《King's Corp》Chapter 3

Jungkook feels like he's going to die.

After 6 hours of non-stop typing, emailing and reading, Jungkook is certain that he is minutes away from exploding. His brain throbs with the workload that lingers at his hands as he tirelessly continues to work without a break. Jungkook was supposed to take a break 2 hours ago but here he is, starving to death as he writes an email to some chick called Brenda about how much he would appreciate her feedback on a product released back in 2008.

Jungkook sends the email and then pulls away from the laptop rapidly, almost as if the keys burned him. Mr Kim looks over at him from his desk, his face slightly scrunching in disapproval before he casually slips back into his work. Jungkook ignores the man's scrutiny and lays his head on his chair while heaving out a small breath, letting the exhaustion from these endless hours of work slowly settle into his gut. Jungkook has been working his ass off to get Mr Kim's task completed but he's barely halfway through. He knows he needs to keep working tirelessly if he wants to finish the job, seeing that the task itself is rather preposterous, but right now he just needs a break. He needs coffee.

"I'll be back in a minute, sir," he declares as he rushes out of the office. Taehyung barely acknowledges the boy as he whizzes past and just continues to type away on his laptop.

Jungkook wanders around the top floor for a second, wondering where the break room is. He was shown it just a day ago when he was given a tour of the building but he's already forgotten, given how big the building is.

He looks around a bit longer before hesitantly walking up to a man standing near a printer. "Um, excuse me," he mumbles, attempting to get the man's attention. The blond-haired man spins around and looks down at him, meeting the younger with his dark gaze.

"Yes?" He questions, voice dripping with the same authority that Taehyung holds which doesn't fail to send cowardly shivers down Jungkook's back.

"Uh, I'm new a-and I'm looking for the staff room, do you by any chance know where it is?"

The man runs his eyes along the smaller boy's frame, scrutinising him silently with his penetrating gaze before finally letting his eyes rest back on his face. "Which department do you work under?" He asks, avoiding Jungkook's initial question.

Jungkook steps back from the man and fiddles anxiously with his fingers. "Oh- I-I'm Mr Kim's new secretary," Jungkook stutters while shifting his gaze to the floor.

There's a pause to the conversation that leaves the residues of stifling tension, it causes Jungkook to shift his weight from one leg to another.

Finally, the man speaks up. "Ah, I see," he says, his tone a lot softer than earlier. "Well then, come with me. I'll show you to the break room."

Jungkook looks up with wide eyes, slightly surprised by his offer. "O-oh, thank you."

He nods in response and then leads the boy through several hallways, prompting light conversation as he does so.

"I'm surprised you're still here," he says, side-glancing the smaller who speed walks next to him in attempt to keep up with his long strides.

Jungkook smiles awkwardly, "Oh? How so?"

"My brother doesn't usually hire secretaries, no matter how many times I tell him to."

Jungkook's eyes widen. "Your brother? You mean Mr Kim is your brother?"

The elder turns around to look at the boy, a soft smile that arouses his deep dimples spreading across his face. "That's right. My names Kim Namjoon. I'm the boss's brother."

Jungkook widens his eyes and immediately straightens his posture. "Oh, uh- nice to meet you sir, I-I'm Jungkook." The brunette can't help but cringe at his own words.

However, Namjoon doesn't seem to mind. He chuckles softly before continuing his stride. "Nice to meet you, Jungkook. And I must say, I'm impressed. Considering the fact that you're still in one piece."

"What do you mean by that, sir?" Jungkook asks as he scurries after the man.

"As I mentioned before, my brother doesn't accept secretaries. He's all for individuality and doesn't believe in the help of others. You're the first secretary he's accepted in years, but saying this I must warn you..." Namjoon says, his voice dropping into a cautionary tone.

"Knowing him, he's probably already trying to plan something to try and bring you down. He's testing you. He doesn't want you here but after months of me relentlessly pestering him to get a secretary, he's not going to exactly fire you just yet. He's going to do whatever it is in his power to try and get you to quit. If you really want this job, Jungkook, I would advice you to withstand all that, regardless of how hard it may seem." Namjoon says, his eyes boring into the smaller.

