《Gone》Chapter 34- Rules

It had been Logan that calmed him.
As soon as Virgil had begun to panic he had kicked and hit Roman until the other prince let him go. Once he was free from the other prince's grasp he had jumped away from him and begun pacing like mad as he grabbed at his hair and dug his nails into his scalp. He was hyperventilating and his eyes flew around the area, searching for danger. Magic was leaking from his hands, only seeming to worsen his panic as he failed to regain control of it, and watched it spread over the grassy field, his eyes blinking purple repeatedly.
Logan and Patton arrived five minutes later, all their stuff and the horses with them. They had just stared at the youngest prince for a moment, none of them knew how to go about helping Virgil. His magic wasn't allowing any of them to get too close and he was in too frantic of a state to get any information to them, they had no idea what had caused the attack or what he had seen in his vision. Roman was assuming the worst, assuming that Virgil had seen Janus or Remus die.
Eventually, though, Logan managed to get close enough to Virgil to attempt to calm him. He had to perform a difficult spell on himself to make himself immune to Virgil's magic. Seeing as he didn't know what spell Virgil was using, using a reversal spell probably wouldn't work. When he finally got to Virgil he helped to sit the boy down on the ground so he wasn't pacing anymore. He was slowly able to get Virgil to untangle his hands from his hair, followed by getting his breathing back in order, and eventually take control of his magic.
Nearly an hour later Virgil had been able to communicate what he had seen. And as awful as it was Roman was greatly relieved his brother wasn't dead like he had assumed and that this had happened nearly half a decade ago. Logan continued to speak to Virgil quietly, telling him he understood what it was like to lose a parent and he was sorry that Virgil had had to relive that day. He apologized for knocking him into the water and having distracted him.
Finally, Virgil had calmed enough for them to continue their journey. Virgil rode side by side with Logan for the rest of the day. Patton and Roman, deciding to give them some space, rode a few paces behind them. Logan was talking to Virgil about something. The younger boy wasn't really sure what they were talking about, but he was well aware that it was an effort to keep him distracted and he appreciated that. He hadn't had a panic attack this large in a while, definitely not in front of those he was traveling with. And he hadn't expected the others to be able to calm him from such a large attack, especially Logan.
Logan might be able to recognize when Virgil was getting anxious but Virgil really didn't expect him to be the type of person who was able to calm him so easily. He had already confessed and demonstrated he wasn't good with emotions or feelings. Yet already he had calmed Virgil from three attacks. The first when he was still in the Light Realm dungeon, the second when Virgil and Logan spoke about their pasts and funeral customs in their kingdoms, and the third was today. It was honestly surprising, Virgil didn't expect it of him.
He didn't expect any of them to be able to calm him from such a large attack. Honestly, he had thought about this before and he had figured that if he ever had such a large attack he would end up passing out from exhaustion before they were able to calm him. Especially since, with some of his larger attacks, even Janus struggled to calm him from them. So really, it was quite a surprise to him when the nerd had been the one that had calmed him from his attack and was continuing an attempt to keep him calm.

"-human body really is an amazing thing, capable of many extraordinary and unbelievable things. Did you know, that a human can sneeze faster than the fastest animal in the world can run? Unbelievable isn't it? And-" Logan stopped when he felt Virgil take his hand. He looked over at the other, who didn't seem to be phased at all by what he had done. Virgil's hand was shaking in Logan's grasp, but even when Logan hinted to him that they did not need to touch him if it was not wanted Virgil didn't pull away. After a moment Virgil motioned for him to continue, "right, Uhm, well... a human baby's body is a physical anomaly. Much like a bee's actually. At birth, a human baby's head is very malleable and accounts for over a quarter of their body weight..." Logan continued to speak and explain while Virgil watched the path in front of him, neither brought up the attack for the rest of the day.
The morning was cold and wet. It had rained sometime during the night and even though the four had stayed in a cave they had managed to find their clothes and blankets still felt damp from the water in the air.
