"Goodnight, baby."
------------------------------
It takes forever,
but when your heartbeat barely manages to calm down,
and you stop hearing his low voice echoing in your mind,
exhaustion claims you,
and you fall asleep.
-------------
The warm, pleasant tingling
follows you into the dream, too.
It's the same.
Everything is a soft gold.
You're standing in a field,
short grass swaying in the breeze.
Jungkook stands across from you, his hand outstretched.
Your arm is reaching toward him;
your fingertips almost graze his.
Even if you wanted to, you couldn't move forward.
Your legs feel heavy like stone.
But did you want to, anyway?
For some reason,
even though you couldn't remember right now...
you felt sure that Jungkook would be in a lot of pain to come
if you did touch him.
Why would you want him to be in pain?
You look at him.
His angled dark brows frame his wide eyes,
eyes you felt you could drown in.
The now familiar drop of his cheekbones
over his arched lips,
his sharp jawline...
How could you ever want to hurt him?
The wind ruffles his bangs,
and you're lost for a moment,
captivated by his expression.
There was something desperate all over his face,
he was whispering something,
but you couldn't hear him.
You try to step forward again,
really tried this time,
to see if you could hear his voice,
but your legs are rooted into the ground.
The scene begins to fade
around the edges
and Jungkook's face twists in panic,
his outstretched hand inching forward to you.
And that reminds you of something,
something you can't place right now.
Suddenly,
even though you don't know why,
this feels important.
The field begins to vanish,
as you struggle to hear Jungkook,
and you finally realize that there is no sound.
You wouldn't hear him no matter what.
The darkness fills your eyes,
the dark swallows the gold,
in the last moment
you finally read his lips
and what he's saying...
Please.

Jungkook
------------------
The loud knocking on his door jolts him awake.

"Jungkook! Wake up!"
Jungkook recognizes the voice of this particular manager hyung.
"Okay, I'm- I'm awake," he calls back, his voice a hoarse from sleep.
"We leave in ten minutes!" the hyung yells.
Jungkook lifts his arms to stretch,
only to realize that his forearm had been resting against Soulmate's arm.
She's smiling softly at him,
her phone in her hand as though she's been awake for a while.
"Good morning, sleepyhead," she laughs.
"Good morning," Jungkook grins back.
He likes the way she straightens her shirt as though she is nervous.
He likes the way she hops off the bed before he can say anything else.
He only wishes he could remember
something important that he had been thinking
about her
before he had woken up.
--------------
"Hyung, hyung!"
Jungkook calls out, jogging to catch up to Namjoon.
"Hey," Joon turns his head, stepping sideways to make some room for the maknae.
Jungkook falls in beside him, offering him a water bottle.
Namjoon takes it.
Jungkook wipes the sweat off his temple
as the pair walks slowly down the hall,
away from the dance studio.
Something is off, and Jungkook knows it.
He's tired from their dance practice,
but he's not tired enough for this to make sense.
"Hyung, I'm... I just, my head feels a little foggy."
Namjoon's eyes snap up in alarm.
"Are you okay?"
"Yeah, it's fine. But... hyung,
was I supposed to see the soulmate expert yesterday?"
Jungkook shakes his head.
Namjoon stops in his tracks.
"Supposed to? You ."
Jungkook's eyes widen.
"I... I went?"
"Jungkook... are you not awake yet?
Remember?
He saw you two, and said that you have a Forgettab-"
Namjoon's words slip into oblivion.
His face freezes.
"I have a what?" Jungkook asks.
"No!"
Taehyung's voice shouts into Jungkook's ear from behind.
Taehyung's arm snakes around Jungkook's neck and pulls his head back,
definitely giving Jungkook a crick in the neck,
their eyes meeting.
'You don't remember?" Taehyung's brows are furrowed.
"Remember what?" Jungkook snaps,
annoyed now,
ripping himself out of Taehyung's headlock,
pressing down on his neck which feels really weird.
What scares him is that Namjoon is still staring at him with shock,
and even Yoongi, who has caught up to them,
looks speechless.
"What? Will tell me what's going on?" Jungkook says,
scanning his various hyungs,
who were all silently looking at him as if he were exhibit A.

