《Hold You In My Arms (Stevens book 9)》Chapter 23

When they arrived at their box, they found Fiona's Aunt Norah and Uncle Caleb already there with Mason and Cassie's daughters, Poppy and Aggie. Aunt Lizzy's husband, Brian Alexander was also there. Fiona and Henry took their seats along with Wyatt and Beth, and Fiona's parent's, Quinn and Dana. The others all moved to the box next to them which only offered a low wall as a separation.
"How is motherhood treating you?" Caleb asked Beth with a grin as he kissed her cheek. Beth and Wyatt's little girl Mary had been born at the beginning of March and was only a few months old.
"It's lovely, thank you," Beth responded with a glowing smile as she kissed Caleb's cheek. The secret of Beth and Wyatt's marriage had been revealed shortly after their visit, and they had had a second marriage ceremony the previous July at Wyatt's family home outside of Charleston. Shortly after the wedding they announced that Beth was pregnant.
"Where is the baby?" Dana asked as she settled in a seat next to her daughter while Henry and Quinn sat behind them. It wasn't ideal for Fiona, who wanted Henry where she could see him.
"Mary is with Sunny along with Finn and Lily's daughters. Eli is performing tonight, and you know how she hates to come to these things, so she offered to keep the kids." Elias Emory was a famous rockstar and an old friend of the family, and Sunny was his wife. Eli had been the one to take and unknown Lily and turn her into a star.
Beth turned to Fiona. "Speaking of Eli and Sunny, we're going to their island tomorrow for a few weeks. Poppy, Aggie, and Mave are coming too. You and Henry should join us!"
Beth leaned across the small wall and tapped Alistair on the shoulder. "Are you free the next few weeks? If you came, it could be a cousin's weekend. We haven't had one of those in eons." The excitement on Beth's face was hard to say no to.
"I promised Mom and Dad I would help at the ranch," Fiona explained.
"Oh, a few weeks more won't matter. You and Henry should go." Dana smiled. "Are you free, Henry, or do you have to return to base soon?"
"I love the idea of all of us together again! You should come to Katherine!" Beth insisted.
Katherine's eyes grew wide at the suggestion as she looked at all the others whose attention had turned to her.
The lights thankfully dimmed, which kept them from having to answer.
"We can talk more at the after-party!" Beth insisted as the overture began."
Fiona had to admit that a few weeks spent on a secluded barrier island off the coast of Georiga with Henry might not be a bad idea. Granted, all of the cousins would be there, but it was a big enough place to evade them if they wanted. She really wanted to look over her shoulder and get a read on what Henry thought about the idea. He hadn't answered her mother's question about if he was free or not.

The first act of the show was delightful. It was a mix of different artists that included Eli and was primarily dedicated to modern music with a toe-tapping beat. When intermission hit, the majority of the family stayed put, and thankfully, Beth didn't bring up the island again.
Fiona was desperate to talk to Henry, but he was deep in conversation with her father and then Caleb, and it was impossible to suggest they leave without being rude, so she sat in her chair and worried the strap of her purse with her fingers.
The lights dimmed once more, and the music was simple. It was only the piano played by Eli with Cassie on center stage spotlighted as her voice soared. When she launched into the song 'At Last', the entire Stevens family had a tear in their eye. It had been Elizabeth and Doug, her grandparents' song. After Cassie's solo, Lily joined her, and she and Cassie took turns doing ballads and duets while occasionally joined by Eli.
When it was all over, there was a standing ovation.
The afterparty was on the roof of the theater after the performance. Everyone left at their own pace, and Fiona hung back in the box, hoping Henry would do the same, and he did.
Fiona stayed in her seat, facing forward, suddenly shy. When Henry's hand landed on hers to stop her from playing with her purse strap, she jumped.
"You're going to break it," his voice was gentle as he sat in the chair Fiona's mother had vacated.
Fiona turned and looked him over. "Are you safe? You weren't hurt while you were away, were you?" she asked.
"No, I'm fine." Henry rested his elbows on his knees.
"I love you, Henry," Fiona said as she met his eyes.
"I love you, Fiona," Henry reassured her while squeezing her hand.
"No, I mean I love you and not the idea of you." Fiona wanted to be very clear and make sure he understood.
Henry let out a deep breath. "I'm glad."
"But you're still not sure, are you?" Fiona felt tears start to form.
"No, I'm sure."
"I hear a but in there," Fiona grabbed his hand in desperation. It felt like she was losing him when she had only just found him.
"I had a lot of time to think on this last trip, and I realized I need time to work through a few issues. The fact that I let you make me feel like I was unworthy was all on me, and I made you feel like it was you. It's something about myself that I've never really handled. I carry a lot of baggage, and I want to offload some of it before..."Henry looked away as his cheeks turned red.