A small fire had been lit this morning by Patton in hopes of slowly warming the place up and, now unattended, it had begun to die slightly. A dish of chopped vegetables lay nearby the flames, slowly heating up and preparing to become the groups' breakfast.
Roman and Patton were already awake, both of them snickering slightly as they stood over the last two sleeping boys. Somehow, in the middle of the night, the two boys had become a pile of sleeping limbs. Logan's arms were wrapped carefully and gently around Virgil (who even in his sleep looked slightly uncomfortable at being touched) and Virgil's head was hidden away in the crook of Logan's neck.
Eventually, the laughing became loud enough to wake the poor Dark Realm prince. He sleepily maneuvered to look at Roman and Patton, not yet aware of the wizard holding him like a teddy bear. Once seeing their giggling faces he turned back to look at Logan, immediately his pale skin went red as he began to try and find a way out of the hold, but ended up failing. His arms were pinned to his sides by Logan's hold, so it wasn't as if he could sign to Roman and Patton for help and neither seemed to be noticing that he wasn't okay with being hugged or cuddled.
Virgil gave up on trying to pass the message and instead tried to wake Logan. He sighed quietly as he lightly kicked at Logan until the other woke. Logan woke just as confused as Virgil did, groggily lifting his head and putting his glasses on as he looked over at Roman and Patton, who were still laughing. He then turned to look at Virgil, who gave the best wave he could, before Logan immediately jumped away from him. Roman and Patton laughed louder as Virgil rolled his eyes and straightened his clothes, which had become rumpled in his sleep.
"Virgil, I-I uh. Apologize, I do not know why I did that" Logan said, his face red with embarrassment
'It's fine. You were sleeping.' Virgil signed quickly, though Logan didn't miss how his hands shook slightly as signed to them, 'I'm gonna get some air, thanks for the hug though' Virgil smirked slightly as he grabbed his robes and shoes before heading towards the mouth of the cave.

Logan gave a small wave as he smiled with humiliation and watched the other walk away. Once Virgil was gone Patton went to go finish breakfast while Roman remained with Logan, continuing to laugh and tease his nerdy friend while Logan ignored him and packed his things.
What a great way to start the day.
"Ann!" Roman called as the younger boy ran ahead of him, "Ann hold up! Patton said to stay together!" The dark realm prince laughed as he slowed down to give Roman a chance at catching up before suddenly stopping in front what seemed to be an arbitrary tree.
They had made it to the outskirts of a town Virgil knew very well. His mother had grown up here, he had explained when the others had noticed his excitement. Yes, the place had bad memories but there were plenty more happy memories as well. In the morning they would make their way to his aunties house and spend the day there. Virgil had begged them to stay the day and, well, they couldn't find it in them to say no. Apparently, he had a surprise for them that he was excited to share.
Right now they were on a walk, Virgil had said he wanted to see if something from his childhood was still there and Patton had said he needed a buddy if he wanted to go. Logan was still acting awkward and strangely from this mornings events so, to preserve his chances, Roman had gone with him instead. And now, here they were. Running through the woods until Virgil stopped in front of a tree and stared up at it.
Roman eventually caught up, and Virgil looked back at him with a soft smile before taking Roman's hand and pulling at his sleeve slightly, he let go right after and began to scale the tree. "What are you doing?" Virgil didn't give any answer, just a motion for Roman to follow. With a reluctant sigh, he did as he was told and began climbing up the tree behind Virgil.
The tree was surprisingly tall, Roman began to get nervous about falling at ten or so feet. That was a height he knew was dangerous, enough to break a bone or cause serious injuries. But Virgil continued to climb, his thin frame making it easy to slip between branches and bundles of leaves and his hands and feet reaching out towards holds as though it was second nature. Roman was surprised by how fast Virgil moved up the tree, was there anything this boy couldn't do? Somehow Roman doubted it.