"What are you guys doing?" Hoseok pokes his head out of a door down the hall.
"Hurry up, the stylists are waiting!"
Mira walks out behind him,
and beckons at Jungkook, smiling.
Something feels odd in Jungkook's chest.
He thinks he should be feeling something defensive about Mira,
but he can't remember it right now.
And why in the world would he feel that about Mira noona?
She's been his stylist for three years.
She was good to him.
Jungkook shakes it off.
"Jungkookie," Taehyung is saying,
a sad frown on his face,
but Yoongi steps between them and cuts Taehyung off.
"Not right now. Not in front of... the stylists.
And Jungkook can't deal with this right now.
We'll talk about it later."
The rapper shakes his head at all of them,
with a pointed tilt of his head toward Mira,
before heading into the styling rooms.
What is this about Mira noona?
What is it about her that Jungkook can't remember?
He tosses his head, frustrated at himself.
Namjoon nods.
"Yoongi hyung is right."
And so they all start to walk away,
leaving Jungkook a dazed mess,
rooted to the spot,
his head foggier than ever.
----------------
"What's wrong with you today, Kookie?"
Mira noona grins.
Her face is friendly as usual
as she guides Jungkook's face with gentle fingers on his cheek.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't hear..."
Jungkook apologizes, turning his face.
"You must be tired," she says.
She sweeps a makeup brush under his eyebrow.
"Yeah, maybe that's it," Jungkook replies with a polite smile.
But the thing is,
Jungkook doesn't think that's it.
He doesn't think so at all.
-----------------
Jungkook closes the door behind him.
Exhaustion presses heavily on his shoulders,
and he still has to wait until Namjoon comes home,
so he can ask Namjoon what the heck he forgot about the soulmate expert.
But he finds himself brightening
at the thought of who might be waiting for him,
at the thought of seeing her.
Eager to check the apartment,
he drops his duffle bag to the floor as he passes the foyer.
And for once, the universe doesn't tease him.
The familiar form of his soulmate
is sitting on the floor in the living room,
leaning against the side of the remaining sofa.
She is surrounded by a few large pillows.
Her hair is up,
her lips parted in concentration,
her eyes focused on her work.
Jungkook stands in place, winded by the domestic scene.
He's not sure if he wants to brush the escaped strand of hair away from her eyes,
or if he wants to drop down onto the pillows beside her
to mold himself into the scene with her
and stay there forever.
Taehyung sits on the sofa behind her, reading from her laptop as she works.
"That is so cool. I love the way you phrase that," he points at her screen.
She tilts her head back to smile at Taehyung.
"Thank you. I had to rewrite it a few times to get the wording right."
The curve of her smile is so sweet
and Jungkook doesn't know if it is the bond
or just himself,
but he doesn't want it to be about Taehyung.
Not because of jealousy,
but just because Jungkook wants...
he wants something...
And before he has figured out what it is,
he has already stepped forward,
into their space,
purposely bold,
purposely forceful,
his presence maximized on purpose,
to claim her attention.
----------
The way her face lights up when she registers him
and the way she turns away from Taehyung immediately,
makes the gorilla in Jungkook thud on his chest repeatedly.
There's a swag in his walk,
because she's looking at him,
running her eyes over his still waxed hair
and the rings on his hands he hasn't removed,
on purpose,
the tailored shirt on his body he didn't change out of,
on purpose.
Jungkook tilts his shoulder as he walks,
like he does on a stage,
lifts his jaw to look at her,
trying to hook her eyes to him like he's been trained.
With an easy grin he's practiced for years for the camera,
he winks,
pulling out his charms like there was a hundred thousand people watching him.
He should feel underhanded for using his tricks on her
but he doesn't,
he really doesn't,
In fact, he's pretty glad to have this at his disposal.
Especially when a blush creeps over her cheeks.
Jungkook closes in on her,
specifically so she will definitely notice
the cologne he touched up on in the car
just for her.
Letting his smile fade, letting his expression
turn into something more serious.
And he drops down beside her,
folding his long legs so that his thigh presses against hers.
He knows she's forgotten all about Taehyung.
Her gaze is pinned to Jungkook
as he leans into her,
their faces just inches apart
as he murmurs,
"Hey, baby."
