Jungkook had never been a slacker.

But with the ticking stopwatch hanging over his shoulder,

and his soulmate's golden light beside him,

her hand in his,

he found himself downright unwilling

as the black car approached the BigHit building parkade.

"We're already waiting for you at the studio.

Slow Rabbit hyung and I.

Come quick, Jungkook,"

RM's voice says over the car speaker.

"Got it," the manager responds for Jungkook.

He hangs up the call and turns to the backseat.

"I know it's going to be difficult for you to focus, but we do have to finish your vocal recording today, Jungkook."

Soulmate squeezes his hand gently,

and Jungkook lifts his head to see her smile.

How could she smile?

When they were running out of time...

"It'll be okay," she says.

"I'll wait for you at the dorms. Get some of my own work done.

And I'll see you tonight?"

There's something stiff in her expression,

and the way she won't meet his eyes.

But his manager has already pulled the backseat door open,

is staring at Jungkook expectantly,

and driver hyung is looking through the rearview mirror,

clearly wondering why Jungkook wouldn't get out

so that he could take Soulmate where she needed to go.

Jungkook tried do the right thing.

Really, he did.

He forced his hand open,

even if the motion was a bit jerky,

and let go of her.

But then Taehyung's voice rang through the air.

"Jungkookie! How did your appointment go?"

Strutting past their car,

Taehyung slows to a stop as he registers the maknae inside.

He pokes his head past the manager and waves at both of them in the backseat.

Jungkook pounces on the chance

as the two elementary school friends give each other friendly grins

on either side of him.

"Come with me," Jungkook tugs on her hand.

"You can talk to Taehyung while I do my recording."

"Yes! Let's eat something together and chat," Taehyung chimes in cooperatively.

Girl-who-makes-golden-sparks-in-Jungkook's-chest seems to hesitate,

clearly a little tempted by the opportunity to chat with her childhood bestie Taehyung

about the soulmate expert they had just seen.

And Jungkook tries not to be offended by this.

They are childhood friends, he reminds himself.

Just childhood friends.

And besides,

he gets what he wants anyway

when she nods.

The two of them hop out of the car to join Taehyung,

who really didn't mind being used by Jungkook.

"What?"

The small potato chip falls right back out of Taehyung's mouth

as he turns to stare at you.

You shrug, trying to keep yourself together.

The coffee room of the Bighit recording studios floor was not the place you wanted to fall apart.

Footsteps pad by in the hallway outside.

You don't look at Taehyung as you take a sip of banana milk.

He stares at you incredulously.

"But... but you're soulmates.

That's supposed to be like...

forever."

You nod.

"But the guy can like... see soulmate energy and bonding stuff.

He can see that we have a Forgettable bond.

Which literally just means that we can forget about the bond."

Taehyung picks up the moist chip from his lap

and puts it in his mouth for the second time.

It's limp,

and it doesn't crunch.

You try not to shudder.

"I don't like this," he tuts disapprovingly.

"Who is this dude anyway, trying to split up you and Jungkookie?"

"This dude is the best soulmate expert in the country, that's who,"

chides Jin,

appearing from the doorway.

Taehyung shakes his head,

not sold on this whole scene.

"Don't let Jungkook forget. You should stay together," he says adamantly.

"That's not for you to decide.

should decide, don't tell them what to do," Jin says,

reaching over to take a chip from Taehyung's hand.

"He just licked it," you inform Jin calmly.

Jin blinks and returns the chip into Taehyung's hand,

leaving the room without another word.

"You're gross," you tell Taehyung.

Taehyung grins ear to ear,

his eyes just squinty crescents.

Jungkook did prepare himself mentally beforehand,

but he is still a little bit proud

when he finds his soulmate in the break room with Taehyung,

both curled together on the same sofa,

asleep,

and Jungkook doesn't even see red sparks in his vision.

He already knew

more or less

that after two hours of his recording,

the two schoolmates would be in one friendly shape or another when he returned.

The coffee table in front of the napping pair

is littered with packets of open snacks, scattered messily,

and bars of chocolate.

Jungkook reaches into the mess and helps himself to a potato chip,

but he doesn't like this flavor,

because the chip is a little limp.

