We've all had a hard time following the relationship that is Adira and Zayn Malik (better known as Zadira by their dedicated fanbases), so Dishing Out Pop decided to make it easier for all of you (and us) by giving you a timeline of every major and juicy detail leading up to their recent announcement!

Although rumour mill had already begun spinning, Adira and Zayn confirmed their budding romance when they were papped leaving a restaurant holding hands.

Daily Pop Buzz reported the pair had been seeing each other "casually" since the end of March—more than six months before they were first photographed publicly—but only decided to make it official shortly after Adira's 18th birthday on 2 October.

After more than two years of dating—if we include the time when they were only "casually" seeing each other—and nearly two months after Zayn confirmed that he would be leaving One Direction "to be a normal 22-year-old," the two released separate statements announcing their split amidst speculation that they had been on a "break" since March but were still together.

Only three weeks after announcing he and Adira had split, Malik confirmed his engagement to Little Mix songstress Perrie Edwards, leading to accusations that he had cheated on Adira.

"We're over the moon. We honestly couldn't be happier," Malik said at the time.

Two weeks after Adira's mother was diagnosed with lung cancer, Zayn called off his engagement to Edwards.

Celeb Boo! reported that Zayn ended their relationship via text message and the abrupt split left Edwards "devastated."

In an interview with Chaser Magazine for their January 2016 issue, Zayn addressed rumours that he ended his engagement with Edwards over text.

"If you could word it exactly this way, I'd be very appreciative. I have more respect for Perrie than to end anything over text message. I love her a lot, and I always will, and I would never end our relationship like that," he explained. "She knows that, I know that, and the public should know that as well. I don't want to explain why or what I did, I just want the public to know I didn't do that."

Exactly one week after Adira lost her brother, Aden, to suicide following his battle with depression, Malik posted this selfie with Adira to Instagram.

Adira's mother, Julia, lost her battle with lung cancer on July 8, only eight months after her diagnosis.

Two days later, Derek Furley, Adira's best friend since the two were eight when he joined her fourth grade class following his move from Australia to California, was found dead in his bathroom after intentionally overdosing on heroin at the age of 20.

Although police did not release any part of the suicide note that was discovered next to his body to the public, Chief Michael Parker said of the note, "Mr. Furley expressed his desire to end his life because he felt as though he were a burden to those around him."

Furley, who had long struggled with addiction, was twice placed in a drug rehabilitation program—at 17, then again at 19 when he suffered a bad relapse merely two weeks before he would've achieved two years of sobriety—and once said that his drug use began at 13 because he was "young and struggling to come to terms with [his] sexuality under a roof that [he] knew wouldn't accept [him]," referring to the fact that he was raised in a strict Catholic household. He was outed as gay by his sister at his 17th birthday celebration and forced out of his home and so Adira's mother took him in.

After Adira's reps released an official statement confirming the deaths, many fans took to social media to express their remorse, and Adira responded to one tweet that mentioned Zayn.

She would follow that reply up with a tweet thanking fans for their support.

The reply was what made headlines, though, and led to reports that Zayn had broken up with Adira because the deaths had left her so emotional that it ultimately strained their relationship.

As one source told Everything Fame, "Zayn just wasn't in it. Adira couldn't stop crying. Adira wouldn't do anything. She was like a zombie. He tried and he couldn't do it. He didn't know how to handle her like that. He felt horrible ending it, but he didn't want to be stuck in that."

On September 10, Adira, then 20, was arrested and charged with DUI after being seen by police driving 60 MPH in a Californian residential area with a speed limit of 25 MPH.

At the police station, Adira said that she had consumed alcohol and some prescription medication. She was cooperative but failed a field sobriety test and was given a Breathalyzer test. She was found to have a blood-alcohol level of 0.04, which, at 128 pounds, Adira could achieve with one can of beer in a 30-minute period. Still, her driver's license was suspended for one year as required by California law.

Following her arrest, Zayn released a tweet that many believed to be directed to the singer (mostly because to my one is the name of Adira's second album—an album that is said to be heavily inspired by her relationship with Zayn).

In February, Zayn was photographed visiting Adira in rehab on the anniversary of her brother's death.

The singer had been in the facility since 1 February, checking herself in after her charges of possession of a controlled substance and possession of cocaine from December were dismissed in January as officers were determined to have searched the singer's vehicle, in which Adira was the passenger and friend Aya Simone was the driver, without reasonable cause.

For her first post to social media since entering rehab, Adira uploaded this photo of Zayn in the studio to Instagram.

The post stirred both Zadira shippers (happy at the possibility of Zayn and Adira releasing music together) and Adira stans (excited to hear new music from the singer whose last drop had been a four-song EP titled thoughts in January 2016, with her last full-length album being released in August 2014).

After the couple reportedly split at the beginning of August following their two-week vacation to the beautiful island of Tahiti in July, they seemingly reunited in time to attend Adira's 22nd birthday bash.

Zayn was seen holding Adira up as they made their way to the waiting car, where the couple then began hugging and kissing, which Adira shared in a post to Instagram.

Although Zadira fans rejoiced, not everyone was happy that the couple had rekindled their romance, with one source telling Buzz Daily, "Everyone around Adira thinks he isn't right for her. They get back together, then they break up, and Adira's left with the worse end of the stick. She goes to the wrong friends and throws these wild parties and gets in so much trouble. She's been through a lot, and she feels like she needs him, so she believes his excuses and it's all okay until they break up again."

Zayn was spotted entering Adira's New York apartment and leaving the next day in the same hoodie he sported the day before.

On Christmas Day, Adira posted this adorable snapshot of her and Zayn building gingerbread houses. The singer and her family spent Christmas with the Malik's, as well as the families of Vicky Ambler and Mikey Creque, her best friends.

With things going so well, Zadira's relationship took an unexpected turn when Zayn was once again accused of cheating after he was spotted up-close and personal with another woman, since identified as Lauren Rich, during his Ibiza getaway with friends to celebrate New Year's.

Zayn quickly hit back against the accusations in a short tweet.

Adira, meanwhile, was in New York at Taylor Swift's get-together, where attendees dressed up as their childhood heroes to ring in 2018.

Why did the couple spend New Year's apart in the first place?

"They're jumping all in this time and they want to make sure all their feelings are real. They don't want to burn out. A week apart is their limit, but they think spending time with their own friends, instead of focusing all their energy on each other, will really give them an idea of where they stand in the long run," one source dished to us here at Dishing Out Pop.

Zayn and Adira showed a united front after the cheating allegations as they attended his Men in Black-themed 25th birthday party hand-in-hand.

Rumours of Zayn permanently moving into Adira's New York apartment began swirling after he put his £3.5 million North London pad on the market, and the rumours only heightened when Adira and Zayn were spotted furniture shopping together.

"Now feels like the right time to sell his house in London because he just doesn't really spend any time there. He's been trying to make it right with Adira and feels like this is the next step he has to take," one source told Celeb Chic.

In an Instagram post, Zayn confirmed that he and Adira are engaged and revealed that he popped the question on Christmas Day.

Yes, they kept it a secret for two months (and even we can't believe it)!

Days after the announcement, during her appearance on Ellen, Adira dished on the engagement, saying, "It was really special, really intimate. Both of our families were there. Yeah, that's all I'm going to say, but we're very happy."
