Maya looked out the car window, tears in her eyes as she watched them take Nick away. He looked up, their eyes meeting as the cop next to him helped him get into the back of the police car due to his hands being cuffed. She sniffles as she looks up and meets her dad's sympathetic eyes through the rear view mirror.

"You are never to see that boy again," he speaks, maker her cry harder. "Do you understand?"

Without a word, she nods, crying harder as he starts the car and drives away, leaving him behind.

Earlier....

Maya waited in the car and watched as Nick handed money to his old best friend Jordan. Jordan was a bit older than Nick by two years, and served as some sort of older brother slash fatherly type that he's always wanted. Jordan was everything Nick wanted to be. Calm, cool, collected, goes through life without problems, seemingly so, and has a stable home life.

The couple of times Nick's been kicked out of his home due to Harry not liking his attitude or whatever it was he didn't like at the moment, Nick could always count on Jordan and his parents to give him a place to stay for a couple of days before his mom in inevitably comes looking for him and takes him back.

Jordan handed him the tickets, looking behind him to see Maya watching from a distance. "Hot date?" He teases, making Nick playfully shove him. "Didn't think you were the type to spend more than ten dollars on a girl," he said as he leaned against his doorframe while Nick pocketed the tickets.

Nick looked behind him, locking eyes with Maya before sending her a reassuring smile, making her smile back. "Trust me Jay...she's worth it," he looks back up to him.

Jordan rolled his eyes. "Obviously. You're spending more than ten dollars on her," he points out, making them both laugh. Once their laughter ended and then settled into comfortable silence, Jordan spoke up again. "She seems really nice, from what I've heard other people at school say," he laughs. "You're taking a big risk aren't you?"

Nick scrunched his eyebrows in confusion. "What do you mean?" He asked.

"Being here. Being with her," Jordan says, crossing his arms. "And from the look of your face, your stepdad's not too happy either?"

Nick shook his head. "I️ don't-"

"Don't worry, we don't have to talk about it," His friend waved off. "But what I'm saying is, you've changed. Whether it's for the better or worse, I️ don't know cause we spoken much these days, but I️ have seen you going to school a lot more lately," he states. "Which, I️ thought was really weird at first but now I️ see why."

Nick nodded, looking down slightly. And for the first time, he allowed himself to open up to another male. "Yeah, she makes me wanna be better," he tells him. "So I'm gonna try."

"That's all good and well Nick, but," Jordan leans closer. "what if you guys don't last? Then what?" He asked the impending question.

Nick didn't answer, not wanting to even think about them not lasting. "You think we won't last?" He sounded annoyed.

Jordan sighed. "I️ think...you should be working on you, for you," he advised gently, changing his perspective. "Listen to me," he reached out and grabbed his shoulder, "I'm sure she's a nice girl. Probably stable, which is what you've needed ever since you were born. But you cannot depend on her for your happiness kid," he whispers, slightly opening his eyes. "Nick, what you're doing here, you're dragging her down with you man. That's not good, that's not...love."

Nick, feeling shaken by this revelation, takes a step back away from him. "I️-I️ gotta go," he tells him. "Thanks for a tickets. Have a nice night."

"Nick," Jordan calls out to him, making him turn around to face him one last time. "You say she makes you a better person," he speaks, "then be that better person. For her and for yourself."

Nick looks at him one last time before quickly hurrying down the driveway to where Maya was waiting. He gets in and pauses for a moment, trying to process what Jordan just says.

"You okay?" Maya asks, breaking him out of his trance.

"What?" He looks up, meeting her eyes. "Yeah! Yeah, I'm fine. I️ just....can't believe we're seeing Queen," he lies, making her break out into an excited smile.

"Ugh! I️ know!" She practically squeals and he starts the car and peels out the driveway. "It's what you've wanted for forever and it's what I've wanted ever since you've introduced me to them," she laughs as she sits back during the drive. "Oh man, my parents-"

"Nope. Don't even think about it," Nick interrupts her.

"But-"

Nick silences her. "We deal with that when we get back," he lightly scolds her. "Tonight, we have fun. Only us, okay?" He holds out his hand towards her, using the other one to steer. She places her hand in his and he kisses the back of her hand, making her giggle slightly. She then reaches over and turns the radio on, turning the volume up on an unfamiliar song.

