it was toms idea, to buy a house in long island. the two had just finished moving two weeks ago, them finally settling in. octavia was cooking pasta, tom setting the table. he came up behind his wife, his hands resting on her hips.
"hi tommy." she said softly, turning the burner off. tom kissed her neck softly, leaving butterfly kisses. tom hummed, feeling the vibration on her neck.
"hi baby." tom whispered against her neck. she took the pot off the stove and put the pasta through the strainer. his hands ran up and down her sides, octavia placing the pasta in a bowl before she turned around to face him.
"what do you want t?" octavia said, getting out of his grip to bring the pasta to the table. tom frowned, following octavia to the table like a puppy.
"what? i cant show my wife i love her." octavia turned to face him, leaving a soft, loving kiss on his lips.
"you're too much tom holland." he snickered, sitting down at the table with octavia. the two ate in silence, making small conversation. once they finished, tom washed and dried the dishes, him not seeing octavia leave the room. she was planning a surprise for him.
tom turned the water off, spinning on his heel to see octavia gone, like she disappeared into thin air.
"love? where are you?" tom called out, heading to the stairs. there was a piece of paper on the wall, pointing to the stairs. he smiled, heading up the stairs. there was another paper, pointing to their bedroom. he walked towards the closed door, him opening it.
the sun setting casted a glow on octavia's already glowing face. there was a balloon tied to their bed post, it saying congratulations on it. tom furrowed his eyebrows at the sight of octavia's eyes watering. he was confused though, a large smile on her face.
"honey, what's all of this for?" he asked, walking towards octavia. he bent down to her eye level, holding her hands.
"you know how we were talking about having a kid?" tom's eyes widened, him looking at his hands. octavia's smiles drops, thinking he's not happy.

he looks up, tears in his eyes. toms eyes trail down to her stomach. tom let go of octavia's hand and places the two on her stomach, the pad of his thumb rubbing against her stomach.
"we're having a baby?" his voice cracks slightly as he asked, octavia shaking her head yes as tears roll down their faces. he gets up immediately and he brings octavia into his arms. he holds her close and tight, their tears staining each others shirts. he let go of the hug, and left a long, loving kiss on tom's lips.
"i'm gonna be a dad." he said in disbelief, yet a smile on his face. octavia rested her forehead against his, them smiling.
"how long have you known?" tom asked, looking at octavia's watering eyes.
"two weeks." tom shook his head, octavia chuckling softly.
"gosh i love you." octavia said softly, toms hands cupping her face.
"i love you more."
•••
sebastain's birthday was three weeks after octavia told tom, and the couple knew exactly what to surprise him with. the two went to their first ultrasound, them having the photos with them.
when they reached octavia's childhood home, they saw sebastain open the front door, chris and anthony peaking over his shoulders. the two smiled, them getting out of the car. she engulfed her brother into a hug, holding him tight.
"happy birthday sebastain. how old are you now? fifty?" sebastain chuckled softly, shaking his head. it's been a while since she's seen her brother. he found a girlfriend, who octavia adores.
"i'm fourty two octavia, i'm not that old." octavia smiled, her hugging chris. he held her tight, him obviously not knowing about the little holland.
"not so tight evans." octavia whispered, chris letting her go in confusion.
"you'll find out later. it's a surprise." chris nodded suspiciously, him leaving a kiss on her head. she hugged mackie, the two smiling at each other. everyone walked in, her greeting her mother and father.
"hi mama." octavia said, hugging her mom. her mother smiled, hugging her tight.
"hi sweetheart." her dad came up behind her, tapping her shoulder.
"i guess you forget me." octavia spun on her heel, smiling at her father.

