《Just Revenge (#1)》The Two Rooms

"Aaron! Drive slowly. We can not afford to get into an accident right now", I yelled at him. I understand that driving normally would take us minimum an hour to get there and we have to reach as soon as possible. But, this is insane. He is driving at hundred and ten miles an hour.

"Mel, the police said-"

"I know what the police said. Mom and dad were inside the house when the fire started. They are rescuing them as we are about to reach. But, at the rate you are driving, we might get into an accident ourself. How will that be of any help to anyone?!" I asked him.

"We should have taken the chopper", Aaron said.

"There is no place to land the chopper near the house. Additionally, getting it ready would have taken time that we didn't have, you said it yourself." I reminded him.

"If something happens to them, what will I do?" Aaron asked breathlessly blinking back his tears.

I crossed my fingers. "Nothing will happen to them, okay? We will go there and make sure they are fine. In fact, you know, it might be a small fire. Maybe by the time we get there-" I stopped talking as Aaron took a turn into the lane and I caught a sight of the blazing flames from far. I gulped and held hand in fear. It wasn't not small. It was extremely huge. The area was filled with noises of sirens. There was a lot of commotion and people had come outside their houses to look at it. The fire almost looked uncontrollable.

Aaron parked on the other side of the road, a little far from the scene. We got out without wasting a second. There were policemen, ambulances and firemen all around. We hastily crossed the street and ran towards the house.

"Mr. Kingston!" one of the chiefs called us from afar. We halted and turned left to meet him midway.

"Mr. Kingston, your parents have been rescued successfully. They are being treated in that ambulance there. You can go see see them while we try to manage the fire." We were running towards the ambulance before he even completed his sentence.

We spotted mom and dad sitting inside an ambulance and ran to them. My eyes were blinding with tears. Tears of worry, joy, relief and fright.

"Mom. Dad. How are you? How did it happen? Are you okay? How much does it hurt? Did you let the nurse check everything? Is there any serious damage? Do you need any-" Aaron rambled on until mom cut him off.

"Aaron, Aaron, Aaron! We are fine. We have a few small rashes here and there and your father has a small burn on his right arm but, nothing serious at all. We are completely alright. Breath, son", Mom smiled at him and Aaron hugged her in return.

"Besides, do you think your mom would be so quite if she was in slightest pain?" dad said making us chuckle.

"Shut up, Josh. Amy, dear stop crying. We are fine", mom said and I ran to hug her.

"I..I didn't know what to do. I was so scared. I didn't want to..to lose either of you. Aaron was driving so f..fast, I..I had to calm him down too. I couldn't even cry. I am just so happy to see...see both of you okay...that I can't control my tears..tears anymore. I love both of you. I don't know what I would have done", I said between hiccups.

"Amy, we are alright. Aaron, get her some water", Dad said caressing my head.

Aaron got me a bottle of water and I took a few sips from it.

"Just by the way, this isn't fair. Both of you hugged your mother and no hugs for me?" dad pouted. We both rolled our eyes and hugged him.

"You both are definitely fine, right?" I asked once again.

"Yes", they said in unison allowing me to take a breath of relief.

"Aaron, call Kingston Hotel and reserve a room for us to stay for a few nights. Also, call Daniel and inform him about everything. Tell him not to rush back from Italy. Poor boy. He has been going back and forth for quite some time", dad shook his head.

"Hotel? Why hotel? You guys are staying with us until the house is repaired", I told them.

"What? No. We can't stay at your place. We were planning to fly to Tennessee anyways, after few days. We will prepone our vacation and stay there until the house is repaired", mom said and dad nodded.

"You will need a few days to prepare before leaving to Tennessee. You can stay with us until then, please", I insisted.

"We shouldn't, really", dad said.

"Mel, -" Aaron started but I cut him off.

"Why can't you stay with us?" I asked again.

"We don't want to bother both of you. Hotel is fine. It is just a few days", mom said.

"Exactly, it is only a few days. Please. It is no bother to us at all. In fact, we will be at peace if you are with us. I am sure Aaron will agree with me too", we all turned to look at Aaron expectantly.

"Umm..whatever Mel says", Aaron shrugged.

"See...." I told them.