Eventually, Virgil stopped climbing. He raised his hand up as if trying to feel around for something before nodding in conformation and lifting himself up on what seemed to be an invisible shelf. Roman stared at Virgil, shock clearly evident on his face as he watched Virgil seemingly floating on nothing but air. Virgil rolled his eyes at him and reached a hand to help Roman onto the platform.
Roman was tense as he carefully let go of the tree branches and put his full weight onto this strange platform, fully expecting to fall and take a long and deadly plummet to the forest floor below. Next to him, Virgil smirked knowingly, already knowing exactly what Roman was thinking. Once Roman realized though, that he wasn't going to fall, he took a look around, taking note of the many floating items around them. Virgil looked around as well, and with a knowing smile, he snapped his fingers before the invisible platform was instantly replaced by a wooden floor. A fence like banister went around the perimeter of the platform, and in each corner, a pole went up to support a wooden covering.
Roman jumped at the sudden change, falling backward and towards the small opening that they had, apparently, come through before Virgil grabbed him by his collar and pulled him back up until he was sitting stable again. Again, Roman took a moment to look around. In one corner of the platform was a circle of pillows and blankets, supposedly to sit or rest on. Next to that and taking up most of the short length of the wall was a bookshelf filled with notebooks, spell books, sketchbooks, games, and more. A telescope pointed out and upward towards the skies, the constellation Pegasus would show up there once the sun set. In another corner was a large basket filled with non-perishable foods and drinks, some of which Roman had never even heard of before. A third corner housed a hammock, which held a small army of stuffed animals and toys like fake swords and baby dolls.
The last corner was covered in drawings, paintings, notes, and other tiny slips of papers or silly little crafts. Above that hung a sign with the words 'Coven of The Lunar Owl'. Below that, a series of names were carved into the wood in varying degrees of neatness. The names went as followed 'Lilly, Katherine, Ira, Isabel' Below those names were two more, the carvings obviously decades newer than the last four 'Janus, Virgil'. Roman's eyes narrowed slightly when he noticed the name Ira had been crudely crossed out. He, of course, recognized the name. It belonged to one of the most dangerous and evil witches that had ever lived. Why was it up here?
Virgil followed where his eyes had landed and frowned slightly before approaching the homemade sign. He carefully unclipped it from the chain that held it up before handing it to Roman. It was only than that he noticed there was more writing on the back of the slab of wood as well, he turned it over to read it and was surprised to find what looked to be a manifesto of sorts.
'When my mother, her sister, and friends were little they were jealous of the older witches who got to go to coven meetings,' Virgil began when Roman had looked up at him again, 'So they made their own coven and this was their secret hiding spot. When they got old enough to join a real coven, they were part of two and never gave up their first sisterhood.' Virgil sat down across from Roman 'But when they were our age Isabel and Ira started practicing the forbidden magics. They got in a fight with my mother and her sister about it since my family refuses to practice that magic.' Virgil paused again 'Isabel became corrupted, and died. My mother and aunt were sure it would make Ira see that black magic was an awful thing, but it didn't. She just got worse. My mother betrayed their second coven to join another. Just for their safety. They started fighting, and Ira left this coven. So my mother and aunt crossed out her name.' Virgil gave a small smile now, 'When I was eight or so my mother showed Jan and Me this place, and we joined the coven too, we couldn't join a real one because we're the princes and stuff'
Roman looked back down at the slab of wood in his hands and nodded before handing it back to Virgil who rose to put the sign back where it belonged, "So, your mom was friends with Ira?"
Virgil nodded with a sad smile as he turned back to Roman, 'But that's not why we're here' Virgil walked across the platform, sitting down next to the telescope and letting his legs hang over the platform.
"Oh," Roman said dumbly, then moved to sit next to him, "So, why are we here?"