"how could i forgot about my dad?" the two laughed, them hugging. tom hugged and said hello to his in-laws, them growing closer every time they see eachother.
the siblings mom made lasagna and chicken, everyone digging in. octavia was extremely hungry lately, she assumed it was from the baby. sebastain noticed from across the table, a small smile on his face. he slightly kicked her from under the table, her looking up.
"i see your hungry." anthony snickered, octavia sending him a glare that made him go back to eating.
"i'm always hungry seb." the two laughed, joining the conversation chris, their parents and tom were having.
octavia and chris washed the dishes in the kitchen as everyone relaxed in the living room, giving them a bit of privacy.
"what's the surprise? is it for seb?" chris asked, octavia drying the pot. she looked at him, a smirk on her face.
"well i mean, it's kinda for everyone, but it'll mean a lot to sebastain." chris nodded, trying to figure it out.
"holy shit are you pregnant?" octavia turned on her heel, looking at him with a poker face.
"you'll find out with everyone else christopher." she then turned around, joining her husband in the living room.
they started presents, octavia and tom wanting to go last. confused, sebastain let them go last anyway. as they reached the last present, they realized there were no more on the table. tom nudged octavia, her getting up. pulling a envelope out of her hand.
"so this is just a preview, the actual thing will come in a kinda long time." chris's eyes widened, yet he kept his mouth shut. times like these she was grateful her brother was oblivious. he took the envelope, opening it slowly.
he pulled the photo out, him gasping. he dropped it, looking up to octavia with watery eyes. his mouth couldn't form words, air coming out. octavia chuckled, putting the words in his mouth.
"in nine months," she pointed to the three men. "you'll be uncle seb, uncle chris, uncle anthony." she pointed to her parents. "and you'll be nana and grandpa." everyone screamed, yet sebastain jumped up first and brought octavia into his arms, spinning her around. she smiled, tears in her eyes.
"surprise." she whispered in his ear, him chuckling softly.
"i'm so happy for you avi, so so happy. gosh i love you doll." octavia smiled as sebastian kissed her cheek. his hands went to her very tiny stomach, her being a month and a half in. he felt the bump, him smiling widely. he bent down, his face to her stomach.
"i'm so excited to meet you, gosh i love you already." sebastain said, octavia smiling. sebastain hugged her once more, the siblings smiling. chris then brought her into his arms, more carefully this time.
"i knew it," octavia laughed into his shoulder. "i'm so
damn happy for you avi. gosh i cant wait to spoil the little princess or rascal." octavia smiled, realizing that her and toms kid will have such a huge family that loves them so much. mackie then hugged her, his hands on her stomach.
"oh no another octavia or tom. oh my god what if they're twins?" anthony said, everyone's eyes widening.
"oh god twins?" she let out breathlessly. anthony smiled, hugging her again.
"congratulations octavia, i'm so happy."
she was then brought into her mothers arms as she was crying, octavia tearing up again. her father let a few tears slip, realizing his little girl wasn't so little anymore. as everyone finished hugging the couple, everyone sat back down on the couch, smiles etched on their faces.
"that was honestly the best surprise you've given me avi." sebastain said, octavia and tom laughing. anthony entered the conversation.
"hey, tom did most of the work though." chris slapped anthony's arm, octavia groaning.
"really mackie, infront of my parents?" the older adults laughed, shaking their heads.
"do the others know?" sebastain asked, tom shaking his head.
"downey's having his yearly get together next week in la so that's when we're gonna tell everyone. you don't know how hard it was to keep this from you guys." tom said, everyone laughing.
"damn, even after almost a decade you still can't keep your mouth shut."

Julia Waits
The melting ice caps have let something out: a sound. A sound loud enough to be heard across the Pacific. It's called Julia, and it may be history's greatest discovery, but some songs are better unheard. Curiousity begs to be sated, as the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration work to find the source of this unusual sound, the team they put together to explore the southern pole find themselves in a struggle for survival that pits them against time, against each other, and against something that defies definition.
8 203The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.

The Immortal God Emperor is dead...yet his Successor will one day arise. The worlds had long moved on from the greatest Cultivator of all time. The things that had been achieved and the advances made in the Immortal God Emperor's absence were nothing to turn one's nose up at. And yet, something was always missing. Because Cultivators, no matter the goals they pursue, always bow to the greater power. They seek it, they covet it for themselves, and they serve it with reverence. Shan Kai Lan was born into such a world. Born to two herb farmers whose cultivation did not surpass the Foundation Realm, yet who loved their son more than anything. Kai Lan was a child blessed by the Spiritual Plain, far more gifted and more intelligent than others his age. Yet the more profound his achievements, the greater the likelihood that his happy, peaceful life would be trampled on by those who desired his potential for themselves. The question of Kai Lan's journey becomes not whether he will reach the highest peak of cultivation, but what he will be forced to do to keep his young Clan, and the happiness it provides, at peace.
