《Male Lead's Villainess Stepmother》Chapter 27 - Welp! This Is Awkward!

Ever since they stepped foot into Sunshine House, the father and son pair walked quietly and unabashedly towards the table that Yan Shuyu was sitting.

Zhou Qinhe was much better at managing his emotions than his son; his look was what you’d call inscrutable and nobody could tell whether he was angry or happy. Even so, his majestic presence was still very intimidating.

If the little girl servers at Sunshine House didn’t know Zhou Qinhe’s identity and standing, they still might be able to treat him like a regular customer. Except that Yan Shuyu had educated all of them with a full lowdown on Boss Zhou’s background and status, so now the little girls definitely felt intimidated in front of him. This was why Zhou Qinhe’s slightly cold look intimidated Lin Lin, the server in charge of taking care of him, so much that she wouldn’t even dare breath too heavily in front of him, let alone interfere with what he was trying to do. All she could do was to follow weakly behind the father and son like a quail hatchling.

Seeing that Boss Zhou was about to greet Yan-jie, Lin Lin was a little happy about it. It wasn’t because she looked forward to watching any drama, but that as far as she and the other colleagues were concerned, Yan-jie’s ex-boyfriend, Boss Zhou, truly has some curious feelings toward her.

As much as Yan-jie had vowed to them that Boss Zhou did not have any special interest in her and her reasonings were sound, at the same time, Boss Zhou’s behaviors were there for all to see. Sunshine House had already been in existence for years now. Even before Yan-jie had joined them, it was already somewhat well-known on the internet. So why had they never had customers like Boss Zou all these years? And why was it that every since Yan-jie had started, Boss Zhou, who she was slightly associated with, has also suddenly became a regular patron?

Yan Shuyu seemed to strongly resent them putting the two of them together. Every time someone said something about the two of them, Yan Shuyu would explain in great detail why there was nothing between them. A few times later, even if Yan Shuyu wasn’t tired of that yet, her little buddies were worn down. Over time, they had all stopped putting the two of them together. But every time after Boss Zhou had visited, they’d gossip about that behind her back for a while.

Basically Lin Lin’s opinion was the same as everybody else’s. Even if Boss Zhou wasn’t head over heels crazy about Yan-jie, he wasn’t exactly behaving like your everyday suitor. But, for a CEO who had so many issues to take care of on a daily basis to come here once every 1-2 weeks and didn’t seem to be that crazy over the food and beverage of the shop, he’d always chat a little with Yan-jie. It was more likely than not he was here for Yan-jie.

She trusted that even CEOs didn’t run into women as pretty as Yan-jie every day of the year and everybody liked pretty things. He may not necessarily want her for himself, but he could at least come and admire her.

All in all, as much as the little buddies didn’t verbalize anything, they have already assumed Yan Shuyu and Zhou Qinhe were a “couple” in their mind. So when Lin Lin saw the not-so-happy Zhou Qinhe walking straight toward Yan Shuyu, she felt relieved. She figured since Boss Zhou was fond of Yan-jie, he would most likely be happier after he had chatted with her, so she wouldn’t have to worry anymore.

She quickly realized that she was being too overly optimistic. She didn’t know whether Boss Zhou felt better after he saw Yan-jie, but what she could tell was Yan-jie was asking for it. Boss Zhou could attract attention like a spotlight, and both his status and looks were no worse than the man sitting across from her.

Not to mention, his son was every bit as cute as their own “mascot” Yuanbao. The father and son duo would be the center of attention no matter where they went. Yet, somehow, they had walked straight toward Yan Shuyu’s table since they’ve come in, but Yan Shuyu was so focused on her conversation with the handsome man that she had never once looked in their direction.

Even though Lin Lin also felt that the newcomer big brother looked like a movie star, Boss Zhou was, after all, a regular patron of theirs. Throwing in the cute little boy, she was more on their side. Putting herself in Boss Zhou’s shoes, she’d be furious at Yan-jie’s heartlessness as well.

Thinking about that, Lin Lin no longer felt that the fact that Boss Zhou had been beelining toward Yan-jie since he came in was a good thing. She felt bad about it, yet, she was but a pitiful and powerless little server, what could she have done?

In order to avoid being dragged into the impending hurricane, Lin Lin made the decision to skeddadle out of there before anyone had noticed her. She did, however, pull through for Yan Shuyu when she threw down a “Yan-jie, he’s all yours” before she slipped away.

