《Hold You In My Arms (Stevens book 9)》Chapter 18

Fiona was putting the food that she and Henry hadn't eaten in the fridge when Bebe and Lenora entered the apartment. They were laughing about something and stopped short when they saw her.

"Why are you here?" Bebe wailed. She had a few too many, by the sound of it.

"I live here?" Fiona questioned.

"Noooooooo!" she fell onto the couch. "You're supposed to be with the hot piece of eye candy you left the bar with!" Bebe was acting as if her whole world had crashed down around her.

"A friend of his needed help, so he had to leave," Fiona explained, trying to keep it as simple as possible.

"He helps friends!" Bebe cried again. "He's perfect. Will he be my friend?"

Fiona smiled. "I'm sure he will."

Bebe lifted her hand to her chest and hiccuped. "You would share him with me," she asked in a hushed whisper.

"As a friend, sure, but otherwise, he's all mine." Fiona eyed Bebe, who looked as if she was about to pass out.

"Would you help me get her to bed?" Lenora asked as she tried to pull Bebe to her feet. When she wouldn't budge, Fiona grabbed her other hand, and on the count of three, they both pulled her to her feet.

"You guys are the best!" Bebe said, giving Lenora a big sloppy kiss on the cheek. Bebe was a loving drunk.

They somehow managed to get her to bed and get her shoes off of her feet before she started snoring. When that happened, Fiona and Lenora slowly backed away from the sleeping girl without waking her. Experience had taught them both that if Bebe woke suddenly while drunk, she would vomit all over them. They sighed in relief when the door closed behind them.

"What did happen with your handsome friend?" Lenora asked as she moved across the hall to her room.

"Just what I said. A friend showed up, and he had to help." Fiona shrugged.

"If you say so, but the way you two were looking at each other at the bar, I was sure we wouldn't see you for a few days at least." Lenora grinned. "Some girls have all the luck."

"This time, it wasn't me," Fiona sighed as she opened her bedroom door.

"Maybe next time. Goodnight," Lenora softly called across the hallway as she closed her door behind her.

Fiona did the same and closed her door behind her as she turned on her light. Henry was a good man, and she knew he had done what he felt he needed to do, but she wished that Dixie hadn't shown up. She must have been following Henry the entire time, which was creepy, but understandable on a certain level because she wanted to follow Henry too.

Fiona's thoughts darted to his admission of love, and she smiled at her reflection as she removed her jewelry and let her hair down. Maybe that admission meant that one day she would have the right to follow him all the way across the country if needed.

They had a lot to talk about, and she hoped they could meet again very soon.

Fiona was lost in a daydream of precisely what that meeting would be like when she heard a light tapping at her window. The noise made her jump, and she spun around to see a head just above the bottom of the window sill. She had opened her mouth to scream when she recognized Henry's eyes watching her.

Fiona raced to the window and opened it, kneeling to his level. "What are you doing tapping at my window, and how did you know it was my window?"

"Shhh, keep it down!" Henry hushed her. "I know it was your window because none of you close your window blinds. You're lucky you don't have more men knocking at your windows."

"I'm sorry! I was distracted. Normally, I do close my blinds. What are you doing here?" she asked again.

"I couldn't walk away from that kiss. I had to see you. I've waited a year to see you." Henry's eyes looked over her face lovingly, and she wanted to sigh.

"I'll meet you at the front door and let you in." Fiona moved to stand, and he grabbed her hand, stopping her.

"No, I don't want to risk being seen, plus this is much more romantic. I never got to sneak into a girl's room before." Henry grinned at the thought.

"I'm not a girl, and who could possibly see?" Fiona looked around behind Henry. Fiona's window was on the side of the house behind a bush, and the air condenser was between him and the street, which was why he was staying low.

"Dixie." Henry frowned. "I left her at home and asked Boston to keep an eye on her for me. He's supposed to text me if she leaves. She left her car outside the café to get a ride home with me, so getting back here won't be easy."

"But how would she know where I live?" Fiona asked with a shake of her head.

"I have no clue, but the woman is like a bloodhound." Henry paused, looking a Fiona. "May I come in?' he asked.

"Yes!" Fiona said, taking a step back. Henry leaned forward, lifting his foot and placing it in her room, but when he went to lift his other foot, it was stuck. Fiona didn't know what was going on, so she tried to pull him to help.

"Stop, my foot is stuck in the branches of the bush!" he hissed.

Fiona attempted to lean out and see the problem. "I think I can help," she hissed as she leaned out the window. This left Henry halfway in and Fiona halfway out of the window.

Suddenly, the window in the house next door opened, and her neighbor, Mrs. Hallaway, stuck her head out to see what all the noise was about. She was seventy plus, and her hair was in curlers.