"Fine but, only until Saturday. We fly to Tennessee on Saturday", mom said raising her eyebrows in question.

"Done!" I said excitedly.

"Mel, can I talk to you for a minute?" Aaron said pulling me to the side.

"I am booking a cab", Aaron removed his phone from his pocket. "You need to go home-"

"What? Why? I am not leaving." I cut him off.

"Will you let me finish talking?" Aaron asked rolling his eyes. I just bit my lip.

"You need to shift your stuff to the bedroom-"

"No. Why would I do that?"

"Let me complete, woman! Mom and dad are coming to live with us. They do not know about our...our situation", Aaron said getting a little frustrated.

"Oh", I bit my tongue. I didn't think of that.

"I was trying to stop you but, you didn't let me speak. Now, go home and shift some stuff. Like your clothes and everything else you need for these four days. Once you are done, lock that room and call Martha. She can clean the other room for mom and dad. You will have to shift by yourself. I need to stay here", Aaron said and I nodded.

I booked a cab and we walked back to mom and dad.

"I will have to leave. I will see you guys at home?" I told them.

Dad said, "Aaron, Amy, really. If it is a problem, we can just stay at-"

"No, it is okay. Mel just needs to get some work done at the office. It is urgent and since I can't leave right now, she is handling it for me", Aaron told him.

"Yeah. I'll meet you guys at home. You can come home once everything is sorted here", I shrugged nonchalantly. We turned out gaze to the fire. It was completely gone now. Thanks to the firemen. The whole house was black and no more had the welcoming feel it once held. It broke my heart to see it like that. It held some beautiful memories.

"Oh my! Never thought I'd see it like this", mom said sadly.

"We'll get it fixed just like how it was before. Don't worry.", Aaron told her with a small smile.

"The cab is here. I should go", I told them as my phone pinged.

They nodded and I started walking in the direction of the cab. Aaron came with me.

"Thanks, Mel", Aaron said to me.

"You do not have to thank me. They are as much my parents as much they are yours", I told him honestly.

"Not for that. For trying to keep me from getting into an accident. I tend to become harsh in my actions when it comes to people I care for", he told me with a small smile.

"Most of us do. Because when it comes to people we care for we think from our heart and not our head", I told him as I opened the door of the cab.

"Yes, because when our loved ones are in pain, we feel it too, right in our heart."

"Hmm. But, it is not always in our hands to deal with the reason behind it so all we can do is accept it", I told him.

"Yes, except when the reason behind it is some other person. Then, we want that person to feel it too", Aaron said staring into space.

"But, we forget that doing that will not lessen the pain we feel. It will just turn us into the person we hate", I told him with a small smile and he stared at me with his eyes widened like he was punched in his gut.

"What?" I asked when he continued to look at me like that.

Aaron opened his mouth to speak but, he was cut off by a policemen, "Excuse me, Mr. Kingston? Can I speak to you?"

"Yes, one second", Aaron told him and turned to look at me. "I'll see you at home."

I nodded and got inside the cab.

The driver drove me to our building. I got off and went to the penthouse. I had made a mental note of Aaron telling me to call Martha over. After I had come back from the hospital, Aaron had asked Martha to come home to take care of me for those two weeks. Later, after I started going to office, she kept coming here for about a month as Aaron insisted. She would clean the house and did so when none of us were home. So, she never doubted our relation.

Eventually, I had stopped calling her over. There was not much work in the house anyways. Between the two of us, we had managed everything. I'd cook every evening and Aaron would do the dishes in the morning. We did our own laundry and cleaned our own rooms. Aaron had told me not to go to his study so, he would clean that and I would clean the living room and kitchen area instead. The third room was locked since that night and none of us bothered opening it.

Until today. Now, since mom and dad will be staying in there, we need it cleaned. I went to my room and called Martha. She said she will be here in thirty minutes. By the time she arrived, I packed all the necessary items in a suitcase. I dragged the suitcase across the hall and stopped at the door of Aaron's bedroom.

It was supposed to be our bedroom. The one that we would have shared in an ideal situation. I had decorated every piece of this room by myself. The bed, the furniture, the curtains, the couch, the cushions and the photo frames. I stood there staring at the door for quite some time recalling the days Aaron and I had gone shopping for all of those. The fun we had and all those talks about how beautiful of marriage will be.

