《Outlawry》Chapter 31 - Ava//Painful Proclamations

The police brought me down to the station where I was given a glass of water. They sat me down at a desk where a man called Detective Sumner questioned me.

"Ava Lane..." he began. He sat down at his desk at flung a file onto it. "It took a lot of trouble to find you."

"Trouble?" I asked nervously. "What do you mean?"

"Well, you traveled across almost three stated to get here, it looks like."

"Three states?" I asked incredulously. "I had no clue."

"Miss Lane, I must ask. Where you kidnapped and held hostage?"

"Held hostage?" I asked."Who is your person of interest?"

"His name is Luther White."

I shrunk back a bit. I had never heard Luther's full name before. I didn't even know what his last name was before. "Oh yeah, he goes to my school," I stalled.

"Your friend Samantha claims that hours before your disappearance, you sent her a text message that read somewhere along the lines that Luther was kidnapping you, and to call the cops because it was not a joke."

I put on an act of an annoyed teenager. I rolled my eyes and let out a sigh. "He didn't kidnap me. My friend totally just stole my phone and typed that in." He lifted his chin and nodded suspiciously. "I skipped the rest of school and was just feeling really depressed. I started to run away, but my car window got broken because my tire kicked something up and hit it. So since I didnt want to drive with a broken window in the rain, I took the bus as far away from there as possible. I ended up here and made a friend with some girl and stayed at her house." I slowly looked up. "How did you find me?"

"Miss Lane, I have more than one reason that leads me to believe that everything that you've told me is a blatant lie."

I lifted an eyebrow. "Why would I lie about getting kidnapped?"

"Threats, you're trying to protect someone, there are several reasons..."

"Trust me, there is no one I would want to protect if they kidnapped me."

"Nate Hawkins. Does that name ring a bell to you?"

"Yeah, I met Nate a few days ago at church. Why?"

Detective Sumner reclined in his chair and crossed his hands across his stomach. "He mentioned that on the day of your disappearance, you told him that you and Luther shared a...disturbing sexual experience. And that you wanted his help...?"

I sighed again. "I don't know why I said that."

"Mm hm." He sat up straight. "What about Antonio Travieso?" I furrowed my brows, confused. "Taco?" A chill ran through me. He smirked at my reaction. "Ah...you do know Taco." I squirmed in my seat. "Well, once your abductors, Luther and his friend Gomez came to set free Taco's prisoners, one of them contacted the police, informing us of Taco's location. We arrested him. He freely spilled all the beans. His son, Gomez, and Luther had taken you and brought you here for whatever reason, and that the three of you were staying at the house of Gomez's sister. He gave the address. This is how we found you, you see."

I pressed my lips together as my eyebrows curled up. I looked down and nodded as I released the long-held breath that I had kept suppressed to myself during his whole monologue. "Yes. It's all true." I had officially cracked. However, it did feel good to finally tell somebody everything that had happened to me. I pulled my orange hair back to reveal the bite marks that still remained from saturday night. "Luther did this to me," I explained. "But Gomez was not involved. None of this was his fault." I didn't want to get Gomez into any trouble with the law. He was a good man, who was simply trying to keep afloat in the cruel world of drugs and murder. "He was simply interested in helping to get me back from Taco and getting his revenge on him."

"Where is Luther?" Sumner asked me. "He isn't back at the house that we found you at. Nor is he in any of the houses surrounding." He leaned in close. I could smell the coffee on his breath. "Is there something that you're not telling me?"

I shook my head as I wiped a tear away from my cheek. I took in a deep breath and looked the man in the eye. "I don't know where he went. He ran off when he heard the sirens."

The detective nodded his head and wrote down everything that I had just told him. "Don't you worry, Ava. You are going to be home by tomorrow and we'll find Luther." I nodded my head, but opened my mouth to speak.

"Thank you, but I don't believe that you'll be finding Luther." The man slowly looked up from his notebook.

"What exactly is that supposed to mean, might I inquire?" he asked.

"Knowing Luther, he is very good at staying off of the radar."

A heavy door shut. I looked up, to see Taco coming out of the interrogation room in handcuffs and being forced out of the office. We made eye contact for a few moments. He cast me an evil smirk before disappearing out of the police office. I quickly turned my head back to Detective Sumner. "Yeah, I'm ready to go back home."

He nodded and stood up. I followed suit. He put a hand on my back, prodding me to go forward. "Then come along this way, I'll have an officer take you home right away."

"Okay," I spoke softly. He led me outside and into the parking lot. I got into a police car with one of the officers that had taken me to the police department in the first place earlier that n. We began driving away, and as we drove through the night, I slowly drifted asleep.

I awoke some time later. We were driving on an old country road, and the sun had barely risen. There weren't a lot of cars driving along the old highway, but there was one that was approaching quickly from behind us. They sped past us with great speed, making me snap awake from the sound of the muffler. The officer turn on his sirens.

"This person is speeding," he spoke to me. "I hope you don't mind if I pull them over to write a ticket."

I shook my head while rubbing my eyes and yawning. "No, go ahead."

We sped up to catch up with the car. It pulled over to the side of the road, as did we. The officer started writing down the ticket. I didn't pay much attention to it, but looked out the window at the scenic view to my right. The officer got out and shut the door, causing the car to shake a little. He walked up to the car that he had just pulled over. My eyes suddenly widened. I would've recognized that crappy car from anywhere.

"Luther..." I whispered. There was suddenly a bunch of shouting. I looked to the police man, to see that he had a gun pointed at his face. His hands were held up. "No!" I screamed. I got out of the car and started running over to the jalopy. Gomez got out of the car, the gun still pointed at the police man, forcing him to his knees. I stopped running and stared on in horror. Luther creeped out from the passenger side and grabbed my shoulders. He put his lips next to my ear.

"Ava," he spoke. "Get into the car."

My face contorted in fear for the man, I ran into the backseat of Gomez's car. Luther slammed the door behind me, causing me to flinch. Gomez handed the gun to Luther. "Would you mind doing the honors?"

Luther took the gun and turned the safety off. "NO!" I screamed, but I was too late. Luther shot the man in the head, the bullet sounding like a canon in the empty highway. He took the ticket that the officer had made as he and Gomez dragged the man back into the police car. I silently cried as the two of them made it back into the car. Gomez zoomed off.

"We know that you spilled the beans, Ava," Gomez rasped. I looked up. "That just made things a whole lot more difficult. For all three of us."
