《Setter Ace of Shiratorizawa》18: Prelim Matchups, Moving and Memes
Advertisement
It was Monday morning when coach called all of us to the gym with news. "Alright guys, this is the match up for the preliminaries." Coach handed out the papers to us, all identical.
Our first match would be Kiyose Higashi high school, not sure who or where that is but okay. My eyes scanned the paper, landing on a familiar name.
Karasuno. If they won their match against Shirato Girls, then we would be playing them next. The thought caused a smirk to appear on my face.
After going through the sheet of paper, we headed out for the day since we didn't have practice.
"See you guys tomorrow!" I said, waving as I exited the gym.
"Yep, have a good day!" Azusa called out after me. As I walked, I noticed Ushiwaka was standing by the stairs of the club rooms.
"Hey there Wakatoshi, what's up?" I greeted as soon as I was within comfortable talking distance. He nodded to me.
"Nothing really. Can I walk you to class?" He asked, and I nodded back.
"Sure! Thank you!" We started walking when I remembered something. "Oh hey Wakatoshi, guess what guess what guess what!" I poked his bicep with every 'guess what'.
"What?"
"My coach said she's gonna have me setting more! I'm soooo excited!" I gushed out. "I got to be setter during our last practice match and it was a lot of fun!"
"That's nice." Was all he said, but I knew he didn't mean for it to sound bad or anything.
"It is! Anyway, how did your practice go after this morning?"
"The normal; some serve receive, then hitting, more serves, and then we were done." Ushiwaka shrugged.
"Sounds productive!" I grinned as we entered the building for first years. "I'm kind of hoping I become the official setter instead of just being a hitter."

This comment apparently surprised Ushiwaka as his face made a confused look. "Really?"
"Yeah! It's not like I don't like hitting, it's just..." I trailed off, sighing in content as I thought about my team in middle school. "Being the setter makes me more connected with the rest of the team because most of the players on the court are spikers so I have to know where they like it, where they are when I'm about to set, how fast it should be, and that they trust me enough to deliver the right ball and enable them to get us a point." I explained, then covered my mouth. "Sorry! I was rambling."
"It's fine." He mumbled, a thoughtful expression on his face as we stopped in front of my classroom. "See you at lunch, then."
"Right! Thank you for walking me!" I bowed, "have a good day!"
"Thanks, you too." Ushiwaka returned, then headed back out the way we had come. With a smile on my face, I stepped into the classroom and got ready for the school day.

"Thanks for helping us out guys," I smiled at Semi and Ushiwaka as I carried my two duffle bags.
"No problem Kaz," Semi shrugged, setting down another of my duffle bags as Ushiwaka put my backpack on the now empty bed.
"We'll leave you to it." Ushiwaka said, and after I had given them both hugs, they left. Tendō was leaning against the wall, watching me as I unloaded my stuff.
"So, heard that Koji switched with Shirabu and so him and Goshiki are now rooming together." He said, and my head shot up.
"Really? That's nice of him." I smiled as I tucked my pajamas in the dresser and closed the drawer.

"Yeah, weird though." The redhead shrugged, "anyway, head anything from the group chat?"
"Yeah, they said it was cool so I'll add you once I finish up." I told him with an eye roll.
"Also, Kazzy," Tendō said, his voice suddenly softer which made me pause to look at him. He smiled at me. "Thanks for sticking up for me yesterday."
"Of course, you don't deserve to be treated like that." I said, walking over to him and putting a hand on his shoulder. "You deserve the world, and nothing less."
We kept eye contact for a while, then he chuckled before bringing me into a hug and kissed my forehead. "You make it impossible not to fall for you, ya know?"
"Huh? What are you talking about?" I asked in confusion, I was just telling the truth!
"Nothing," He sighed, retracting his arms before both of our phones tinged.

Hey guys, is now a good time to get ice cream?
Sure!
You're paying right?
Yahuh
Where are we gonna meet up?
Front of the gym, see ya in ten!
Sure thing~~~~

"Come on, then! Let's go." Tendō pecked my lips l, grabbed my hand and pulled me out of the room before I had a chance to blink.
I was so confused as to what had happened that I didn't say anything until Yamagata asked what kind of ice cream I wanted.
"Yo Kaz, you okay?" He asked after we all say down at a table.
"Yeah, you.." Goshiki glanced at Semi, the one notorious for hitting people for saying bas things about people. He was focused on his ice cream so Goshiki decided it would be safe, "seemed really quiet and distracted."
"Oh, was I? Sorry.." I gave them a smile before I glanced at Tendō. He was having an enthusiastic conversation with Ushiwaka.
Goshiki followed my line of sight, his eyes narrowing before turning back to me. "Did Tendō-senpai do something to you?"
"No! No, of course not." I immediately rejected, "he just said something that was weird so I'm processing.." I lied slightly, but they bought it so we went back to eating our icy goodness. "Thanks for this Yamagata."
"I have at least 18 alterior motives." He admitted playfully, causing me to laugh.
"You and everyone else around here."
"No kidding."
"Oh, that reminds me," I got out my phone, taking the last bite of my ice cream cone before adding Tendō to the group chat.

Paternum: A Superhero Story
When Quinn finds an experimental superpower-granting costume in their parents’ attic, they didn’t expect to be drawn into a web of superhuman intrigue, but their discovery serves as the catalyst for that conspiracy to slowly unravel. At it’s heart, Paternum is an extended coming-of-age story for the main character as they become a superhero, in a world with more reasonable stakes and less powerful heroes than many superheroic worlds. Themes include what art means to different people, and what it means to be a patron, whether as a sponsor, a parent, or a supporter. I consider Paternum‘s primary influences to be the various versions of Spider-Man, J. C. McCrae’s own superhero story Worm, and Drew Hayes’ story SuperPowereds. I hope that fans of such stories can find something to enjoy in mine as well. Paternum is primarily hosted on my website (thevoidwrites.com) where it updates weekly in groups of scenes totalling approximately 2000 words. Here on Royal Road, it will update once daily with one scene at a time, but only after each act is completed on the home site - the next batch of updates is scheduled to begin on February 5th. There is a discord channel for discussion (discordapp.com/invite/QFMM6yA), and you can vote for Paternum on topwebfiction (topwebfiction.com/vote.php?for=paternum) as well. Finally, you can buy the first book of Paternum, The Swift Uplifting Rush, in a couple different ways - as an ebook through Amazon, or directly from me for a discounted price, or as a physical paperback from Amazon. Buying the book will give you access to Drawing Hands, an exclusive arc that won't ever be published on either my site or Royal Road.
