《Love on Top》Ch.15

Tonight I was going to have dinner with my family and Samuel. My mom insisted that I invite him for some reason, but I was kind of suspicious about why she wanted me to invite him in the first place. I'm still not on the best of terms with my mother, but she's still my mother.
I hear my doorbell ring and that causes Cristian to start barking. I smiled and shook my head before grabbing my purse and heading downstairs. I opened the door and in walked Samuel. He chuckled and petted Cristian before looking at me. Samuel wore a white button down, dress pants, and Italian leather shoes as well.
"Ready?" He asked.
"Mhm," I nodded. I said goodbye to Cristian then I left with Samuel. He opened the door for me and I got in. He closes the door then jogs to his side. He drives off from my house.
"Anything I should know about your mother?" He asked.
"You mean the Wicked Witch?" I queried. He chuckled.
"That's mean," He tells me.
"You haven't seen mean yet," I responded.
"Daphne, your mother cannot be that bad," He scoffed.
"Easy for you to say when you don't have her as a mother," I tell him.
"I'm sure your mother loves you," He replied.
"She does?" I asked.
"Daphne," He sighed.
"I'm sorry, but it's a little hard to be around her when she's constantly judging how I eat, breathe, and live," I explained.
"You are perfect just the way you are," He takes my hand and kisses it softly. I smiled a little.
"I wish she saw me the way that you do," I murmured. He looks at me for a split second and I looked at him.
When we arrived at the restaurant, I gave the maitre d'hôtel my mother's last name. He led us to their table with two menus in hand. I take Samuel's hand into mine as we walked through the restaurant. When we got to the table, my mother looked up.
"Daphne, so nice of you to join us," Mother tells me with a smile on her face.

"Hello, Mother," I plastered a smile on my face. You could feel the tension in the room. It was so thick that you could cut it with a chainsaw. Yes I said chainsaw. Don't judge me. Peter stands up and shakes Samuel's hand.
"Peter Chambray," He said.
"Nice to meet you, sir. I'm Samuel Zhāng," Sam greeted as they shook hands. Their hands went back at their sides and then we all sat down. Samuel sat right next to me.
"So, Samuel. How long have you known Daphne?" Mother asked with a smirk. I rolled my eyes when no one was looking. Really, Mother?
"Five months," Samuel answered confidently.
"Oh. Are you two in relationship?" Mother asked.
"I asked her to be girlfriend last week," Samuel smiled at me. He took my hand into his and gave it a light squeeze. I smiled back.
"Last week?" Mother asked. I can remember that day so perfectly. It still puts a smile onto my face whenever I think about it.
I was watching Meet the Browns with Sam since he's never seen it. We were at the part where Brenda and her kids went to the fair with Harry.
"You know. I've been thinking about something. Something really important," He tells me.
"Like what?" I asked.
"I have been thinking about me and you," He answered.
"Really?" I queried looking at the movie.
"Mhm," He nods.
"And what about me and you have you been thinking about?" I questioned.
"That maybe we could make it official between us," He murmured.
"Official?" I looked at him.
"Yes. Official," He said.
"Are you asking me to be your girlfriend?" I inquired in surprise.
"Yes I am," He starts to grin.
"Oh my God. Are you for real?" I asked. He chuckled with a smile.
"Yes, Daphne. For the love of God. Yes I am," He replied.
"Since you are asking then my answer is yes," I tell him.
"Good because I would've curled up into a ball and cried like a baby," He joked. I giggled.

"Golly. I'm so glad I said yes," I beamed.
"Golly? Who says that anymore?" He teased.
"People say that," I giggled.
"Yeah my grandmother does," He said. I rolled my eyes at him and shake my head at him.
"Who are you rolling your eyes at?" He starts tickling my sides and I start laughing. I tried moving away but he got closer to me.
"Samuel.....stop," I said between laughs. He stops then looks down at me. We both lean in and kiss each other on the lips. I smiled into kiss. We pulled away and smiled at each other.
"So I guess it's official now," He said.
"Yeah it is," I nodded. He leaned in to kiss me again.
"Daphne," Mother said snapping me out of my reverie.
"Hm?" I looked at her.
"You were zoning out for a moment. Is everything alright?" She asked.
"Yeah it's fine," I nodded.
"So, Samuel. What do you do for a living?" Chastity asked as she played with a knife that was in the table. I glared at Chasity who ignored me.
"I am the CEO of my father's company," He answered.
"Really? That must pay really well," Marcela said.
"It does," Samuel tells her.
"Samuel, what made you want to even talk to Daphne? I'm surprised she even has a boyfriend now considering how she wasn't very social during our childhood and she didn't have any friends at all," Sidney smirked.
"Yes. Daphne wasn't very social at all. Even in high school as in college. Even now," Mother said. I started to go red in the face at their words.
"Actually. I didn't go up to Daphne. She walked up to me," Samuel clarified.
"Hm......how pathetic. I really don't believe in women asking out men. It's embarrassing to me. Isn't that right, Daphne?" Sidney smugly said. I looked down at my hands which were now shaking.
"It's 2016, Sidney. Not 1812," Marcela spoke up.
"Samuel, I am sure you were embarrassed to even have a woman just come up and ask you on a date," Sidney tells him, "It probably emasculated you to know that a girl, like my sister, asked you out in public."
"Sidney, cool it," Regina hissed.
"What? I'm just saying. It is pathetic to think that a girl as anti-social and big as my sister asked a good looking man like him out on a date. I wouldn't do it because I'm a real woman with self-respect and dignity," Sidney explained, "Daphne, either you were just plain bold or just plain stupid. But I guess you were just plain stupid after all."
"Sidney," Regina snapped.
"Daphne, I have some advice for you. Watch your weight because they say that once a woman enters a relationship, she gains weight, but that isn't the case with you since you've already gained it," Sidney added finally.
"She's right," Mother agreed. That was the last straw for me. I felt my eyes start to sting with tears. I sniffed and held them back before standing up. I grabbed my bag and walked out of there. Samuel followed behind me out of the restaurant. I soon heard Marcela yell at them,
"You should be fucking ashamed of yourselves!" Once I was out of the doors, I walked outside and I started to cry. How could they be so cruel to me? How could they just embarrass me like that in front of Samuel especially?
"Daphne," Samuel walked over towards me. He pulls me into his arms without another word as I cried. He rubs my back soothingly as I cried.
"What have I done to deserve this?" I choked out between sobs.
"Nothing, Daphne. You haven't done anything all. What they said wasn't true. You are beautiful just the way you are. Don't listen to them," He calmly said. I continued to cry into his arms.