Jungkook gulps, his eyes widened. Exactly how much will he have to withstand? And the question is, can he withstand it? Jungkook grips his fists in determination. No, he will withstand it, whatever it is. "I'm not going to quit," he states while looking up at the older, his eyes conveying this sense of resolution.

Namjoon smiles, "then I'm counting on you. Don't let me down. Taehyung may act like he's in a one-man show but he needs help. The workload he gets is appalling but every secretary he gets justs ends up quitting or being fired." A crease forms over the man's forehead as he speaks, tarnishing his youthful appearance with the glimpse of an aged frown.

Jungkook frowns upon hearing the worry in Namjoon's tone. In the magazines and interviews and the photos on Instagram, Mr Kim, or should he say Taehyung, looks likes a successful man that has his life put together. But what's this? His own brother is admitting that he's drowning in work and needs help? Jungkook would have never imagined it.

He looks up at the older and smiles gently. "I promise," he whispers with certainty in his voice. "I won't quit. This...this is truly my dream job. I worked hard to be here and...and I'll keep working harder to stay."

Namjoon grins at that. He brings his hand up to the boy and ruffles his locks. "Then welcome to the team, Jungkook." Jungkook shies away from the man's charming smile and gently smiles back at him. "Well, here's your pitstop. I presume you can find you're way back?"

Jungkook nods, "Yes sir, thank you."

"No problem, kiddo. Oh and, I gave you my name for a reason. So quit being so formal and just call me by it. Okay?" The man says while smiling.

Jungkook nods frantically. "Yes si- N-Namjoon."

The two then part ways and Jungkook finally enters the break room. The room is surrounded by inviting couches and cozy-looking bean bags along with a large marble table stacked with food. Jungkook is highly tempted to go and take a nap on one of the bean bags but he shakes off the feeling and instead walks on over towards the table. He spots a coffee machine and smiles gleefully. He hums a little tune to himself as he pulls out a paper cup. He places it under the machine and turns it on, watching the burnt gold pouring seamlessly into the cup.

The aroma of coffee beans invades his nostrils, making him sigh out contentedly. Soon his cup is filled to the brim with that rich liquid that has wafts of steam twirling out of its fiery body. Jungkook grips onto the cup with both his hands, letting the tingling warmth spread into his palms and warm up his cold skin. He smiles and starts to walk out of the break room but pauses in his steps when a thought runs through his mind.

Wouldn't Mr Kim want a coffee?

A pause, a shake of his head, another pause, hesitance and before Jungkook knows it, he's spinning around and waddling back to that coffee machine to make yet another cup of coffee for his boss.

It's the right thing to do, he thinks to himself. Taehyung's been working just as long as him and would probably be tired as well. And plus, this is what secretaries do right? They make their boss' coffee? Yes. That right. Jungkook assures himself that his actions are valid and then picks up the second cup of coffee. With the two piping hot beverages in his hand, he makes his way over towards the office room once again, carefully manoeuvring through the halls to avoid bumping into any furniture.

He finally enters the office and places his cup on his desk. He then slowly walks over to Mr Kim's desk and clears his throat, attempting to grasp the man's attention.Dark eyes look up at him, causing his head to subconsciously bow in submission from how effortlessly deadly they are.

"I-I made you a coffee sir, since y-you've been worki..."

"...did I ask for one?" The man interrupts, his gaze unwavering and his tone hitting firmly.

Jungkook freezes. Shit, he wasn't expecting this. "U-Uh, but I thought..."

"...Answer my question, Jeon. Did I ask for one?"

Jungkook drops his head to stare at the polished tiles, attempting to hide the blooming flush of embarrassment that spread across his cheeks.

"No, sir," he squeaks out meekly.

The man stands up, much to Jungkook's horror, and then walks around his desk to where the boy is cowering in fear. He hovers over the smaller, eyes staring at his mop of brunette hair. Jungkook, scared to meet the older's gaze keeps his head tilted down.