'Whenever I visit my auntie Jan and I will climb up here and watch the sunset. We used to do it with my mother too but now it's just him and me'
"I'm sorry, I could leave, give you some space," Roman offered. Virgil shook his head and stared towards the sun, which was beginning to slowly make its descent.
'I don't mind watching with a friend' Virgil signed without looking away from the sun, 'I watched once with Remus and Remy'
Roman smiled at his brother's name, he still found it funny how jealous he was of his brother. He may not know Janus yet, but just the way Virgil spoke about the relationship their brothers had made Roman's heart swell with the good kind of jealousy. The kind that said, 'I'm so happy that you have that and I want that too'. His greatest wish was to have something like his brother seemed to have. Ever since he was little, that had been it. True love. Every birthday candle he blew out, every coin he threw in wells, every star that he had seen soar through the sky, every dandelion that had come apart when in his hands, every one of them carried his one wish to find his other half.
Virgil began signing again, some of the signs were ones that Roman recognized, others were unknown to him. But what he did know was enough to get the message across. He was talking about their brothers again, sharing stories of adventures they had gone on since meeting. Roman smiled as he watched Virgil's hands move, and though the sentences were being translated into his head he really wasn't paying attention.
He could honestly understand why Logan had developed a crush on the dark realm prince.
Virgil was curious, just like Logan was and apparently how Janus was as well. He was caring over all of them, putting everyone before himself. He was brave, and even when he got scared he still did what he had to do. He was responsible, even now he was responsible. Virgil didn't mind sharing that bit of childlike wonder he still held onto. He was fit and strong. Despite not being especially talented or gifted in magic he was still perfectly capable of protecting himself and others. Really, it was no surprise that someone had a crush on Virgil. No surprise at all. And seeing as Logan and Virgil had lots in common, he wouldn't be phased one bit if they got together. Virgil was quick thinking, he wasn't reckless or stupid. And he really wasn't that bad looking, in fact, he was even a little cute if Roman did say so himself. Virgil was-
Oh no
Logan met Roman and Remus when they were three or so. The king had invited Logan's uncle to a meeting some of the other Lords would be attending, along with several Dukes, and advisers to the kingdom. Logan had been invited as well and had then been taken to go spend time with the other children that had been dragged along. He immediately attracted the attention of the two princes when he took a children's book out from their pile of 'dragons treasure' and walked away from the game of pretend the princes had been playing like he hadn't just entered a dragon witch's cave, walked right by a very dangerous witch and two very handsome princes, and then pretty much made a death wish when he stole the dragons gold right from its favorite pile before walking down a river filled with man-eating fish as though he ruled over them like a mighty king of the sea. They had just stared at the little boy for a moment before approaching him, because let's be honest who wouldn't walk up to a boy like that? Logan had not even noticed them, just continued to squint at the words on the page and mumble them slowly and carefully. Roman had spoken first and ever since that day their friendship had been sealed.
Remus wasn't quite as close to Logan as Roman was. Remus confused Logan, whereas Roman intrigued him. And so, Logan dealt with the prince's ridiculousness and childish games of pretend, even tending to enjoy himself every once in a while. As they got older, their friendship grew stronger and soon Patton joined the trio as well. After the age of seven or so, intrigue was no longer the only thing holding their friendship together. Logan would often accompnay the twins on 'adventures', sometimes helping to get them out of trouble and sometimes doing the opposite and helping them get into it, not intentionally of course. It was a good friendship, one he had enjoyed. But despite them all being very close to each other, it had always been clear as day that Logan and Roman were and always would be best friends.
At age twelve they had made a set of rules.
Logan was spending another night at the castle with the twins. Patton and Remus were already asleep, sprawled out together on one of the beds. Roman and Logan drew and read by the light of a candle. Roman had asked a question, Logan had answered it. Roman had asked another question, Logan had answered it. And then Roman asked one last question that Logan didn't have an answer for; "Is there anything I could do that would make it so you're not my friend anymore? Cuz I don't wanna do anything that'll make you that mad."
