"davy! don't overly move or your horribly vulnerable on the open side. you won't have enough time to get back." you demonstrated to david rittich.
he nodded his masked head as you struck your attention back on his precise movements.
"coach hall!" you felt someone envelope you in a hug and saw curly hair.
"hi matthew." you smiled and rolled your eyes from his formal address of you.
"what are you doing out here?" he spun to be in front of you.
you scooted him over so you could pay attention to david.
"jordan's sick, so here i am." you commented looking forward.
you were the assistant goalie coach. you usually did more of the behind the scenes work— in the gym or working on senses. every once in a while you'd step up though. today was one of those days because the head goalie coach was bedridden with illness.
"so are you on the bench tonight?" matthew asked.
"i'm always on the bench matt."
"but like on on the bench. you stand on the side most of the time laura." matthew countered.
"yes i will be."
"TKACHUK BACK IN LINE." the head coach yelled.
"bye laur." he skated off quickly.
you watched as david perfected his movements.
"fuck yeah davy." you slid over to him and patted him on the helmet, "that's it."
he squeezed water into his mouth, "sooo..."
"what now?" you scoffed.
"you and chuckie?" he raised his eyebrows.
you shook your head hastily.
"come on. you gotta tell him about your little crush eventually." he said way too loud for your comfort.
you shushed him quickly as he chuckled.
"that's a secret old man." you whined, "i trusted you."

"i won't tell him." he hugged you.
calgary flames versus edmonton oilers
you got dressed in an all black suit with a dainty gold necklace layered on top. you'd be standing on the bench tonight so you had to look your best. if you look good, you look official.
you drove to the rink and got ready for the game.
it was enjoyable to be standing on the bench overlooking the ice. truly the best view in hockey and few people would be blessed with the view. you were beyond grateful.
each commercial break david would come by you for advice and feedback.
you kicked the back of the bench where matthew was sitting, "stop looking at me while you're on the ice tkachuk. i'll do my job, you do yours."
"it's hard not to look at you hun." he said climbing over the boards for his shift.
you shrugged of his words and paced the bench watching the game.
late in the second, you had your eyes focused on the oilers zone. the flames were making a strong push for the net until kassian got the puck and attempted to clear it.
it was obvious that he failed when the frozen rubber puck slammed directly into your leg. kassian was no weakling when it came to clearing the puck. there was some immediate excruciating pain.
your leg gave out and you fell and the last thing you remembered is slamming your head into the side of the bench.
all of the skaters rushed towards you. david was out of his net and skating over.
matthew saw that you were unconscious and being tended to by the trainers holding a towel to your bleeding head.
"nice aim kassian." he chirped, cross checking him.
zack kassian cross checked him back. they went back and forth for a bit until the gloves were dropped.

now not only was there an unconscious goalie coach, there was two players brawling. the refs had their hands full.
some of the players helped you off of the bench and back to the locker room.
2 hours later
your eyes fluttered open and you looked around.
hospital
every memory flooded back. you couldn't help but laugh. i mean zack kassian didn't mean to hit the goalie coach. it was an accident. it was lowkey funny.
it was lonely in the hospital room. all of your family lived in british columbia, more specifically around vancouver so you didn't expect them to fly to calgary because you got hit with a puck. it would be dumb.
a distressed looking, messy haired matthew tkachuk ran into the room.
well, you're not lonely anymore.
"laura." he breathed out.
"yes?" you responded.
"are you okay?"
"do i look okay?" you said sassily.
"yeah slightly." matthew shrugged.
"well then that's your answer."
matthew smiled, "that's the laura i love."
"hmm?" you questioned.
"yeah you heard me right." he smirked, "i love you laura and i've heard from the grapevine that you love me too."
"david!" you exclaimed.
matthew smiled as you threw a small fit on david's betrayal.
"well matt, you aren't wrong. i am quite fond of you." you laughed.
"well if i'm fond of you and you're fond of me, want to go on a date?" he asked in suspense.
"when i get out of this hospital," you paused, "yes, 100%."
matthew nodded his head happily.
"and you're gonna take care of my concussed head and fractured tibia." you smirked.
"oh i don't mind."

After the End: Serenity
We all want to believe we are heroes of our own story - unless we want to be the villain, of course. At the end of everything, the Final Reaper decided he hadn’t been a hero. Driven by a desire to right the wrongs he was subjected to, he killed everyone who wronged him or his people - which turned out to be everyone that wasn’t killed by someone else first. He'd won - but it was a hollow victory. Eventually, Order’s Voice found a way out. If the only existing being would agree to give up most of his power, the Voice could reset the multiverse to an earlier time with a few minor changes. Of course, the Voice couldn't ask it that way. It could only ask if the Final Reaper was willing to start over from when Earth was first brought into Order. It was an easy decision, and yet it wasn’t. Was he willing to go through eons of pain again to not be alone? Yes. In a heartbeat. Not that his heart beat anymore. Now it would. Perhaps he could even be a hero, this time. When he landed in his old body - more or less - on Earth, the Final Reaper once again became Thomas. He was both and neither. He needed a new name for a new life. Serenity. ------------------------------------------ While this is technically a System Apocalypse story, it's a System Apocalypse that is designed to have a large percentage of the population survive and prosper. There are a lot of problems that come with the appearance of the Voice, and it's entirely possible to lose. Earth has some special opportunities, but also special challenges. The first time around, Earth won the first round and lost the second. Serenity has ten years from when the Voice arrives to prevent that from happening. It will be a group effort; Serenity can't win alone - which is difficult for someone who's been alone for as long as he has. Of course, that's only his second priority. ------------------------------------------- Updates Daily A note on the nonhuman lead tag: He isn't human, and hasn't been human for a very, very long time (or maybe not long at all, depending on how you count it). He still thinks of himself as human, either way. The content warnings are mostly to give me room to write; this fiction is not intended to be edgy, but once in a while a character will swear or someone will get seriously injured. The cover image is a Chandra/Hubble composite image of VV 340 / Arp 302 / UGC 9618. While we're not going to space itself any time soon in the story, people from elsewhere are coming to Earth and Serenity will visit other planets. Plus, I like space imagery.
