when you woke up this morning, ryan wasn't next to you in bed. you pushed your torso out of the covers and looked around for any sign of him. the bathroom lights were turned off, but your closet door was ajar. you spotted the small note and glass of water at your bedside.
katrina,
i will be back later tonight, but i left you a surprise downstairs.
love you,
rnh
your eyebrows furrowed in confusion. "a surprise downstairs"? you had literally no idea what that could be.
you quickly got dressed into a casual outfit and made your way down the stairs to the living room. you glanced around the room and saw absolutely nothing. nothing that looked very surprise-like.
"good morning kitty kat."
you turned around quickly to see 3 figures in the kitchen, attempting to make breakfast. you couldn't quite distinguish who it was, but only there was only one person who ever called you that stupid nickname.
"mitch?" you called out hopefully.
"yes kitty kat?" he stepped into the living room.
you gasped and ran towards him, jumping into a hug.
you and mitch had met through connor. you guys got along really well and talked almost everyday.
"mitchy! why are you here?"
"you want me to be honest?"
you nodded quickly.
"connor and i missed each other." he said and went to hug connor.
connor hugged mitch back, "i missed you too marns."
leon chuckled and you turned to him.
"leon is like the third wheel here. i'm sorry drai." you laughed.
"no katrina," he joined the hug with the boys, "i may have only officially met mitch today, but we are now bestfriends."
mitch nodded with a smile.
"oh shit. leon, the pancakes." mitch screamed.
leon gasped and jumped to the food.
"we're good boys." he called out.
everyone let out a dramatic sigh of relief.
"breakfast, katrina?" connor asked.
"yes please."
four plates were made and all of you went to sit at the dining table.
"so why exactly are you all here?"
the boys all looked at each other in slight fear. mitch hit connor under the table and all of them looked back at you.

"well, we were all going to have a nice private dinner at a restaurant tonight for mitch's arrival, but there was an issue with the reservation so ryan went to sort it out." connor explained.
all three of them smiled at you, but the smiles were filled with doubt.
you nodded, "it would be believable if you guys didn't look so scared."
their faces turned to horror once more.
"but for your sake, i won't ask anymore questions." you shoved a slice of your pancake into your mouth.
"yay i'm so excited for dinner tonight!" you played along.
connor, leon, and mitch all cheered and nodded with you.
the hours passed by quickly in the company of the three boys. it was a mix of chaos and absolute silence.
"OH GOD WE ARE GOING TO BE LATE." mitch yelled while hitting leon and connor and pointing at the clock.
"KATRINA DRESS FOR FORMAL."
they all jumped up and ran to bathrooms and bedrooms to, you could only guess, change.
seeing their panic made you run upstairs to your room. you threw on one of your favorite outfits that also happened to be ryan's favorite. you swiftly made it through your routine to make yourself look pretty.
when you made your way downstairs, you saw three boys, all in suits.
"you look very beautiful, katrina." they all said synchronized.
you laughed and walked towards them.
"look at my handsome boys." you said like a mom and adjusted their ties.
"thank you." they all said.
"we need to leave." leon said.
"okay. who's driving? please say connor." you prayed.
mitch and leon looked offended.
"yeah i'll drive." connor said, smirking.
"no offense mitch, you drive like a 16 year old and leon," you sighed, "leon, i've actually got pulled over with you driving so..."
leon sighed dramatically, "fine."
the four of you all drove to a restaurant, or you thought you were.
"connor, where are we?" you asked.
"you'll see." he spoke.
they pulled into the parking lot of a large park in edmonton. it had a long walking path that you and ryan liked to walk often.

