Chapter Twenty Seven - Little Daredevil

"I'll be there in ten – Mac, stop pissing me the fuck off!" Roman yells in the sitting room as he talks to his friend on the phone.

I chuckle to myself as I get out of bed and walk into the bathroom to freshen up. We just returned from Australia yesterday morning after celebrating Roman's twenty-ninth birthday there and he's quite grumpy from the jet lag. The fact the team has been assigned a huge case today doesn't help things either. After I'm done in the bathroom I make my way to Roman and hug him from behind. He instantly relaxes as his hand covers mine while he ends the call.

"Coffee?"

"Yes, please. I'll just get breakfast after the meeting." He sighs as he turns around and wraps his arms around my waist.

"Well in order for me to do that you need to let me go." I grin as he leans down to press his lips to mine.

"I wish I could stay longer." He whines as he follows me to the kitchen.

I laugh as I start on his coffee while also making a quick sandwich he can have on the way. He kisses my cheek one last time before rushing to the bedroom to get changed. When I'm done I make my own breakfast before tidying up the kitchen just as he walks back into the room.

"I'll see you later okay?" He pats his jean pockets to confirm he has his wallet and phone before grabbing the coffee cup and sandwich. "Thank you!"

"Bye!" I wave as he leaves before taking my food to the sitting room.

I put on a random show as I eat my eggs and bacon before getting some coffee for myself. But just as I've finished the hot drink I find myself becoming nauseous and race to the bathroom. I make it just in time for me to kneel on the floor before I throw up my breakfast. I groan in disgust and flush when I'm done before slumping against the wall.

I've been throwing up ever since we flew out of Australia. The plane ride wasn't great either and I had put it down to having motion sickness but now I think I may be sick. Sighing I haul myself up before brushing my teeth again and calling the doctor's clinic. I make an appointment for myself in an hour's time before taking a shower.

I change into one of Roman's white t-shirts simply because I love how over-sized they are on me and pair it with my red polka dotted skirt before slipping on some flats. Clipping my hair back I leave it to air dry. I grab my purse, phone and keys before checking the time and leaving for my appointment.

The doctor's clinic is only a ten-minute drive and I spend it thinking about work and how I really don't want to take any more days off due to being sick. This is the last thing I want right now because I have some stories I need to get started on as soon as I'm back in the office. Thankfully I have this weekend to get my schedule back to normal whereas poor Roman isn't so lucky.

I find a parking space in town before making my way into the clinic. After spending about fifteen minutes in the waiting room and flipping through magazines I'm called in. My doctor, Roxanna, greets me with her usual cheery smile and a twinkle of humor flickers in her eyes when I tell her my symptoms.

"When was your last period?"

"Uh...what?" I blink in surprise at the unexpected question. "What do you mean? I'm sick. What does that have to do with my period?"

"Just tell me." She laughs lightly as she types away on her computer.

I take out my phone and go to the app where I keep track of my periods. "I-It was supposed to be three weeks ago. The last time I got my period was last month on May sixteenth! I was on holiday...oh my god, I didn't even realize I missed it! Am I...?"

"You may be pregnant so I'll take a blood test and get back to you within a few hours. I have a pregnancy test here too so can you go take it for me please?" She asks as she pulls one out from a drawer.

I nod mutely as I try and process the fact that I might be pregnant. Wow, for someone so smart sometimes I'm pretty dumb at knowing my own body, I think to myself. Forcing myself to move I make my way to the bathroom and pee on the stick. I take a minute or two to calm myself down before walking back into the room. She grabs it from me and checks after finishing with my blood work. I watch as she slides it towards me on the desk with an encouraging smile and peek to see the two very strong lines confirming that I am indeed pregnant.

"The blood test will confirm further just so there's no false positives. But with the symptoms you've been having and missing your period I do believe that you are pregnant." She smiles before squeezing my hand reassuringly. "Go home, keep yourself calm and I'll call you in a few hours okay?"

"Okay. Thank you, doctor Roxanna." I smile nervously before leaving.

As I drive back home I think about what she told me. The idea of becoming a mother has grown on me ever since I married Roman. I know how much he wants a child and I had agreed to trying for a pregnancy. But because of a high-risk case Roman was involved in before we left and working out the details for our three-week stay in Australia we put it on the back burner.

I remember a specific night before we left for our holiday now. When I had planned a date night at home, successfully cooked dinner and spoiled him just as much as he does with me. We had run out of condoms but didn't think much of it because we weren't using them much anyways.

I laugh softly as I park in front of the house before shaking my head. I can't believe there may be a chance that we succeeded in getting pregnant. As I walk inside and shut the door I stop and stare at my home in front of me. I imagine a little girl or boy running around and the thought makes my heart flutter in elation.

Sighing I trudge to the couch before taking off my shoes and laying down for a nap. As I explained to the doctor I've been feeling quite tired lately and coupled with the immense jet lag it doesn't take me long to drift off to sleep.

I'm woken up three hours later because of my phone ringing loudly. Groaning I accept the call before getting up when I realize it's doctor Roxanna. She tells me how she's just received the results of the blood test we did this morning.

"Congratulations Elena, you're going to be a mother!"

Instantly tears brim my eyes and I laugh happily. "Thank you!"

She goes through some pregnancy information with me and tells me that my vitamins prescription will be ready for collection anytime today. I thank her again before hanging up with a wide smile. Excitement flutters through me as I look down at my stomach that is yet to show any signs of being pregnant. How am I going to tell Roman? I think to myself.

