There was a heavy atmosphere settling over the condo, between the frigid air rushing inside from the window that had been left open and the tension between the couple rising to its peak, there was absolutely no room for comfort within the walls.

Y/N couldn't believe what she was hearing. Throughout the entirety of their relationship and even some time before that, she had been messaging Matthew on the internet?

"This is some kind of joke right?" she looked up at him in complete disbelief. The thought that she could have gotten so close with Scotty, only to find out that it was actually her boyfriend was beyond her.

Matthew sat down on the couch next to her and rubbed his face. "No." he answered. Looking at his phone, he gave her access to it- allowing her to scroll through every single message that he had ever sent.

In return, she did the same.

There was relief between the two of them to find that they hadn't been sending any messages since they became official, and even then- there was a lack of messages during the weeks leading up to them becoming official.

They only had time for each other, or rather they only wanted to invest, their time with one another.

Scrolling through every single message, Y/N felt incredibly dumb. How could she not have seen this before. It wasn't until she really sat down and dissected the messages that she noticed the familiar phrasing matthew used in the texts.

Between certain emojis being used and the american spelling of certain words, it was clear as day; Matthew was in fact scotty.

"So Scotty huh?" Y/N swallowed harshly. She was still working on wrapping her head around everything that was going on.

Sighing dejectedly, her boyfriend nodded. "Yeah- Cause I was born in Scottsdale." he mumbled.

The woman followed along with a short understanding nod.

Suddenly her blood ran cold and all colour drained from her face. She looked over at matthew worriedly and took a deep breath. "Why did you message Iris- i mean, me?" she caught herself.

Noticing the furrow in his brows, Y/N was scared of the answer she was about to receive. "Why did you text matt?" she asked him once more.

Matthew suddenly realized what she was inferring. "I never planned on cheating on you." he quickly reassured her. He tried to reach out and grab her hands but she had pulled away too eagerly from him.

"Well- you said you needed a distraction! I just- why after all these months would you text her- me!" she slapped her hand against her forehead frustratedly.

Anger boiled inside Matthew's body, he couldn't believe that Y/N would accuse him of such a thing. "So did you! I would never cheat on you Y/N!" He defended himself.

Y/N shoved the phone at him as tears started to come to her eyes. "Then why?! Why did you open the app at all?!" she whimpered.

"Because I couldn't risk losing the only person I've ever loved!" He outbursts at her.

Suddenly silence echoed throughout the room, halting the conversation within an instant.

Staring numbly at Matthew, Y/N's head was spinning. It was as if all the sound had been sucked out of the room and replaced with a deafening seal.

Matthew's hands trembled as he felt his words get caught in his throat, coming out raw as he explained himself. "I couldn't risk losing you... because I love you so goddamn much Y/N-" He crossed the distance between him and her, coming close and holding her hands.

"I love you so much that it hurts- I just needed to talk to someone that I trusted, that wouldn't judge me..." he told her. He knew it was a pathetic excuse but hopefully she would understand.

Y/N held onto his hands tightly, tracing the calloused skin with her fragile grasp. "You could never lose me." she whispered carefully. Looking up at him, she reached out and cupped his cheek.

"You may annoy me beyond belief... but I would follow you to the ends of the earth matt." she gulped. "I love you too." she pressed her lips against his and let her emotions and warmth transfer to him.

Matthew sunk into her touch and held onto her tightly. He was beyond relieved that she forgave him. After all these months that they had spent together, he never imagined that he would be confessing his love like this- certainly he would have preferred to do it in a calmer setting, but he knew that Y/N would never forget his love for her. Just as he would never forget the love he held for her.

They were messy and broken, but their love was unconditional.
