《Whatever》Chapter 12

Judging from the tears in her eyes, her mate is someone she did not expect. I opened the door wider and stepped aside to let her through. "Hey, hey K. Why don't you just head to the living room and have a cup of gran's tea." I said while rubbing her back too calm her down. She just nodded while putting a fist against her lips as if trying to prevent herself from crying. As we went in to the living room, gran quickly poured a cup of tea and gave it to Kya as soon as we sat down. After Kya took a sip of her tea, I asked, "So, how did you meet him?" Her eyes started to fill with tears but she just cleared her throat and started her tale.
"It was early in the morning. You know how much I love watching the sunrise every morning." I nodded and she continued, "Anyway, I just went into the woods when I started to smell an intoxicating scent. I followed it and I really wish I didn't." She said the last part in a whisper and continued, "I peeked from behind the tree and saw him. I can't believe he's my mate!" I asked in a quiet voice, "Who's your mate K?" Her eyes started to fill with tears again and she said with quavering lips and a shaky voice, "Ryder Hemmingway." My eyes rose up in shock.
Ryder Hemmingway was one my packs strongest warriors. He was a quiet yet popular guy and usually kept to himself but, he would always bully those who were weak. We were the best of friends before. Then I met Kya. I was 10 back then and was walking through the corridor when I saw Ryder with a small person who was backed into the corner of the wall. I quickly walked to where he was and heard him say cruel words to that person.
Turns out, it was Kya. He invited me to make fun of her with him but I defended her instead. My mom told me to never bully anyone and to defend those who were weak. He was shocked then he became furious saying how I was his bestfriend. I told him in a quiet and firm voice, "I don't make friends with bullies." His face became red and he stalked away with fury.
I lost a friend and gain a new one. That was the beginning of my friendship with Kya. I snapped out of my daydream when I heard, "He was with another girl! He was kissing her up against the tree and then he froze. His head started to turn around and I took that chance to get the hell out of there. I stayed in my room the whole morning then there was a knock at the door in the afternoon. I ran when I smelled his scent beyond that door and hid. Then I came back at night and just stayed in my room. And that's how I ended up in your gran's living room." I was deep in thought trying to figure out what to say when the doorbell rang. I stood up and went to answer the door when I was stopped with Kya grabbing my arm. "K? Let go. I have to go answer the door." She started shaking but hesitantly let go of arm. I gave her a confused look as I went to open the door.

Oh man. Seriously?
I plastered a smile on my face as I asked him, "How can I help you Ryder?" His face didn't show any emotion as he asked, "Where is she?" I was about to say I had no idea what he was talking about when, "Don't try and lie to me Jesse. I can smell her from here." I sighed and mindlinked to Kya, "I'm sorry K." I let him in and followed him to where gran and Kya was. Kya was standing in the corner with her face as pale as a ghost and she was shaking violently. She never recovered from Ryder's bullying. As Ryder walked closer to Kya, she just kept backing away from him until her back was against the wall. She flinched as she saw Ryder raise his hand. "She'll be coming with me now." Then he wrapped his hand around hers and Kya walked with him willingly out of the living room and out of the house.
"Well, that was anti-climatic." said gran while pouring herself more tea. "Don't worry love. This is a mate thing now. It's ironic that Kya found her mate on your birthday." I chuckled and said while trying not to feel guilty, "You don't have to tell me twice. Anyway, can you continue your story gran?" She nodded while getting comfy around her seat.
"Now, where was I?" she asked with her face scrunched up to remember. "You fell asleep." I told her while eating her chocolate chip cookies. She nodded then continued, "When I woke up, his scent was no longer outside my room but rather in my room. I was confused as to how that was possible. I went to stand up from where I slept and that was when I noticed that I was on my bed with an arm around my waist. That arm gave me sparks that I have never felt before in my life. So, I turned around and screamed when I saw who it was.
How did he get in? I wriggled from his grip as hard as I could but he just kept a tighter hold on me while rubbing his head on my neck. "Little mate," he mumbled, "You shouldn't have done that." And that was when I felt something poking my thigh.
I froze, my face red as a tomato. He mumbled, "Good girl." Then when his grip loosened a bit, I took that as my chance to run. But after I opened the door, I bumped into someone's back which made me fall to the floor while rubbing my forehead. I was busy rubbing my forehead while Falls went to close my door and lock it. "You do realize you're trespassing right?" I said while standing up, my hand still on my forehead. "How am I trespassing when you're my mate?" he said quietly. I shivered when he said that but ignored it. "How'd you get in here anyway? I locked the door." I asked while crossing my arms. He just shoved his hands in his pockets and nodded at my opened window. "You didn't lock it." Then he sat on my bed and patted the space beside him. I shook my head.