I end up coming up with an idea moments later before preparing what I need. Thirty minutes later I leave the house to go back into town to pick up my prescription, pop into the grocery store before heading into some other shops. I open the boot when I have everything and place the things in the correct baskets.

The plan is to call Roman for a picnic in one of the parks we regularly visit. There's a stunning lake too where we can sit by. I have two baskets prepared for this evening – one with food for our picnic and the smaller one is filled with a small t-shirt that says, "hello daddy," a soft toy, my pregnancy test that I took with me and a cute book about being a dad. It's the best I could think of as I don't want to wait that long to tell him and I know both of us are tired still from our trip.

Texting him quickly about my plans I drive to the park when he replies saying that he'll be there in fifteen minutes. Luckily I'm able to get a spot before I grab my things and make my way inside. I finally decide on a spot in a more secluded area far from the chatter of people. I set the blanket down on the grass before putting the baskets on top. From here I can see the clear water ahead with nothing but trees surrounding the perimeter on the other side.

I get the food out and start munching on some chips with dip as I hide the smaller basket behind the bigger one beside me. As promised, fifteen minutes later I hear Roman call me as he makes his way down the trail. I wave with a wide smile that contrasts greatly to my racing heart and frazzled nerves. He looks as handsome as ever as he grins boyishly before taking a seat beside me on the blanket.

"Hey." He murmurs softly as he leans over to peck my lips. "What's all this for?"

"It's nice out today so I thought a picnic would be a good idea." I shrug as he grabs a sandwich. "Plus, I have something to tell you."

"What did you do now?" He groans dramatically and I swat his arm with a laugh.

"This..." I start as I grab the smaller basket and set it down between us. "Is for you."

He hums thoughtfully as he leaves the sandwich before taking the basket. I watch with bated breath as he opens the lid. He frowns in confusion before his eyes widen with a shaky inhale. Emerald eyes meet my teary browns and I nod when he stares at me questionably.

"We're having a baby!" He laughs breathlessly with a happy smile before pulling me into his arms. "We're going to parents Lena!"

"I know." I giggle at his excitement as he all but tugs me onto his lap. "Doctor Roxanna did my blood tests this morning and the results were positive."

"I'm so happy, this is so exciting. We're going to be great!" He rambles adorably as he looks through all the things I packed in the basket. "I love you."

"I love you too." I sigh contently as I kiss him.

"You're happy right? I know you only agreed to trying just recently –"

"Rome, I'm very happy!" I laugh as I wind my arms around his neck. "A little scared but more excited, trust me. I'm just feeling a lot of emotions right now."

"You're going to be such a great mother Lena." He smiles handsomely as he plays with a strand of my hair. "Our baby is going to be so lucky to have you, just as I am."

"Stop it! You're going to make me cry again!" I sniffle as I feel myself getting emotional.

He throws his head back as he laughs before meeting my gaze as he wipes my tears away. "Don't worry about a thing okay? I'm with you every step of the way, my family is here and we'll get yours to come down too at some point. Fuck, we need to get a new house actually to make room for our baby so I need to start looking –"

"Breathe." I order with an amused laugh when he starts to ramble again.

"Sorry." He smiles sheepishly as his eyes shine bright with happiness, love and so much excitement. "I can't wait, there's so much to do!"

"I know." I whisper with a shake of my head. "I can't wait to meet him or her."

"If our child turns out to be a little daredevil like you I'm going to have my hands full." He smirks as we get back to our picnic.

"It'll be so funny to see that." I snicker as I imagine a stressed Roman having to deal with his troublemaker wife and baby. "What gender do you think our baby will be?"

"Either one works because I'm going to teach all my kids how to kick ass." He grins devilishly as I roll my eyes. "I think a girl. I'll be wrapped around her pinky finger no doubt. Imagine how cute she'll look in dresses – but no dresses or cute shit when she goes to school though! I'll scare those stupid boys away if they ever think of going near my baby."

I can't hold it in anymore and burst out laughing. He's already so protective and I can only imagine the world of pain our daughter will be in if she ever likes someone. "Rome, eventually she's –"

"Not listening." He shakes his head stubbornly.

"Roman –"

"We're not discussing our daughter dating anyone until she gets to that age. End of story." He frowns as he snacks on some fruit. "And if we have a boy he's certainly not going near Judah or Romeo. Those two will make him into a player faster than we can blink!"

"Yes, sir." I mock salute him with a chuckle.

"Did I ever tell you how much I love it when you say that?" He tugs me and I land on top of him with a surprised squeal. "It's so fucking sexy."

"You're sexy, agent Jackson." I wink teasingly as his hands wander past my hips. "Roman! We're in public!"

"Car sex?"

"No!" I whisper-shout as a raging blush overtakes my features.

"I love it when you blush." He chuckles as he peppers kisses to my heated cheeks.

He leans down to kiss my stomach that shows no signs yet. I smile tenderly at the action as he rubs his hand against it. His emerald eyes meet mine and I find myself recalling all our memories from how we met to now.

"My little daredevils." He whispers sweetly against my lips before capturing them in a fierce kiss.

I smile into it with a content sigh. I can't wait to see what the future holds for us next. But for now, I settle down in his comforting embrace as we remember the good times.

It's been quite the wild ride.
