《Setter Ace of Shiratorizawa》6: Practice and Recognition

"Kaz, wake up we're gonna be late!" Goshiki shook me, but I just yawned, giving him a sleepy look.
"What are you doing this early?" I asked, to which he frowned.
"Don't you have practice this morning?" He winked, but I was not awake enough to process what was going on.
"Practice starts at 7, dufus." I muttered, making the future ace all the more confused.
"Uhhh, my practice starts at 6." He rubbed the back of his neck as I gave him an annoyed look. "Sorry, y-you can go back to sleep!"
"Nah, I'm up." I decided, stretching with another yawn. "I'll get dressed, gimme a sec."
"Sure!" Goshiki nodded, still slightly embarrassed that he woke me up even though I didn't have practice until seven.
"Ready to go?" I asked, coming out of the bathroom with my track uniform on, my purple shirt and shorts on underneath it. Goshiki nodded.
"Yes. Are you going to come to our practice then yours or..?"
"I'll warm up with you guys if that's cool." The two of us exited the room, locking the door behind us.
~•~
"Hey guys!" I waved with a grin as Goshiki and I entered the boy's gym.
"Hey Kazzy! Whatcha doing here? Skipping out on your own practice?" Tendou teased. I rolled my eyes.
"Nope! I'm gonna warm up with you guys if that's cool you all." I glanced around at all the boys, who either hummed or nodded in agreement.
"So, how was the game at Karasuno or wherever?" The redhead asked me as I put on my volleyball shoes.
"It was pretty fun, too bad I didn't get to play though."
"Huh? Why were you there if you weren't playing?!"

"I told you, for my brother."
"Oh right, ha. Did he at least win?"
"Yeah, it's was pretty awesome!"
"ENOUGH CHATTING, GET GOING ALREADY!" Coach Washijo yelled in annoyance.
After warming up with the boy's team, I jogged over to the girl's gym. Practice went well, I had to warm up again, then do some serving, more receiving, 6 on 6, hitting lines, and lastly a cool down.
"Nice job today! Let's get at it tomorrow too!" Azusa waved, and everyone yelling in agreement.
I decided to go check on the boys, so I made my way to the opposite side of campus. Arriving, I leaned against the doorframe as I watched the boys playing 6 on 6.
"First year!" The old coach yelled, causing me to jump and look at him.
"Yes sir!" I saluted, making him roll his eyes.
"You just gonna stand there or are you gonna join in?" He demanded, which made me grin.
"I'll join sir! Where do you need me?"
"I need a right side, Ushiwaka left early for family reasons." He explained, so I nodded.
"Alright, which side am I on?"
"Tendō's."
"Yooooooooo! What's up girl, done with practice already or just skipping out again?" Tendou smirked as we high fived.
"I'm not a skipper, practice just got out. Now let's do this." I grinned at him, high fiving the rest of my team until coming to someone I hadn't met yet. "Oh hi! I don't think we've met yet."
"Yeah, I was sick. I hear good things about you, Kaz." The light haired male nodded, "I'm Shirabu Kenjirō, hope you live up to all I've heard."
"Probably will." I snickered.
"Get going already! We only have an hour left of practice!" The coach yelled, so everyone got in their positions.

"If you're ever in a tight spot, I'm good with whatever kind of set you want to do." I muttered to Shirabu, who nodded.
"Good to know." He then went to serve. Switching with Sagae, I kept my eyes on the ball. As soon as it left the setter's hands, I was reacting. Tendou went with me; going up at the same time, we shut Goshiki down.
"Hell yeah!" Tendou and I high ten-ed as Goshiki scowled. Shirabu went back to serve again, but this time the ball came back.
"Chance ball!" Yamagata yelled, "it's mine!" Me and the other two spikers transitioned off the net, our eyes on Shirabu.
He was curious as to what exactly I could do, so he back setted it, yelling my name. I smirked, doing my approach and jumping.
As I jumped, my eyes went to the blockers. I didn't really feel like going full power through them, so I went with the extremely sharp angle. The ball slammed into the ground around the five foot, causing everyone's eyes to widen as I landed.
"Holy shit." The coaches mumbled as my team attacked me with praise. The other side was still in shock at how a girl could do that well against them.
"That's my girl!" Tendou slapped my back, only for me to shove him away with a laugh.
"Come on guys, we still have a game to win!" I cheered, my teammates joining me. We fought out the rest of the match, winning by a landslide.
"Hell yeah, we won!" I grinned as the team did a cool down. Tendou and Shirabu were beside me.
"Yeah, you did amazing out there, yet again!" The redhead wiggled his eyebrows, causing me to laugh.
"I honestly didn't know what to expect, but you surprised me today Kaz." Shirabu complimented, and I smiled at him.
"Your sets were awesome too! That last one was the best though, for me at least."
"Yeah, we noticed by how you practically slam dunked it over the blockers." The three of us snickered together.
"First year!" The coach Washijo roared, scaring me slightly. Immediately standing, I jogged over to where the two coaches were standing. "Well done today, you really surprised us." He told me. "Now, make sure to get the girls a gold metal, will you?"
"Of course, sir." I bowed, then was dismissed. Practice ended fairly quickly after that, and it was already 3 in the afternoon. "Goooood I'm starving!" I complained to Tendou and Goshiki, who had decided to walk me to the cafeteria.
"Me tooooo," Goshiki joined in, the two of them whining about how empty their stomachs feel as Tendou rolled his eyes.

8 177The Great Expedition(Hiatus)
In a city surrounded by deadly mists, the runner Lleu spends his days delivering messages and packages while trying to move up in the world. One chance encounter later and his life is catapulted in every direction. Author's Comment: I've stopped working on this for the time being. I lost interest in continuing this story in favor of other projects.
8 106Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
