you had made the mistake of telling him what had happened with past boyfriends when they met your brother and dad, both of which are extremely protective of you.

"do you think this is okay to wear y/n?" matthew asked you worriedly.

you nodded at him and put your hand on his neck to massage his baby hairs, "we are in an airport. you don't have to change to impress my family. i think you look handsome." you said.

he smiled a little bit and rested his head on your shoulder, "i'm nervous." he admitted.

"i know you are. you just have to give them a little bit to warm up to you and they will love you." you told him.

matthew looked up at you and nodded, "hopefully..." he mumbled.

"now let's get going or we are going to be late." you said and smacked his butt.

matthew gasped and glared at you jokingly as you chuckled.

you got the rental car and in about 10 minutes, you had made it to your parents' house.

"oh hi y/n." your mother said, coming out to greet you.

"hi mom." you said and hugged your mom.

matthew stood behind you timidly with bags in his hands.

"you must be matthew. i've heard so much about you. thank you for taking care of y/n." your mom said and pulled matthew into a hug.

"it's nice to meet you." matthew said.

"it's nice to meet you too matthew. it's a pleasure." she responded.

you could see matthew tense up a little when your dad and your brother stepped outside. you kept an arm around his waist.

"hi sweetheart." your dad said and gave you a hug.

"hey dad." you responded.

your brother greeted you and both of them turned to matthew.

"matthew." he introduced himself and shook their hands.

"here. we'll help bring the bags down to the guest room." your dad said.

you mentally cursed. you knew matthew was already nervous and having to be alone with both your brother and your dad for some time would be bad. you knew they would pepper matthew with questions.

sure enough, when matt came upstairs, he looked slightly terrified.

you patted the chair next to you and sat down. you rested a hand on his thigh to help comfort him.

"i hope they didn't bother you too much." your mother said to matthew.

you could tell that matthew only shook his head out of politeness. he looked like he got absolutely bombarded with questions.

you smiled encouragingly at him and patted his thigh.

"i love you." you mouthed to him.

he smiled back at you and mouthed it back.

at dinner time, all your dad and your brother did was glare at matthew every time he talked.

this continued for about 3 days of the trip until they finally began to warm up to matthew.

they began to invite him to help with things and would ask him questions. they treated him like a normal person instead of an enemy and you were thankful.

"well it seems they finally warmed up to you." you said to matthew that night when you climbed into bed.

"yeah i'm glad. i was starting to think they were never going to." matthew chuckled.

"i'm sorry that they do that." you apologized.

"no it's fine." matthew began and then chuckled, "i think that my dad, brady, and i would do the same thing if taryn came home with a boyfriend."

you knew how much matthew and brady loved and protected their younger sister.

"i wouldn't doubt it." you laughed.

"i can't be mad because i know it's just them making sure that you got the person you deserve." matthew smiled.

"well i did and his name is matthew tkachuk." you said, "he's way more than i ever deserved, but he's still laying next to me."