He rolled his eyes and said, "I don't bite you know. Well, I will when I mark you." I froze up and said hardly, "You can't mark me idiot. You're engaged." He looked at me then said quietly, "Engagements can be broken."
"Broken? You want to give up your engagement to a girl you obviously love, just to be with your mate who you couldn't even wait for?!" I asked with fury rising in my slowly. "I'm sorry I didn't wait for you." he said quietly. I replied harshly, "Sorry don't cut it you retard. I thought my mate would actually wait for me! More fool me huh? Guess I was just second best as always."
And with that said, I ran out the window and fell from my second floor room to the ground. I groaned with pain as I hit the ground but ignored it and ran the hell away from there. " Gran took the picture beside her that had a couple where the guy was hugging the girl from behind and they were giving each other adoring looks.
"I decided to go back home. Luckily, that was the last day at university so it was going to be the start of the holidays tomorrow. I didn't bring anything home with me that day because I would be coming back in a few days time as there was no one at home from me. I shifted then ran to the train station. My wallet was in my pocket so I at least had money. I went to where the train would stop and stood there for a few minutes until the train arrived. As soon as it arrived, I quickly got on and sat by myself.
Just as the train was starting to move, someone sat next to me which made me wince with pain in my heart.
"I just found you little mate. Do you really think I'll let you go that easily?" he whispered while holding my hand with his. I took my hand back as fast as lightning and wished the chair would just swallow me. "Let go then! See if I care! You obviously don't care about me Mr. Engaged." He sighed with a bit of annoyance then said, "You asked for it." He grabbed me by my waist and placed me on his lap while hugging me from behind.
I gasped with shock then shouted while whispering, "What the hell do you think you're doing? Let go Falls!" I tried to wriggle out of his grip but he just held on tighter. "I won't let you go. Not ever." he whispered to my ear. Then I just broke down and cried to myself. I cried for the lost of my parents, bestfriend and knowing that even my mate, the one who was suppose to protect me and take care of me, couldn't even be bothered to wait for me. "I'm never good enough. Not for anyone." I whispered to myself.
That was when Falls growled then made me straddle him and look at him in the eyes. "You don't have to be good enough for anyone. You're perfect to me."
A tear slid down gran's cheek as she said, "When he said that, I believed him. That was the start of our relationship." I sniffed and touched grandad's dog tags. "I wish I knew him gran." I said while trying to stiffle a sob. She nodded and just placed the picture back.
Granddad was the best thing that ever happened to gran. He was the one who insisted I have his name as my middle name. I cleared my throat and said while standing up, "I better go gran. Mom told me to come home to prepare for the party." She nodded and said, "I'll see you tonight Jesse."
I gave her a peck on her cheek and skated back home as soonas I was outside. "Jesse! How was gran? Is she okay?" I nodded while walking up to my mom and gave her a hug. "Good. Now you better go and get ready. You were at your gran's house for a long time. Your party is about to start so go get ready okay?" I nodded then ran insided the house and went up to my room.
As soon as I stepped in, I saw a figure sitting on my bed and I almost squel.
"Christian?"

Adagio of the Enlightened
The Elders will tell you the stories and lore. Of our ancestors, their deeds, and of the foes of yore. They will praise to you the chariot, and how it flew to the stars. How it stole the sun's light and slew the night’s roar. The Shamans will tell you the tales of their wisdom. Their wars on schism, and the unlettered world of ours before. Perhaps they will sing you the songs of what our clans' ancient customs tore. Poems of how our ancestors took what the discs had offered them, the manna and the mundane, and made it more. The kings will tell you of the follies, the sins, and the anecdotes of all our ancestors' wrongs. They will curse to you their names, the Ender of Fate and the Ruined Song. How they had dug up the hearts of the discs, euchred its relics, and blasphemed its prophecies, with oracles withdrawn. But they will only tell you the legends, recount the myths, and sing the allegories washed ashore. The Elders, the Shamans, and the kings can only retell what the storytellers of their own time had voiced. What they have read in books or heard in the minstrels' songs they adore. They don't know what really happened. They were never there. They can't tell you how our ancestors slew the angels from the sky, and sent them back to where they belonged. How they poisoned our minds, and made our people slothful and feeble, with the reforms they had undergone. But I can.I can tell you how the Ender of Fate severed destiny's strings, weakened them, and weaved them to our feeble flesh and souls.I can tell you how the Ruined song razed the heavens with her blood-stained melody, and reshaped our hell into utopia, with the deaths she deplored.Because I was there. I can tell you the truth, with my virtue strong. ----> Disclaimer: This will be a slow-burn, character-driven, non-harem, slice-of-life web novel with cultivation and kingdom-building elements. The Painter: A fantasy psych thriller and epic
*** June 21th Update ***- New chapters are being posted! I haven't figured out a schedule yet, but stay tuned!- Thank you to everyone who has read and reviewed, I'm happy to say The Painter is in the top 200 best-rated fictions. - Readers of The Painter have suggested reading through Chapter 6 before making a decision on this book.- The story takes place in the Lootverse, but you don't need a canonical understanding to appreciate the storyFinally, a warning or reader beware: This is not an action novel (despite the coming fight scene) but a slow-burn psychological thriller of sorts. For a time, the Painter's life was simple. He lived in the small town of Kinon (called Kinney by locals) with his wife, Kahriah and his son, Thesdon. The story begins with him alone and unable to travel more than a few hundred miles from his home. For 5 years he tried to chart his prison until one day a letter appears with a mysterious commission that will see him test his condition and his boundary. Set roughly 50 years before the impending end of days (from Loot canon), The Painter is a story about loss, grit, and exploration of a seemingly normal man in a world of magic and monsters. The Painter will follow the man on his adventure to restore his family, uncover his commissioners and discover the nature of his condition. Loot is the decentralized, global, community built fantasy world based on Dom Hoffman's art/tech experiment: Loot. Fun fact: The cover of our book is painted by the artist, who the MC is loosely based on and the same person painting the Banners (digitally) IRL for an art/worldbuilding project.
