"Hey, Adira," Justin smiles, pulling her into a hug.

"Hi," she says, beaming.

Sitting down, she clears her throat. "Thank you so much for coming. I know it's a bit weird to ask you to dinner after everything went down way back when, but it's a bit of a thank-you dinner." She sighs. "I just . . . I want to thank you for everything. I don't think I could have made it through that without you, Justin. Truly."

He reaches out, taking her hands in his. "Anything for an old friend, Dira. You know that. We didn't end on bad terms. I told you I would do anything to make sure you're okay. No matter what."

She squeezes his hands and pulls away. "I know. I know. You always said that."

"I've always meant it."

Their eyes lock for a second too long.

"Actually, Justin . . ." She looks down. "I wanted to talk to you about something. Hailey reached out and asked me if there was anything going on between us. I said no, but she said you told her something different?"

The man blushes. "I didn't tell her there was anything going on between us. I told her we weren't working, and she automatically thought that meant I was cheating."

A frown adorns her face. "Okay—I just—I didn't want to be in the middle of anything. I don't want to give anyone another reason to leave."

Before Justin can get out another word, their waiter bounds over. "Hello, my name is Jack, and I'll be looking after your table tonight. If you have any questions or concerns, don't hesitate to ask for me by name. While you look at the menus, is there anything you'd like to drink?"