After she tossed her words, she dashed before she could see what Yan Shuyu’s reaction was.

Yan Shuyu was having a good time listening to the male god’s stories. When she was interrupted by her little buddy, she looked up, baffled. Only to find out that her little buddy was already long gone and Zhou Qinhe, whom she didn’t even know had come, was standing there in front of them.

That was too scary! Yan Shuyu was so shocked that she almost leaped out of the couch. In fact, she did exactly that. When she came to, she was already standing respectfully there to “greet” the boss. She was even babbling incoherently, “Boss, Boss…. Boss Zhou, how come you are here?”

Zhou Qinhe looked straight at her for a few seconds before he said nonchalantly, “Why? I can’t come?”

With such a scene, along with Boss Zhou’s look and the curious tone. That’d for sure make others feel that there were a lot of stories between these two.

For a brief second there, Yan Shuyu felt like she was a cheating spouse who was caught red-handed. She shook her head and rid herself of those crazy ideas. Struggling to save herself, she said, “Of course not. I am just a little surprised was all. Hasn’t Boss Zhou just visited a couple of days ago? I thought you won’t visit again for another week or two like you normally do.”

“Is that so?” Zhou Qinhe’s eyes flickered and finally he was no longer looking at her in a way that made her wonder if she had forgotten to put clothes on this morning when she left the house. His landmark smile had returned, but his tone was still a little sarcastic, “I didn’t know you’ve paid that much attention to me.”

Who paid that much attention to you? – was what Yan Shuyu really wanted to say, but as slow as she was, she did notice the unhappiness exuding from the boss man so she decided against challenging his bottom line.

Yes, Yan Shuyu attributed the boss’s unhappiness to her being too engaged in chatting with her newly acquired buddy and didn’t give him a big welcome. The boss man, who was used to being ooo’d and ahh’d everywhere he went, must have felt disrespected, which subsequently caused his unhappiness.

She didn’t understand why the appearance was so important to the boss man, but she knew to hammer the nail on its head. If all it took was for her to sacrifice a little of her image and that’d appease the boss man and for him to bring his son with him to the next booth, Yan Shuyu felt that it was well worth her effort. So not only did she not deny that, she flattered him even more, “You are Boss Zhou, not just anyone. Of course I’d pay more attention to you.”

As cooperative as she has, Zhou Qinhe had no intention to let her off the hook so easily. He continued to stand there, composed as usual. He gave Liu Ci a conservative look, then back at her. With a smile that’s not really a smile, he asked her, “You are not working today?”

“I am working today!” Yan Shuyu didn’t miss his obscure look. Knowing the reason behind the look, she quickly explained herself, “This is my son’s instructor.”

Meaning, she was chatting serious business with Instructor Liu, not slacking off at work.

Zhou Qinhe’s presence was so strong that Liu Ci picked up immediately that he was just a nobody in front of him. He also stood up courteously when Yan Shuyu saluted him reflexively. As Yan Shuyu was being inconspicuous in her speech and didn’t seem to want to introduce the two of them, it wouldn’t be appropriate for Liu Ci to chime in. He merely smiled very gentlemanly at Zhou Qinhe when he was being blatantly sized up.

Naturally, as an artist, Liu Ci’s demeanor was impeccable. But Zhou Qinhe’s was no less so. As someone who was born with the silver spoon, no matter how low key he tried to be usually, deep down inside he could still be very unconstrained in the way he behaved. When he was gentlemanly, he gave off the feeling of a spring breeze. Even when he was somewhat irrational in his behavior, he would still give off the feeling that everything was very matter-of-fact.

Take this moment as an example. Liu Ci felt that it’d be inappropriate for him to chime in their conversation without Yan Shuyu’s introduction as a middleman but that didn’t bother Zhou Qinhe at all. He casually and naturally reached his hand out, shook his hand, and said, “No wonder I felt that your demeanor was so impeccable, so you are a kindergarten teacher.”

Before Liu Ci could respond to that, Yan Shuyu was already facepalming. She quickly clarified, “That’s a misunderstanding, Boss Zhou. Liu Ci is an instructor at a music institution.”

Zhou Qinhe turned and gave her a look. He lifted his brows just perfectly and asked, “A music institution?”