It made me sad to think that all of it was fake for him. He had just put up with me for his revenge. He might even have had everything changed in that room. Removed every memory of mine. I didn't know what to expect. After all, I hadn't stepped a foot in it since our wedding. The room might even look alien to me at this moment.

How could I have been this blind? Why didn't it struck to me even once? Yes, I may not have been as observant as him or Luke but, I wasn't dense.

I shook my head out of the thoughts and took a deep breath. I gulped and pushed the door open. But, it would be an understatement to say I was shocked to see the room.

It was still exactly how I had decorated it. The same bed with the lights hanging like vines behind the head board. The bedside table exactly where I had placed them. The right side, which was supposed to be mine, was completely empty and his side had a book on the table. The lamps were situated exactly where I had left them. The same curtains and the same couch. Heck, he hadn't even changed the position of the cushions on the couch. It was as if he remembered every detail of how I had wanted this room to be and has kept it like that. The only thing strikingly different was the photo frames. Gone. All of them were completely gone.

I kept my suitcase in a corner and sat down on the couch. I was numb and in a daze. I couldn't think straight. It is impossible for him to have planned this. He didn't even know I'd be here today. No one knew. It means he did remember every damn detail. But, why did he keep it like that? Why did he bother to even listen to me, let alone doing it correctly, if he hated me so much? Why did Aaron bother at all if it was just a plan for him? Why not replace all of it? I know that I would have. If I had hated anyone so much and wanted to avenge them so bad, I would have not kept even a single thing in my bedroom that would remind me of him.

Before, I could ponder about it any longer, the bell rang. I opened the door and as expected, it was Martha. I welcomed her inside and instructed her to clean the third room. We walked to that room and it hit me with a different set of memories. The worst ones.

As Martha opened the door and I walked inside, I recalled those three weeks. The three weeks that started with Ruby and ended at Jasmine. The times he got Ruby over. The night when Aaron shut the door on my face and walked in this room with Jasmine. The night Aaron pushed me to face the biggest trauma of my life. The night I almost drowned in the bathtub. The night Aaron pushed me to the brink of death and yet, saved me.

"Mrs. Kingston?" Martha shook me out of my thoughts.

"Sorry, I was lost in thoughts", I told her. Martha insists on calling me Mrs. Kingston. She is the only one why calls me that. But, deep down, I know that I'd never get used to Mrs. Kingston. I mean Aaron doesn't even consider me his wife in the first place.

"Mrs. Kingston, why don't you go rest for some time? I will clean this room until then", she told me again. I nodded and smiled looking around the room one last time.

As I walked out, I mentally laughed. Two rooms depicting two different Aarons. One room that shows that Aaron did actually care about me somewhere along the road. Other room that shows Aaron didn't care for me at all. Only god knows, what I should believe and what I must not.

I sat in the living room for the rest of the afternoon. I was surfing through the internet and watching random shows on the television. Martha was cleaning the room and I also kept checking if she needed help. After sometime, I just sat down and started reading a book.

"Mrs. Kingston, I found this in that room. Maybe it is yours or sir's", Martha handed me a small white bottle when i looked up from the book.

"Sleeping pills?" I asked surprised. Aaron doesn't have sleeping pills. Maybe it belongs to Jasmine or Ruby.

"No, I think someone might have left them there. Throw them in the trash", I told Martha handing them over to her.

I looked at the clock. It was already seven. I got up from the living room sofa and went to the kitchen to cook dinner for all.

Soon Martha left and I was almost done cooking, when the penthouse's door opened. Of course, it was mom, dad and Aaron.

"Hey, welcome home!" I smiled at them.

"Hey!" Mom smiled.

"Dinner is ready. You can settle in your room, right there and then, we can start", I told them taking the one small bag they had.

I guided them to the room.

"Oh! This is such a beautiful room!" Mom exclaimed as we entered their room.

If only she knew.

I looked around and realised that Aaron hadn't come in. Maybe he went to his room to freshen up. I began helping them settle everything.

"Let's go eat", I said once they were settled.

We went to the dining area and sat down to eat.

