Sofie was brought up inside the Mountain pretty happily until her loving parents died when she was only twelve of some terrible sickness. After they were gone, it wasn't necessarily safe for her in the Mountain anymore. You see, Sofie was born on the day of the largest air scrubber malfunction in the ninety-seven years of being inside the Mountain which wasn't that big of a deal but a trace of radiation, not enough to kill or hurt anyone, crept in and affected him mother and consequently her. Her mother showed no trace of abnormality but, when Sofie was a baby, they saw that she had been altered by the radiation in the slightest way. Her blood was black. No one else in the Mountain could know, they'd think her a monstrosity, so the family successfully hid that secret. Until her parents died. A month or so later, the mourning cost her the secret. She was in the right frame of mind and was stupidly clumsy, cutting her finger in the middle of the crowded dining room. A woman saw her bleed and screamed in fear of being infected. The next morning, Sofie was kicked out from the Mountain because they were so afraid. They expected her to die and she did too but ... she didn't. The radiation didn't just change the color of her blood, it altered her to the point of being immune to radiation. She obviously survived being kicked out but she was also barely a teenager living alone in the woods. It was incredibly difficult to survive out there alone at that age. About two years later, she stumbled upon Lincoln and, after a while of sussing the other out, they started living together and he became like an older brother to her.
