In Polis, Cali was born into a very prestigious family that was full of Nightbloods. Her cousin, Lexa, and her younger brother, Leo, were both Nightbleeders and she was also one. Lexa and Cali were close in age by three years but, luckily, Cali wasn't old enough to fight in the Conclave.

While Lexa was brought up to lead, Cali was raised learning to become Lexa's Second once she became Commander and was always told that she wasn't as strong as her cousin. Despite all this, the two are best friends as Lexa would never purposely make her feel that way.

Cali rarely ever sees her parents or her brother anymore as she is always with Lexa.