"Ah! It smells delicious and I bet it will taste even better", dad said as we sat down to eat.

"Amy, your cooking skills are just fabulous. Aaron is a lucky guy", mom said eating a bite.

"Yes, he is lucky indeed. He gets to eat such tasty dishes everyday now that Amy is here to cook", dad laughed.

"Dad..", Aaron warned and rolled his eyes.

"What? It is true", dad laughed.

"I totally agree, Josh. Aaron, son, we know that you are a perfectionist in everything you do but, when it comes to cooking...", mom laughed it off.

"I don't think Aaron's cooking skills are bad", I said with a frown. But, mom and dad turned their heads to me in shock. I was so confused.

"Yes, his cooking skills are not bad. They are just non-existent", mom laughed but, stopped after looking at my confused face.

"Oh my god! You don't know, do you?" mom stared at me open mouthed. She turned to look at Aaron, who looked slightly embarrassed, and said, "Bloody hell, Aaron. You never told her?"

"Told me what?" I asked confused.

"My dear Amy, looks like no one ever told you that your husband hasn't switched on a stove ever in his life. Aaron doesn't know how to cook", dad laughed.

"What?!" I almost yelled shocked. I really didn't know this.

"But..but, how is it possible? I mean that he has made waffles for me so many times and they always taste really good", I asked still in shock.

"Waffles, huh? So, that is why my son had suddenly decided to barge into my home one sunday afternoon and had demanded that I teach him how to make chocolate waffles. It was for you and here, I had thought my son wants to finally work on his cooking. I tell you, Amy, he didn't leave the house until he made it right. I had a trash bag full of burned and just not the perfect waffles. His words, not mine", mom told me still laughing.

"One full trash bag?" I asked as my jaw fell apart. I swear I can imagine it grazing the floor.

"Aaron never took interest in trying to cook. Diana, remember when we had asked him to start learning how to cook and he had acted like he had stomach ache so that he didn't have to learn?" dad asked and mom nodded laughing.

"Come on, everyone. This is not let-us-mock-Aaron's-cooking day, okay?" Aaron said blushing slightly.

"Yes, why today? We can do that any day, anytime and anywhere. It is not like he is ever going to improve", dad said making us all laugh and Aaron blushed harder.

Oh my god! Call me cruel but, I am loving this. Aaron Kingston doesn't know how to cook. Aaron Kingston is bad at something. That is news. I swear this just made my day!

"And someone was always at my back for not reading news", I sang grinning.

"There is no connection there at all", Aaron said still embarrassed.

"Mom, dad, wouldn't you agree that cooking is a more important life skill than reading news everyday?" I asked with my eyebrows raised in question and they nodded in unison. I just shrugged at Aaron.

"But, Amy, I am surprised you didn't know this. I mean I know you never lived together before getting married but, did you never ask Aaron to cook after your wedding?" dad asked with a frown.

"Uh...I never really thought of it", I said honestly. I just enjoy cooking so much that I never bothered to ask or think about Aaron cooking. Now that I think of it, I have never seen Aaron cook anything except those waffles. When I was ill, he asked Martha to cook and later, he always ordered food from outside. All along, I had just assumed that Aaron made me cook everyday as a means to torture me. It never occurred to me that there is a possibility that he doesn't know how to.

"And you, Aaron? Why did you never tell her?" mom asked.

"I told her to cook food for us everyday and she just did. She never questioned me so, I never told her", Aaron shrugged.

"Oh no, Amy. Never do that. It is one of the most important rules of a happy marriage. Never not question you husband. If you do that, your husband will get extremely full of himself. Always remeber to counter question everything he says", mom said in all seriousness.

"Even when your husband tells you that you look beautiful", dad said sarcastically.

"Yes, especially when he tells you that you look beautiful. That is always suspicious", mom said making me laugh.

Finally, Aaron changed the topic and soon we were done eating. We got up and sat in the living room for sometime. We talked about random stuff and their plans in Tennessee.

When it got late, we got up and left to our respective rooms. Of course, I went to the room that Aaron and I will have to share for a few days. We sat on the bed silently. Aaron was reading his book and I was playing a game on my phone.

"Why did you never tell me?" I asked him after a few minutes.