Yan Shuyu, “…..:

At this point in time, her introduction was no longer necessary. Liu Ci naturally pulled out a business card, handed it over to Boss Zhou, and gave him an overview of their institution. Yan Shuyu couldn’t help but think to herself that Male God Liu might looked like a classy artist, but man, he sure was skillful when it came to recruiting for new clients.

However, from where she was standing, Liu Ci’s behavior wasn’t unacceptable, but the boss’s behavior was. He accepted the business card but didn’t give Liu Ci one in return. Instead, he smiled with his son standing next to him and said, “What a coincidence, Zhou Yi has been taking piano lessons as well.”

Having said that, he didn’t even allow Yan Shuyu a chance to interject. As though he was in his own home, he suggested most naturally, “Why don’t we sit down and chat a bit more?”

Liu Ci nodded.

Yan Shuyu: Who am I? Where am I? What am I doing?

If her memory served her correctly, Liu Ci was her son’s instructor, right? They were talking about serious business. What did the boss have to do with any of this? Wasn’t he here for afternoon tea with his son?

It didn’t matter. The development of the matters was already entirely out of her control. Yan Shuyu only remained stunned for a few seconds. By the time she recollected herself, the boss had already taken a seat with Male God Liu, and the two of them were happily chatting away. The boss was also conveniently sitting in the spot she was in earlier.

Even her seat was taken in the blink of an eye. Yan Shuyu, standing to one side, looked at the little male lead who also didn’t have a spot to sit at. A few more seconds later, Yan Shuyu decided to give up on the battle, “I am pretty much done talking with Instructor Liu and should go back to work. You two take your time.

After she had said that, Yan Shuyu borrowed a page from her little buddy and was about to turn and walk away before they responded to her. Yet she only made it all two steps before a soft, little hand grabbed hold of her. Yan Shuyu turned around and saw the little male lead looked at her with his cute, big eyes. He greeted her, “Aunty Yan.”

“Oh hi, kiddo.” It has been a while and the little male lead was still as cute as she remembered him. However, she had made up her mind to walk away so she chose to resist the temptation. She patted him on his head and said dismissively, “Go get a seat. I will bring you some yummy food in a little bit.”

“I’m not hungry,” said Zhou Yi as he shook his head. He continued to look at Yan Shuyu without blinking. With a bit of shyness in his eyes, he said to her, “I have been practicing ‘Little Dancing Frog’.”

Yan Shuyu was a bit baffled. She wanted to respond with a “oh, that’s very nice” reflexively but when she noticed the little anxiousness hidden behind his emotionless face, she suddenly understood what he was trying to say. “Would you like me to listen to you performing the song?”

Zhou Yi bit his lower lips, as though he was having some hesitation, but finally nodded and asked softly, “Would that be okay?”

This time, Yan Shuyu didn’t hesitate. She nodded immediately and said, “Of course. Here, follow me.”

As long as she didn’t have to stay anywhere close to the boss, she’d be happy to go anywhere else.

As such, Yan Shuyu walked over to the stage where the piano was located while holding the little male lead’s hand.

Ever since Yan Shuyu performed “Little Dancing Frog” at Sunshine House the very first time, children's songs had been popular at their shop for a little while. The passion, naturally, died down over time and the shop had returned to its usual romantic atmosphere.

Yan Shuyu hasn’t played this song for a few days herself as well. She was merely sitting to one said and cheering the kiddo on, but as she was watching him, she started itching to perform it herself so she reached out and started duoing with the little male lead.

This was the scene that Zhang Yuanjia saw when he returned with anticipation with Instructor Lin after they had retrieved the cello – he saw his mother enjoying herself with another child on her lap and completely forgetting that she has a real son. At that moment, little kiddo Zhang Yuanbao was shocked beyond words. He felt that this was the biggest shock in his life – his mother had another kiddo behind his back!

Zhang Yuanbao called out uncontrollably, “Mom?!”

Like son like mother. Yan Shuyu’s reaction was even more dramatic than that of Zhang Yuanbao. She immediately ditched the little male lead and stood up. With a very guilty look, she said, “Yuanbao, I see you are back…”

Naturally, Yan Shuyu would not have noticed at this moment that her reaction to her son catching her red handed was exactly the same as when she suddenly noticed that the boss was standing in front of her.

Zhou Qinhe, on the other hand, did notice that. So just when the mother and son were staring at each other in shock, not only did Zhou Qinhe not have any compassion for Yan Shuyu, he chuckled out loudly, making the scene all the more awkward.