Jungkook slightly startles when a firm finger slips under his chin and then lifts his face up. Now, staring at those intimidating eyes once again, Jungkook feels like he could dissolve out of pure fear.

"Rule number one, Jeon. Never do something unless I tell you to. I'm your boss, your superior. The CEO of the building your standing in. If I don't say it, you don't do it. Understand?" The man says while dropping his tone into an eerily calm one.

Jungkook wants to cry. All he did was get the man some damn coffee and now he's being lectured about company rules. Namjoon's words ring in his head I would advise you to withstand all that, regardless of how hard it may seem.

Jungkook takes a small breath, letting the man's words repeat in his head. He nods hesitantly at the ravenette before mumbling out, "I'm sorry, sir."

The elder stares at the boy's big eyes for a few seconds before his gaze flits over to the slight pout that has unconsciously made its way onto his lips. His eyes linger on the plump pink flesh for a few seconds. The room is silent and the tension is stifling. Jungkook wants to run and hide away from the man's dark stare but all he can do is meekly stand there like a deer in the headlights.

"Get back to work now," the older mutters lowly, seemingly breaking out of whatever trance he was in.

Jungkook nods hastily and practically sprints back to his desk. He takes a seat and lets out a deep breath. He daringly glances over at the man and notices him now sipping out of the beverage. Jungkook almost scoffs out loud. He gave that whole lecture about not asking for coffee yet he still drinks it anyways? What a prick.

Jungkook dismisses his thoughts and then turns back to his desk. Piles of paper glare up at him, making him feel slightly nauseous with the heavy presence of overbearing work. He sighs once again and continues on with his task, already knowing that it's going to be a long day.

~

Jungkook didn't get any sleep that night. He went home at 3 am and took a shower before continuing with his work. And despite his efforts, the piles of paper were still towering over his desk.

So with desperation tugging at his heart, Jungkook decides to work his way through the night and into the depths of the afternoon, not daring to take a break or even get up to stretch. Jungkook doesn't know how he hasn't crashed yet but he assumes it's the pure adrenaline of possibly losing his job that riles his efforts.

And so with red-rimmed eyes, tense limbs and an empty stomach, Jungkook works, and works, and works.

He works as the sun settles into the depths of the horizon for the second day in a row. He works as shadows stretch longer, creating distorted figures that sit placidly in the office room which is drowning in a warm pool of pastel hues. He works against the frantic echo of the clock, his fingers racing faster than the ticking arms. And finally, as the shadows disintegrate into empty carcasses of space, as the shy pastels replace with stringent cool tones, as the clock runs threateningly closer to his deadline, Jungkook presses enter to his final email.

Your email has been delivered.

And with this, Jungkook almost bursts out into tears of joy. These last two days have been hell for him and his fingers are numb from all the constant typing, but somehow, Jungkook did it. He accomplished the impossible task that his cold-hearted boss had set him and now the pride of his achievement settles into his guts. If Jungkook wasn't absolutely exhausted, he would give himself a pat on the back.

Jungkook tiredly gets up and lifts the box of files off his desk. He grunts at its weight and his lethargic body slightly sways as he attempts to carry it towards Mr Kim's desk. With heavy steps, he finally stops in front of the man before placing the box to the side of his desk.

Mr Kim looks up from his computer, his dark eyes slowly trailing over to the large box in Jungkook's hold.

"The task, sir," Jungkook breathes out, sounding rather aspirated. "I finished it."

A flash of surprise seems to cross over Mr Kim usually static expression. Jungkook would have been gleeful with the reaction but the utter exhaustion of overworking is now catching up to him, rendering him dizzy and impossibly sleepy.

Mr Kim is quick to replace his initial surprise with that condescending expression of his. "Oh, is that so?"

Jungkook merely nods. To him, Mr Kim's words sound mellow and drowned out, as if he was speaking from underwater.

The ravenette stands up and then makes his way towards the boy, keeping his eyes trained on the box. "Let's see how well you did, shall we?"