He shudders.

He had been eager for the break,

happy when producer-nim called a ten minute break

to rest Jungkook's voice

and give everyone a short rest.

He hasn't expected to find his soulmate asleep.

But now that he looked closely,

she did look exhausted.

He had wanted to talk with her,

even if only for a short while,

but now he is glad she is sleeping.

She looked like she needed it.

So Jungkook trudged over to the lounge area,

all the way on the other side of that floor,

to grab two blankets,

and returned,

to gently spread a blanket over his soulmate's shoulders,

all the way down to her toes.

And not-so-gently

throw the other

only partially opened up

blanket

over Taehyung's stomach.

Jungkook immediately regretted it though

because the movement wakes Taehyung,

who huffs and shifts,

and in turn his knee brushes against Soulmate's foot,

who frowns at the disturbance.

Jungkook winces.

But the frown stays on her face.

For a long time.

Jungkook gently,

gently

drops to a knee beside her.

Brushing a strand of her hair

away from her cheek.

Are you dreaming?

He thinks at her.

Are you dreaming of me?

Are you going to let me forget you?

Forget us?

Do I have to be afraid every time you sleep now?

------

He shoves the sofa.

"You have to turn it!" she laughs.

"Ya! What is this noise? It's almost midnight!"

J-hope comes out of his room, his hair ruffled.

"Sorry hyung," Jungkook laughs,

not looking at all sorry.

"We are just trying to move this into my room."

You giggle.

"I say we, but she's not doing any work," Jungkook points at you accusingly,

a grin on his face.

"Why are you stealing our sofa for your room?" J-hope demands.

"Good night, hyung!" Jungkook laughs again,

waving at you to run for it,

and he pushes his body weight into the sofa,

practically running with his legs

shoving it down the hall,

the giant piece of furniture making an ear splitting racket

as it drags across the wooden floor

enough to wake ghosts,

and surely Yoongi.

Jungkook finally turns it through the doorway into his room,

the two of you escaping

before anyone else,

Yoongi,

comes to complain.

J-hope stands in the darkness,

yelling

"Ya!"

---------

"There," Jungkook smiles, patting the bed.

The sofa has been lined up against the bed, successfully widening the bed and immediate sleeping area.

"I'll take the sofa side, you can have the bed," he insists,

playfully pushing your hand aside

as you try to point and argue.

"I already feel bad enough that you have to stay here for our healing's sake.

You should at least have my bed."

His tone final,

Jungkook vaults over the back of the sofa,

landing on the extra pile of blanket and pillow he had stolen from the living room.

You squeeze much more awkwardly past the armrest,

climbing onto the bed.

"Thank you," you say.

And it's a little weird, pulling Jungkook's own original blanket over yourself.

"You should use my blankets," he had shrugged.

"I just washed them.

I'm good at doing laundry,"

and it's almost a boast, how proudly he says it.

"These living room ones..." he wrinkles his nose.

"I think there's cracker crumbs on here."

You laugh shyly, trying to get used to the smell of his detergent

literally as a blanket over you.

Sensing your discomfort,

even though clearly a little uncomfortable himself too,

Jungkook clears his throat,

plops down

and extends his arm.

"Turn out the light switch beside you.

And let's heal and get some sleep," he says, too nonchalantly.

You do find a light switch just within reach.

And he's right.

The moment the light turns out, the awkwardness dissolves.

In the darkness,

you reach your hand out to the edge of the bed,

to the border where it meets the sofa Jungkook is lying on.

As your arms touch

and the golden healing begins,

he chuckles.

"I know we have so much to talk about.

Things we need to talk about.

But when we're here, doing this...

I just don't even care.

You know?"

Your heart starts leaping madly like it was trying to become a rope-skipping champion.

"Yeah," you whisper.

"I know."

"No matter what it is, we'll face it together," he says, his voice steady.

"Okay," you whisper back.

"Let's get some sleep?"

You whisper,

"Goodnight."

Jungkook turns his wrist,

and slowly

winds his long fingers

through yours.

With his voice low in his throat,

he utters into the dark,

"Goodnight, ."