"What's going on?" she asked as she took in the situation.

"Hello, Mrs. Hallaway. This is my friend Henry, and he's stuck," Fiona introduce and explained.

"I can see that," she said, leaning out her window. "Why is Henry sneaking in your window? You're both grown adults."

"I was trying to be romantic, Mrs. Hallaway." Henry winced as Fiona wiggled his ankle to try and free it.

"Ohh, how sweet!" Mrs. Hallaway looked over her shoulder. "Did you hear that, Floyd! Why don't you ever sneak in our windows to romance me?"

Floyd's response went unheard as Mrs. Hallaway turned her attention back to the young couple. "Twist his ankle a little to the left," she suggested.

Fiona did as she suggested with little result.

"Here, try this!" Mrs. Hallway suggested, handing them a crowbar.

Henry and Fiona paused as they looked at the sweet old lady in a new light.

"What? It's as good a weapon as any!" she defended her choice.

"Yes, it is, Mrs. Hallaway, and I commend you on being prepared," Henry grinned at her, and Fiona watched her melt a little.

Fiona grabbed the crowbar and got to work while Henry and Mrs. Hallaway had a friendly discussion about self-defense.

The widow beside Fiona popped open, and Bebe stuck her head out.

"Henry!" she cried. "Fiona, look, it's Henry. He came back. I love you, Henry! Fiona promised me you would be my friend, and that she would share you!"

All hope of keeping Henry hidden was long gone.

"Did you hear that, Floyd! They share!" Mrs. Hallaway hissed over her shoulder.

"I do not share!" Fiona said as she pushed the branch with all of her might, and Henry's foot popped out just as Bebe threw up all over the side of the house.

Henry grabbed the crowbar and passed it back to Mrs. Hallway with a word of thanks, said goodnight to her and Bebe, and dove through Fiona's window, taking her with him. They landed with a thump with Henry on top of Fiona.

"What kind of neighborhood is this, Fiona?" Henry asked in her ear, giving her goosebumps.

"Your Aunt Charlie recommended it," Fiona reminded him.

Henry pushed himself off of Fiona, then turned and slammed the window shut, pulling the blinds down.

"Now, we're all alone," Henry whispered as he turned back towards her.

The sound of Bebe throwing up again could be heard through the wall. "The thin walls could cause a problem." Henry mused in a normal speaking voice.

"Oh, they do!" Bebe called as she threw up again.

"Who's in there with Fiona?" Lenora asked as she joined Bebe.

"It's Henry!" Fiona called.

"Hi, Henry!" Lenora called back. "I'll get Bebe cleaned up, then take her across the hall with me. That should give you a little more privacy," she offered.

"Thanks!" Henry said in his normal voice.

"You're welcome," Lenora answered.

Fiona was still on her back in the middle of her floor with her arm thrown over her eyes. She should be embarrassed by the entire situation, but she wasn't. It felt like a typical outcome for her and Henry's blossoming relationship.

Henry laid down next to her and pulled her close. "We'll just wait."

And that's what they did. They laid together in silence with Fiona's head on Henry's chest as she curled up next to him while they listened to the comical scene unfold in the room next door.

"Don't they teach you stealth in the special forces?" Fiona asked after a few minutes as she replayed the scene that had just happened in her head.

"You're in the special forces!" Bebe called from the other side of the wall. "Did you hear that, Lenora!" Bebe shouted. "He's in a special force! Remember, Fiona. You promised to share!"

"Floyd wants to know what branch?" They heard Mrs. Hallaway's muted voice ask. Bebe's window must still be open, and Mrs. Hallaway was watching the show.

"Navy!" Henry called, closing his eyes as he appeared to pray for patience. "And I have to be back on base in a few hours, so can we get this show on the road?" he shouted. "Fiona and I have a few things to discuss."

"Floyd wants to know if that means you're a SEAL?" Mrs. Hallaway shouted.

"Yes! He is!" Fiona shouted back before she buried her head in Henry's chest, laughing as Henry pulled her close in a tight hug.

"He's perfect!" Bebe cried again before they heard the window slam, and Lenora called one last goodnight.

"Goodnight!" Mrs. Hallaway called back before they heard her window close too.

"Have I told you how proud of you I am, Fiona?" Henry asked. "You have changed so much in this last year."

Fiona felt her heart expand. "Are we going to talk now?" she asked as she lifted herself up and looked down at him.

"We will talk after I'm done kissing you," Henry insisted as he rolled her over and did that very thing.

Climbing through windows was a very romantic thing indeed, she thought as she sighed and wrapped her arms around her hero.
