arm to stop me when I try to move past him and leans up to my ear. "I'm just telling you that you need to be careful." He mutters lowly. "Because it wouldn't be hard for someone to take you right in that bathroom and make you come so hard that you'd forget how to breathe. That skirt gives them easy access, does it not?"

Oh, Cam.

My whole body is on fire from his words. He's cheating on Katie right now, and it's so wrong. I should tell him to stop, but he can tell that he's getting to me.

"They could easily pin you up against the stall..." he trails off, removing one of his hands to trail up my thigh. "And then shove this skirt up to your waist and fuck you completely senseless. Is that what you want, Mads?"

He's remembering that night at the Grand Canyon. The night in the restaurant. The night when he fucked me so good in that bathroom stall that I didn't have the words. He was pulling on my hair, smacking my ass... fuck.

But he's drunk, and Katie deserves better than this. I'm not going to let him cheat on her when she seems to want the best for him. He wants her, not me, and that's a consequence he's going to have to deal with.

"I do." I nod, and he bites hard onto his bottom lip until he watches me wave Tre over. I've never done this before, but Cam got me riled up and I'm tired of pleasing myself. I want someone to please me again.

"Tre." I grin and lean forward so that my tits are fully on display to him. "What do you think of one night stands?"
