And then Jeon Jungkook punches his fist through the car window.

----------------------------------------------------------------

It's instant.

The red energy explodes away from his bonding hand.

But also, it's agony.

It was a terrible idea.

The glass cracks but doesn't shatter.

Jungkook is clutching is hand, tears in his eyes,

His driver yelling at him, exclaiming WHAT in the world-

But Jungkook feels it.

There's a hook in his chest,

pulling on something, anchoring on something in the distance.

But he's just gasping for breath, unable to do anything...

And the anchor moves.

He can feel the tie getting shorter, the pull getting stronger.

He knows he's definitely bruised two of his knuckles, but he hopes he hasn't broken a finger.

And as the bright red and purple bruising starts swelling around his knuckles...

The hook in his chest is drawing in closer.

He didn't take your hand.

In the soulmate dream,

he had clearly been there,

And your arms were reached out toward each other,

fingertips were only inches apart...

and you understood what needed to be done,

And you could see in his eyes that he had understood too.

And you smiled at him,

opened your hands,

Because you believed in the two of you,

having just been through the terrible healing together,

having woken up with your head completely healed,

after he had kissed you...

It all seemed so meant to be...

You had trusted him.

But he hadn't put his hand in yours.

The bonding dream had ended.

And despite being hurt,

and being your pride stinging sharply...

you thought maybe he just wasn't ready,

maybe he just needed time...

That was alright.

He had been struggling with the idea of bonding since the beginning.

But then,

in the morning,

even as playful,

and close as you thought he'd been,

as he left you, to go to practice,

he had returned to you,

To the same room,

just a stranger

A stranger who didn't believe a word you said.

She runs.

the wind streaming through her hair,

and her laptop, shoved roughly back into its carrier, is bumping against her hip

as she ,

Her lungs tight and her breathing ragged

Jungkook...

She gets honked at when she cuts across a side street,

the agony in her hand too distracting, the pull too forceful.

And it's not too far.

She's only sprinted five blocks when she recognizes the black car parked by a side alley,

a man standing beside it, looking frantic.

A staff member of Bighit, she recognizes him.

He gestures at her as she nears,

and Jungkook must be in the car

because she's being drawn to it, the red line pulling at her.

The older man opens the car door,

and she practically jumps into the car,

practically colliding into Jungkook,

who is staring at her, his eyes wide.

She's panting, but grabbing for his arm,

checking his ridiculously bruised knuckles,

and she doesn't understand what happened to him...

She just presses her forehead to his hand,

the next moment

unabashedly crawling into his arms,

sitting on her knees

between his legs

leaning her side against his chest,

wanting the Healing,

still panting from her run...

Ignoring his utter shock,

as she snuggles against him,

and wills the Healing to start.

Finally he realizes what she's trying to do

and

he pulls away.

It's not worth the pain they would have to go through.

He could heal normally,

He didn't need the soulmate magic .

He didn't want this.

"Stop," he whispers,

aware that the driver was worried and keeping tabs on what they were doing.

He didn't want them to look improper, he didn't want anyone to see that way...

She's frowning, not understanding why he wouldn't let her Heal him,

And to make her stop fighting him,

climbing all over him,

Jungkook grips his struggling soulmate around her waist.

"Stop," he says,

his tone so commanding,

that she hesitates.

But then in the very next instant she's all

"I just want to-"

"I don't want that," Jungkook growls.

"I don't need it. Stop."

She finally meets his gaze, her eyes confused, uncomprehending,

"But... you're hurt."

"I'm fine. It's not serious.

I only did it..."

To find you.

To be with you.

"-to test the bond effect."

She slumps.

"What?"

"I... I was trying to understand how I was able to find you last time. "

"You hurt yourself... on purpose?"

Jungkook shrugs.

He is busy trying to look nonchalant

so he doesn't see it coming.

But she lets out a choked sob and Jungkook is stunned to see tears falling down her cheeks.

"I... I ran here... I was so scared...

You..."

She's pushing away from him, the golden light is dissipating and Jungkook doesn't want it to end.

"Hey, it's not a big deal," Jungkook says,

trying to wipe the grimace from his face because actually,

his hand was definitely, definitely in a lot of pain.

"It's not a big deal?? Your hand is

She's furious.

"You... you hurt yourself, just to... I can't even... you-"

He can see the second she shuts down,

Shuts him out,

Because once again he's done the wrong thing,

And she's just had enough-

Her face closes off to him.

She turns

and she's gripping for the door handle,

pulling it open...

And Jungkook is panicking,

he grabs her wrist,

with his hand that isn't hurt,

And begs.

"Wait, please."

He doesn't recognize his own voice.

He doesn't recognize himself.

He doesn't know why he's failing again and again with her.

Was Jungkook just not cut out to make her happy?

Fear and doubt course through his veins

his heartbeat skipping wildly

As she looked up at him,

her brows dipped in anger,

and he wonders why she's mad this time.

He doesn't know,

and he's so distraught

because with her he tries so hard

and fails so hard.

But he just wants to apologize for last time.

"I'm so sorry," Jungkook says.

Guilt wrecks him; his eyes are wild with remorse.

He reaches his hand out to her,

and hesitates,

his hand hovering an inch away from her cheek.

"No matter what things look like, I should have trusted you.

You're my

How could I have let this come between us?

I was so stupid, I'm sorry."

He rakes a hand through his hair, almost tearing his roots out in frustration.

She doesn't let go of the door handle.

Jungkook dips his head.

"Please," he whispers.

His bruised hand is in agony.

He can't focus.

Driver hyung is standing outside the window,

pointedly not looking at them, trying to give them privacy,

but by the way he's pacing and practically bouncing in distress,

Jungkook doesn't think they have much time

until the older man insists that Jungkook go to a doctor.

"Let me heal you," she bargains.

"Please, just talk to me,"

Jungkook tries again.

"Let me heal you. First."

"That takes too long, just, I wanted to tell you that I'm sorry, I was wrong, so wrong-"

"You don't get to call all the shots, Jungkook," she snaps.

She's staring at his hand, which is turning purple.

And she finally lets go of the door handle,

to extend her other hand,

open,

clearly insisting on Healing him.

And Jungkook finally consents,

his heart heavy,

because he doesn't know what else to do;

she won't listen.

And he hates it

he hates it as she pulls him in

and the golden light begins

Because this was not how he wanted this

This had meant so much to him

It had felt so beautiful

And now it was happening

with anger and distress in their hearts

With a wall up between them

and Jungkook feels like it's been tainted

as the pain begins

and takes over.

When she opens her eyes again,

she's both embarrassed yet touched

by the fact that she's sprawled on top of Jungkook's chest.

Jungkook, who has his eyes closed,

and is lying horizontally over the back seat.

She had been asleep on top of him.

He has one arm gently hooked over her waist,

like his last thought had been worry

that his soulmate would fall off of him

in her sleep.

But he's breathing deep and slow now,

his chest so warm

it radiated through both their shirts

and made her cozy.

And when she glances at his hand,

it's healed.

No sign of the swelling or bruises.

His bold knuckles,

and his slender, long fingers,

back to their normal way.

She shivers to remember the pain that Healing had cost them.

The man who is the driver

Is looking gently at them

through the mirror

from the front seat.

She blushes,

to realize the position they were in,

pressed together,

and immediately sits up,

pushing away from Jungkook.

His dark eyes fly open.