you all got out of the car and begin to walk.
you snatched connor's sleeve, "what the hell is this about?"
"it's a surprise from ryan, katrina." he explained.
you sighed, "fine."
you kept walking. it wasn't exactly fun to walk on gravel in heels. you focused on your feet as you walked.
"katrina?"
"yes mitchy?"
"you really need to pay attention to your surroundings." mitch said sassily.
you looked up to tell him off, but your eyes were met with ones of your older brother ty rattie.
"ty!" you yelled excitedly.
you ran toward him and jumped into a hug.
ty had been playing in europe for the past year and to say you missed him was an understatement. your big brother was your rock growing up.
"hi katrina." he said.
"what the hell are you doing here?" you smiled.
"visiting my baby sister." ty went over to the bench next to him and picked up a bouquet of flowers, "these are for you."
"thank you ty."
"oh katrina, they aren't from me. look at the note." ty smirked.
you took a peek at the note.
i hope you like your surprises my love, but there's one more.
-ry
"come on now. we have somewhere to be." ty grabbed your hand and began to drag you along.
leon, connor, and mitch were close behind, bickering about something.
in front of you, you saw a beautifully lit gazebo. you furrowed your eyebrows towards the boys.
"this is where we leave you." you looked at them confused, "go on." they shooed you.
you slowly walked up to the gazebo taking in the beautiful sight. when you got to the three stairs at the entrance you saw ryan all dressed up in your favorite suit of his.
"hi beautiful." he smiled brightly.
your smile grew as well, "ry, what's this all about?"
he shrugged and took your hand.
"you look stunning katrina."
"thank you ryan. you look very handsome as well."
"thank you." he said quietly.
you turned around to admire the decorated gazebo, "did you do this, ryan?"
"yeah, with the help of your brother and a few teammates and wags." ryan said.
"well it looks really nice." you complimented.
"katrina?"
you turned around back at ryan. he looked a little fidgety, playing with the sleeves of his suit and constantly fixing his pants.
"what's up ry?" you asked softly.
he took a deep breath, "i love you so much katrina. you have changed my life in so many positive ways. you make me feel like i am worth it, along with keeping me sane and tolerating me during the up and downs of being an nhl player. these last few years have been so much better because of you. they have also made me realize that i want to spend the rest of my life with you."
ryan got down on one knee and began to dig in his pocket.
your eyes widened, "oh my god ryan."
"will you make me the happiest man on the earth and become katrina nugent-hopkins? will you marry me?"
"yes!" you exclaimed excitedly.
ryan's face lit up. he jumped up and picked you up to hug you. you clung onto him for dear life.
"i love you so much ryan." you whispered.
"i love you too katrina."
ryan slipped the beautiful ring on your finger and you admired it. you then looked back up at ryan and hugged him again, giving him a kiss.
"NOW LETS PARTY." mitch yelled, coming out of nowhere.
you and ryan laughed. all of you travelled to your dinner reservation. you felt euphoric. you were engaged to the love of your life and with your family and friends.
"he did have my blessing by the way." ty said.
you laughed, "ry, you asked ty for his blessing?"
"yeah i know how much he means to you." ryan said.
you gave ryan another kiss, "you know me so well."
your party of 7 celebrated the whole night eating what felt like a 8 course meal and even bringing the party back to the house. everyone was on cloud nine.
it was the best feeling in the world.

Beast
A threat to the galaxy has come from another, and the Union of intelligent life will go to any length to stop it. Military Quarantine has held for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.

Chains of Dominion
If Jake wins the local Fantasy Tactics Online tournament, he’ll have everything he’s ever dreamed of — a ticket out of town and the attention of a beautiful woman. However, this woman has more planned for him than a bus ride to the local metropolis. She teleports him back to her Realm and declares him her Master… and says it’s up to him to save the world. No pressure. Rival Dominions vie for power, and they are all far larger and more organized than Jake’s rag-tag group of women, but he has two advantages: the rules of this world are eerily similar to those of Fantasy Tactics Online, and his wildest dirtiest sexual fantasies act as a power multiplier for his all-female army. Warning: The heroes have intense tactical battles, wild kinky sex, and near-constant flirtation. The villains are disturbing and cruel. If the idea of villains doing bad things bothers you, please do not read books ever, but especially don’t read this one.

The Fall
Perhaps the most well known of all devils, demons, or fallen angels is the one known as Lucifer, Satan, the Father of Lies. The cultural influence of this figure throughout history is by no means small. Despite that, it wasn’t until the time of Milton’s classic – Paradise Lost – that we saw an attempt to portray a dramatized version of the events leading to this figure’s fall from grace and power. And while this is the case, Paradise Lost is not about Lucifer – though it goes into great detail about his potential musings. No, Paradise Lost was, and still is, about the fall of mankind. So, in light of this, and the feeling that the classical story deserved another telling, I present to you all The Fall – a story focused particularly on Lucifer’s fall from grace and his musings both before and after.