"Nick?" Maya called out, getting a "hmm" in response. "What happened after I️ left?" She curiously asked.

"I️ told you," he said, "my mom called the cops on me."

Nick locked the door behind him and turned around to face Harry as Maya screamed and banged on the door, demanding for him to open up. He breathed heavily against the door, recovering from his previous fight with his step-father. "You...fucking bastard!" Nick yelled at him, earning him another hit to the face, this time, Harry's ring catching on the skin near his eye, slicing it. Nick quickly recovered from the blow and quickly tried to scurry away but it was no use. The man was stronger than him by years and caught him by the leg, dragging him towards him to that he could give him a proper beating.

Panicked, Nick quickly looked around to anything to use to defend himself and his eyes landed on an empty bottle of beef settled near the armchair. Nick made a grab for it and smashes it on the side of Harry's head, making him fall back in shock. Harry gingerly touches the back of his head, bringing his hand back to show blood. He glares at Nick and takes a step forward, as if to attack but instead goes down like a rock, falling face first into the floor.

Nick breathes heavily as he takes a moment to assess the situation. From the looks of the torn up living room, the blood and bruises, it was not good. Before he could even do anything, he heard the lock on the door behind him unlock and freezes as soon as his mom and brother walks in.

"Oh my god!" His mom screams as she drops the groceries that she was previously holding. She rushes up and shoves Nick aside, kneeling next to Harry instead. A flash of hurt and anger goes through him as she takes his stepdad's head into her lap. "Nick what did you do?" She yells at him.

"Me? Are you serious?!" He yells back at her. He was fed up at this point now.

His mom shakes her head at him. "I️ can't believe this. He does so much for us! Nick, if you killed him-"

"He doesn't do shit for me!" Nick barks back. "Do you even know what he did for me to finally fight back?" He asks. "Do you?!" He repeats.

"Daddy?" Calvin calls out from the door, looking upset.

His mom sighs. "Go to your room Cal-"

"What's wrong with daddy?" He asks with a frown.

His mother gives Nick a sharp look. "I'm calling the police," she hisses, standing up to get to the home phone to call for some help.

"Call them! I️ don't give a shit! I'm officially over this bullshit!" Nick exclaims. "You're a shitty mother who's never been on my side anyways! Today's not any different-" His words were cut off with a slap to the face from his mother.

"Get out!" She shouted. "Pack your shit and leave!" She orders.

Nick fell quiet, stunned.

"All you do is cause trouble anyways, but this," she points at an unconscious Harry and Calvin by his side, now crying," this was the last straw Nick!"

At that moment he realized that nothing he could do or say would help him. His mom really wasn't with him, as he suspected all along, and now she was throwing him out like he didn't matter all in some favor for some trash human being.

Nick gritted his teeth. "Have fun with your cheating raging alcoholic pedophile rapist husband," he says spitefully, making her gasp. "You better hope to God Maya and her family don't sue you out the ASS!" He says before grabbing his keys and leaving, not looking back.

"It's none of your concern anyways"

Maya looks up at him, shocked. "None of my concern?" She repeats in disbelief. "None of my- pull the car over RIGHT NOW!" She shrieks.

Nick pulls over once he realized she was being deadly serious. "Jesus Maya! What's your damage?" He asks.

"You're telling me that this whole thing is NONE OF MY CONCERN?" She yells. "I️ was there Nick!"

"And I'm telling you I'm taking care of it!" He snaps back. Frustratingly, he hits the steering wheel. "Damnit Maya! I️ asked you for one thing; to not worry about it," he sighs as she crosses her arms and pouts. "I'm probably going to jail and your parents are gonna ground you for life," he says in a softer tone now, "can we please enjoy this night together?" He asks her.

She looks back over to him with a frown. "Fine," was all she said before Nick started driving again.

The crowd around them cheered deafeningly loud as they waited for the band members to to come out. Maya cling to Nick as hard as she could, scared that she'd be swept away from the crowd if she didn't. Nick wrapped a protective arm around her, keeping her close, but also having the time of his life screaming along with the crowd.

"Freddie! Freddie! Freddie!"

A helicopter descended from the sky, making everyone go nuts around them. Maya squealed slightly as someone shoved into them, making Nick aggressively shove him back before continuing to cheer his favorite band in the world on.