Taehyung knows that there is no way that Jungkook could have properly finished the task. Not even a highly experienced employee could finish a task like this in such a little amount of time, let alone some rookie who can barely formulate a proper sentence. Jungkook may have 'finished' the task but Taehyung is sure that the quality of the work would be appalling. And in true Kim fashion, Taehyung is going to look through all the files right in front of the boy. He believes that there's nothing better than face-to-face scrutiny from your boss. And plus, it's going to be quite entertaining to see the smaller boy quiver in fear.

Taehyung can already picture himself yelling and firing the boy for his shitty quality work and then the boy cowardly walking out and leaving Taehyung to be alone once and for all. This would be the first time something like this would happen but he's rather curious to see the boy's reaction because so far, the younger has been very persistent to keep the job.

Taehyung and Jungkook plop down on a red sofa that is placed in front of a small coffee table. Taehyung places the heavy box in front of them and starts explaining to the boy what he's going to do. "I will look through all the files and see if you have worked up to standard. I expect all the files to be- uhh, Mr Jeon?" Taehyung pauses his sentence and confusedly looks over at the boy that is now leaning on his shoulder. What the hell is he doing?

Taehyung pushes the boy back, opening his mouth to yell at him but pauses when he notices something. Is he... sleeping?

Taehyung doesn't know whether to burst out laughing or explode with anger. This kid really has the audacity to just fall asleep in front of his boss? How pathetic. But as Taehyung stares at the boy's sleeping features a bit longer, he notices the dark bruises of sleep deprivation resting under his eyes. They almost look as bad as his.

Taehyung decides to not dwell on it and lets go of the boy, opting to just yell at him for this once he's awake rather than attempting to wake him up now. The ravenette pushes the boy away from his shoulder with his hand but as soon as he lets go, Jungkook falls back onto him like a dead weight.

Taehyung frowns and squints his eyes. Is he...dead?

Taehyung brings his hand up to the younger's face and lightly flicks his nose to test his suspicions. This only causes Jungkook to scrunch up his nose and stir a bit but otherwise remain unbothered in his dreamland. The brunette just continues to slumber like there's no tomorrow and so Taehyung rolls his eyes and just lets his head fall back onto his chest.

At least he's not dead. He thinks. He can't imagine what the media would do if they get their hands on news like his secretary dying on his third day at work.

Although the weight of the boy's head on his chest is rather uncomfortable and foreign, Taehyung continues on with what he was initially planning on doing. He reaches over and grabs a few files from his desk, a smirk filtering onto his lips as he does so.

He just can't wait to see the load of shit that the newbie would have written on the reports.

Taehyung opens the first file and starts reading through it. His eyebrows furrow in concentration as he analyses the whole file. Upon reading the first file, Taehyung silently places it down on the coffee table and picks up another. He reads through this one as well and then furrows his eyebrows in confusion.

Taehyung picks up a few more files and reads through all of them, his eyes brows continuing to furrow deeper with each file he puts down. An hour or so seems to pass as Taehyung rakes through all the files, not a single word slipping past his lips. He reads the last files and then places it on top of all the others as he drifts into the thoughts running through his head.

He simply is at a loss for words. This has to be some sort of joke, some silly prank. Because there's no way... No way that some newbie like Jungkook could have produced such top quality documents in such little time.

Taehyung, being the CEO of one of the most influential businesses in the world, has had his fair share of document reading. In fact, he reads them every day. But documents like this, written so succinctly, with so much clarity in all the information, presented so professionally, these types of documents were rare. Only very few employees could manage to produce something like this. And somehow, Jungkook, the kid who could barely talk to him when they first met managed to do all this?

Taehyung isn't one to usually be impressed but right now, that's just what he is. He's impressed. And he must admit he seems to have misjudged the bunny looking boy. Jungkook is talented and clearly very skilled at what he does. He never would've thought that this awkward creature could ever manage a task like this but he stands corrected once again.

Taehyung leans back against the couch, almost forgetting that the smaller is leaning against his chest. He stares down at the mop of brown hair and chuckles lowly to himself. The boy is really knocked out.
