《Whatever》Chapter 11

I was already awake by the time the sunlight shone through my curtains. I sat up from bed slowly and strectched. Saturday is finally here huh? I got off the bed and went to open my balcony door to look at the sunrise. The past few days, I didn't see Carter at all. I tried to find him but everytime I did, he would turn the other direction.
Guess I have cooties.
"Happy birthday to me." I said sarcastically. Then I said softly, "May you rest in peace granddad. We all miss you so much." The sky changed colour from yellow to orange then the sky was blue.
"Jesse! Time to wake up! We have a big day ahead of us!" my mom shouted from outside my door. I sighed. I'll do anything to just get through this day.
Lets get this over with.
I quickly padded across my room and went to my bathroom to take a shower. After a few minutes, I came out and went to my closet and picked out my undergarments, a black tank top, a pair of teal skinny jeans, my converse and my beanie. After that, I picked up a necklace that belonged to granddad before he died.
Gran gave it to me when I was 10 and I always use it on this day. I think it's time I use it all the time. Granddad was in the navy before he decided to become warrior for the pack. He couldn't take it being far away from gran and mom. Ever since he got them, he always wore them and gran told me he wanted to give it to his first grandchild when he or she was old enough to receive it.
Gran remembered and gave it to me.
I place it around my neck and quickly went out of my room to go to the kitchen. As soon as I reached the kitchen, I said to them quickly, "Don't greet me happy birthday until the celebration later alright?" Mom closed her mouth that was opened. She was going to greet me. I just knew it.
Dad was there and was staring at me while drinking his coffee. Then he nodded. I sighed with relief and took my seat at the table. "Here you are Jess." mom said while placing a stack of chocolate chip pancakes with a glass of water infront of me and kissed my head.

After eating, I grabbed my skateboard and went to visit gran. I always spend my birthday morning with her and she would always share stories of grandad. After 15 minutes, I arrived at her house. I got off my board, stepped on the edged and picked it up.
I knocked on the door and then Gran's smiling face appeared. Her auburn hair was up to her neck and her face had wrinkles that held wisdom. Gran told me that and I don't know if that was a joke or if she was being serious.
"Jesse! Happy birthday love." She quickly let me in and we went straight to the living room. I sat on the floor cushion because that was my seat. Gran sat in her arm chair that is the same shade of colour from the first Nanny McPhee movie. You know the one where there was a frog in the teapot or the wormy sandwiches?
I looked to my right at the blue armchair with a table beside it that had a picture of a young couple. I crawled over and picked it up. "Tell me the story again gran. Of how you and granddad met." She smiled sadly and started to tell me, "I was just 20 years old back then. Still in university, finishing my third year. That year, a whole lot of things went wrong. My parents died from a hunter attack, my bestfriend betrayed me because her mate told her too and I was left all alone with my parents inheritance to continue my education." Gran paused for a few seconds then continued.
"A few weeks passed and it was autumn. I was in the library doing some last minute coursework when I smelt an intoxicating scent. I decided to follow it. After what seemed like hours, the scent was stronger as I came near a corner. I was about to walk pass that corner when I heard a laugh. A girl's laugh. Followed by that laugh was a guy talking to her. I didn't hear anything so I decided to peep through the top of the books to see what was going on. I saw a boy and a girl being in love. When I focused on the boy, I knew he was my mate. But then, "Our wedding is just a few weeks away! I can't wait till then!" the girl said while whispering excitingly. My heart broke before it even started to love my mate even more."

Gran's eyes were filled with sadness as she remembered that day. She continued, "A lot of stuff ran through my mind. Why are they getting married? Why are they engaged? Could she somehow be his mate? And if so, what was I? My eyes were filled with tears and then I wiped my tears away. I refuse to be sad over my mate. I took one last look at my mate and noticed he was sniffing and then, he looked straight at where my eyes were. He then said while growling, "Mine." I jumped back with a start. I quickly decided it was time I disappear so I ran as fast as I could, with the scent of my mate coming close behind."
I leaned in closer as the story was getting good. She continued, "I ran to where my bag was and was about to pick it up when I felt someone grab my waist and pinned me against the wall. I felt sparks throughout my body from where he held me and was weak at the knees. If he wasn't holding me, I would have fallen to the floor. I ignored those sparks and struggled against him but it didn't work. "Mate." he whispered in my ear while sniffing my neck. I was frozen stiff. I didn't know what to do so I just stood there until, "Falls! What do you think you're doing?" It was that girl again. Falls turned his head and looked at her. "Get off her Falls! I'm your mate. Remember?" she says while showing him her left ring finger with a furious face. A tear fell from my eye as I felt him loosening his hold of me. I gripped his arm tightly which made him looked back at me. I looked deep in his blue eyes. I couldn't forgive myself knowing he had no choice but to pick her over me.
Why would he pick me?
I'm just Mary. Plain and simple. I pushed him off me and ran away from him. I had to get away. Far away. I ran and ran until I reached my dorm room and slammed the door shut. I didn't share a room with anyone for the last 3 years and so it was easy for me to focus on my studies. I was about to go sit on my bed when,
Knock! Knock!
I froze. Shit. I can smell him from beyond this door. Maybe if I just stay quiet he'll go away. "Mate?" he whispered quietly. "Will you open the door for me? Please?" I shook my head while putting a fist against my lips. I quietly went to sit on the floor near my bed and placed my bag on my bed.
He jiggled the doorknob. "Little mate? Open this door." he said with authority. I ignored him and just stayed like that while trying to calm my heart. But I knew only Falls would be able to do that. I took out the book I was currently reading and read through it. After what seemed like hours, I fell asleep."
I smiled as I remembered the next part of gran's story. She was about to continue when,
Knock! Knock!
I got up from my seat and told her, "I'll get it gran." I went to the door and opened it seeing a dissheveled Kya on my gran's doorstep.
"Hey K. What's wrong?" I asked while stepping aside from the door. She told me with tears in her eyes as we were inside,
"I found my mate."

CW: Contains mildly graphic scenes of violence/death, topics of unwanted pregnancy/abortion, scientific experimentation on sapient beings, depression/suicide, grief, and trauma. The tone of this fiction is often dark and distinctly dystopian in lighter shades of Margaret Atwood, though where there is darkness there is always hope and light. On Hiatus Until September When the School Year Begins and Mom This story takes a considerable amount of time and mental energy to complete. I thought I had enough backlog and time to post it as a serial while COVID kept my child home from school, but it turns out while I can quickly write other pieces, I cannot produce the quality I need with this one at an acceptable rate. We'll resume in September when my days are much freer. Thank you for your patience and stay tuned for a different storytelling romp more suited for a serial platform in the meantime.