She saw a couple of people get on each other's shoulder and thought it was a great idea. She'll do anything not to get crushed. She leans up and talks into Nicki's ear about the idea and nods. He lowers himself to her level and she places either leg on each shoulder before being lifted in the air with a squeal.

"I️ got you!" Nick assures her, wrapping his hands around her legs. Maya looks around the crowd before looking back at the stage and seeing the members grab their instruments and set up before starting to play. The crowd starts going crazy as they start their opening number with their most popular song "We Will Rock You".

Maya waves her hands in the air to the music, trying not to move too much or they'd both topple over. A couple of songs later, and she's back on the ground, her head on his chest and his arm wrapped around her like he promised. "I️ won't let you go," he said when he lowered her back down. Queen was just about to wrap up their set, with one final song.

They both walked out of the arena, hand in hand, smiling and giggling as the effects of the concert haven't worn off yet. "That was amazing!" She gushed next to him as they walked back to his car.

"It was electric! They're way better live-"

Two cops had stepped out right in front of them, stopping them in their tracks. Their high energy suddenly replaced with cold fear. And then her dad appeared, crossing his arms, looking angry as hell.

"Amaya Grace Johnson," He sounded disappointed and upset, "you are in so much trouble," he speaks, making her look down at the ground in shame.

Nick spoke up first. "It's not her fault! This was all MY idea-"

"Of course it was your idea! She would never do something like this otherwise!" Her dad yelled at him. "Sneaking our at night with a boy I️ don't know an hour away? How shocked we were to find cops at our door, asking where you were? Only to find out you snuck out? Do you know how worried sick me and your mother have been?" He explained.

"Dad I'm sorry-"

Her dad reached out and grabbed her wrist, harshly pulling her behind him. "We will talk about your punishment when we get home," he stated angrily.

Nick saw this and instantly reacted, yanking her back, making her shriek. "You can't treat her like that!" He argued.

"Nick!" She gasped.

The cops rushed forward and pulled him away from her, and shoved him face first into the nearest car, hands behind his back. "Nicholas Brewer, you're under arrest for aggravated assault," the white male cop announced. "You have the right to remain silent-"

"Wait!" He called out, tilting his head towards her. "Can I please talk to Maya one last time?"

At this point, the cop and his partner, a white female cop, brought him back up to his feet, facing Maya and her dad.

"No," her dad answered coldly.

"Please, just- just three minutes," he pleaded, making Maya looking up at her dad as well.

"Please dad?" She asked.

Mr. Johnson looked between both kids and sighed. "Three minutes," he stated before backing off.

Maya rushes over towards him and wraps her arms around him, despite him not being able to hug back due to his hands cuffed behind his back. Nick sighs and hangs his head, Jordan's voice coming back to haunt him. Nick, what you're doing here, you're dragging her down with you man. That's not good, that's not...love. "Don't worry," she says, "I'm with you, okay?" She says, making him look down at her in adoration. "I'll do whatever it takes-"

"Maya, stop," he says, making her look up at him. He then lets out a dejected sighed. "I️ love you," he whispers loud enough only for her to hear.

"I️ love you too," she replies, reaching up to press a kiss on his cheek.

"But us?" He looks into her eyes now. "We are never gonna work Maya. Never," he says. She steps back as if he punched her.

"Nick why would you say?" She asked.

"Don't you get it? We were never gonna last anyways," he grits his teeth as he lies. "I'm too messed up. You come from a good home. And I'm white trash," he states. "I️ love you Maya, I️ really do. You're the first person in a really long time to have ever been by my side, and I'm grateful for that, I️ really am-"

"But?" She now has tears in her eyes.

"I️ don't want to see you anymore," he finally lets drop. "It's over, alright? We're through."

Maya shakes her head no. "That's not true. That's not true! Nick-"

"I'm ready," Nick says louder for the cops to hear. "We can go now."

"Please don't do this, Nick," she sobs, and he turns around and ignores her. "Nick!"

"I'll...see you around," he says without looking back at her, making her cry even harder.

"You're such a coward!" She screams. "You find someone that loves you for the first time in a long time and you run away like the bitch that you are!" She angrily exclaims. Nick seemed unfazed by her words as the cops read him his rights. She feels her dad's hand on her shoulder, gently leading her away. She gets into the back seat of the car, crying her eyes out, trying to pull the pieces together.

Why did he let go of her?

And why does it seem like she can't let him go?