"Before what, Henry?" Fiona rested her hand on his as she held her breath.
"Before I ask you to marry me." He cleared his throat nervously.
Fiona felt giddy at his words.
"I need to learn how to let someone as wonderful and beautiful as you are, love me. Otherwise, I will destroy us with all of my doubts." He pushed a strand of her hair off of her cheek. "You've given me so much time to catch you. Can you give me a little bit more?"
"I can give you as much time as you need. It might be a chance for me to work through a few issues of my own." Fiona nodded. He had said he wanted her, and she could wait forever. "Can you come to the island?"
Henry shook his head. "No, I have to be back tomorrow."
"Come on, Finry! Let's go party!" Mave called from the floor of the auditorium.
"I can't stay. I have a flight to catch. I only came to see you." Henry stood and held out his hand.
Fiona stood and looked up at him. "Can I at least have a kiss?" she asked as she let her gaze drop to his lips.
Henry's old easy-going grin returned. "I can handle that!" he agreed as she pulled her close. "Don't forget me."
"Never," Fiona shook her head as his lips claimed hers in a slow, bone-melting kiss.
Davis had joined Mave below with his camera, and he caught a picture that would go on the family wall of fame, but neither Henry nor Fiona noticed.
Fiona walked with him to a waiting taxi and kissed him once more before he drove away.
She knew they both had a lot to work through, but in the end, they would be together. Slowly, she made her way up to the roof, where the party was going strong.
"Where's Henry?" Mave asked as she handed her a glass of champagne.
"He had to go," Fiona's voice was strong, and her eyes dry.
Mave looked at her for a second, then immediately changed the subject.
"Did you really date that jerk?" Mave asked as she looked over at Clayton, who attempted to joke with one of the singers for the evening's performance.
"Yes," Fiona sighed, taking a long sip of her champagne.
"Why is he here?" Alistair said as he joined the two women while watching Clayton.
"My guess is it's because his father is a senator." Fiona took another sip of champagne then switched the glass out for another one. It was going to be a long night.
"What about this cousin get-together?" Mave asked them both.
Fiona shrugged. "I'm game." It would be nice to get away from it all, and it might be a good first step to reconnecting with her family. She and Mave looked over at Alistair with expectant expressions, and he threw up his hands.
"Fine," he agreed with a smile.
Mave and Fiona exchanged a glance as he wandered off. They were both thinking the same thing. That he agreed because there was a good chance that Katherine was going to be there.
Fiona and Mave separated, and Fiona wandered over to Aunt Cassie and Lily, giving them kisses and hugs. If they were shocked by her sudden show of affection, they hid it well.
They talked for a while before she wandered to the edge of the roof, looking down at the traffic below as she thought about Henry. When she felt a presence at her shoulder, she looked up, expecting it to be a family member, but it wasn't. It was Clayton.
"So, how long have you been running with this crowd?" he asked, halfway to being drunk.
Fiona tilted her head, wondering what she had ever seen in him. On top of being conceited, he was completely unaware.
"You mean how long have I known Cassie and Mason Stevens, Davis and Laura Stevens, and Rainer and Alice Stevens?" Fiona asked with disbelief. The name Stevens should say it all, but then maybe he had forgotten her last name.
"Yes, and Lily and Finn Baxter and Elias, freaking, Emory!" Clayton exclaimed.
Fiona shook her head. "It would take too long to explain."
"Fiona!" Eli greeted with a hug as he joined them. "It's been too long! Are you coming to the island with us tomorrow?" Elis smiled at Clayton in a vague way.
"Yes, so are Alistair and Katherine." Fiona nodded.
"Katherine?" Eli frowned as he tried to recall the name.
"A friend of the family. I think there are hopes for her and Alistair, but no one is talking about it," Fiona explained.
"That's because we're all talking about team Finry, right now." He kissed her cheek. "We'll catch up later this week," he insisted before he wandered away.
"Freaking Elias Emory!" Clayton shook his head. "How did I not know you knew these people."
"Because you were only ever interested in yourself, Clayton," Fiona said as she wandered away.
She was going to focus on her family tonight. There was time to think about the rest tomorrow.
