《The Dark Knows Me || Tokoyami x reader/oc》2 | An Unexpected Encounter

Lily was always seen as 'cold' and 'scary' by people. When she was young, she was bullied for the scar that was standing out on her forehead. It stuck with her ever since. She almost had a nice childhood because of her two friends.

But I guess fate wasn't up for it.

When she was little, she was delicate but beautiful. An innocent little soul that wanted to explore the world and its mysteries. She acted vulnerable and would always hide behind someone she knows when she had a chance.

Bakugo and Midoriya would have always played with her when they were little, even if she wasn't often allowed.

It all changed and fell apart because of the incident.

One day, she just stopped going out to play with her friends. Bakugo and Midoriya didn't exactly know why.

She grew up emotionless. She never really learned how to smile. In the other hand, what would she be smiling about? Is there a good reason for her to smile?

Because of her emotionless demeanor, people feared and didn't want to befriend her. She would always push people away for she is scared that she will just hurt the person.

When she did make 'friends' they betrayed her and stabbed her right at the back. They used her. They bullied her. They abused her.

Her only friends were Midoriya and Bakugo, since they stayed with her while growing up. She never really knew where to turn to, where to pour out her feelings.

So she just kept it to herself, bottling up the emotions deep inside.

It was 5:30pm. After a long day, Lily decided to have a drink before going home. She was just scrolling through her phone as she headed to a nearby cafe. Even when her eyes are focused on the screen, she made sure to take little glances as she walked, to make sure she wouldn't cause any accidents.

The reason she went to the library, is because she needed more ideas and focus to write a new chapter for her book. Writing and drawing are basically her main hobbies, considering her quirk.

After a long moment of walking, she finally reached the cafe. As she opened the doors, the delicious scent of caffeine and baked sweets greeted her. She felt like something was tugging her sleeve in her mind, telling her to check her phone for any new news.

That can wait, she needs to order something first.

What would she order? Eh, doesn't really matter to her. She doesn't want to order something fancy.

Being the simple bean she is, she walked up to the ordering station and gave her order. "One vanilla milkshake, please." Her hand quickly rushed to the side of her bag to find some loose change.

After successfully finding the right amount of money, she placed them onto the counter of the cash register. The person behind it punched the order in and grabbed her money.

The white haired girl averted her eyes once she got a chance to avoid awkwardness. She wasn't really fond of socializing with others.

In fact, she's scared of messing up.

Even as simple as asking for help, she couldn't get the words out right because of her lack of communication.

The worker placed her money inside the cash register and went to the side to grab her already prepared drink. The worker handed it to her and she gladly took it. "T-Thank you." She shyly thanked before leaving the cashier.

After scanning the area for available seats, she found a table near a glass window that wasn't already occupied. She walked over to the table and sat down on one of the seats, placing her milkshake on top of the platform. Her bags were placed beside her feet.

She looked around. The other tables were occupied with other guests. They were talking, laughing, and were just having fun.

Even if she was used to be alone, she wasn't comfortable being outside for a long time. Her parents decided to keep her indoors to 'protect' her.

Young Bakugo and Midoriya would always call out to her just so they can play with each other. But her parents didn't allow it

Well, sometimes she is allowed but it was barely enough for a short period of time.

Oh how she envied her two friends.

She watched them from inside through her window as they innocently played with one other.

Oh how she craved to be with her friends.

How she wanted to experience the world with her parents' trusts.

How she wanted to laugh and have fun with them.

...

She sat there, alone.

...She was always alone.

This isn't exactly new, right?

Right?

Lily sighed as she grabbed her phone out of her bag before taking a sip from her drink. Trying to shake off the uneasy feeling she had from earlier, she finally checked the news.

Her eyes widened as something quickly caught her attention. She shook her head in disbelief at the sudden information. She refreshed the page to make sure she wasn't just seeing things.

'A Sludge Villain attacked a student and took him hostage. The student's name is Katsuki Bakugo. A green haired boy suddenly rushed into the dangerous situation, trying to help the other student.'

Many pictures followed the article. And there it is, a picture of Bakugo and Midoriya seen in the incident just a while ago.

"Aho. You bloody idiot." She muttered, gripping her phone tightly in her hand.

She left Midoriya by himself just for the rest of the day and trusted him that he would go home safetly. Then what did he do?

Yeah. Get into trouble.

Welp, I guess she just couldn't leave him even for one moment.

The slighest of anger suddenly changed into guilt. Lily felt quite guilty and thought it was her fault for leaving him unattended. (You a parent or something?)

She has always protected the boy from Bakugo and other types of danger he got himself into.

"How could you act so carelessly..? This is my fault, huh? I shouldn't have left you..ugh." she muttered once again, running a hand through her hair.

With no hesitation, she immediately texted the two boys that got involved in the incident. Being a caring friend, the white haired girl scolded the green haired boy through messages with along the lines of "I left you for one second and then you got yourself into trouble'. He panicked and apologized many times in their chat. She got irritated at him for making her worry.

Of course, she didn't forget and messaged the blasty blond as well, making sure that he was alright and not injured. Knowing him though, he rudely tried to shake her off and told her that he was fine and didn't need any help.

And yes. They were in all caps.

She sighed, placing her phone down before taking sip from her drink to calm her down.

Dealing with these two really is a handful.

Though, their presence weren't really a bother to her. She's actually quite grateful to them for befriending her.

"Excuse me, miss." A male voice greeted, suddenly pulling her out of her thoughts. She looked around, trying to find the source.

"Down here." The voice indicated that the source was actually below her natural line of sight.

Following the directions given, she looked down and saw a rather cute...animal..? He appears to be a possible combination of several different animals, including a dog, a mouse, and a bear. He has the head of a mouse with black eyes, a large scar over the right one.

He was wearing something awfully formal. But it didn't really matter to her since he can wear anything he's comfortable with.

Even if he was a.. rather interesting individual, she thought he was quite cute.

"May I sit here please? There aren't any available tables left." He explained while innocently blinking up at her. "O-Of course." Lily shyly answered.

Having her approval, the male climbed up the unoccupied seat in front of her. Of course, he wouldn't just have a seat without a drink of his very own. He then placed a cup of tea on the table for him to enjoy. Being grateful, he smiled at her.

"Thank you for your kindness." He said, bringing out his pinky finger while taking a sip from his tea. Being too shy and nervous to speak, Lily just nodded as a reply.

She'd honestly rather be alone, but his presence wasn't exactly a bother to her. He's quite polite, so he has points for that. The atmosphere around them wasn't awkward either.

The young male actually had a peaceful vibe around him, making the girl feel a bit relaxed.

His scars tell stories, but she doesn't need to question him.

'Small and fragile...'

She thought. That's just how her parents see her.

After getting used to his presence, the both of them drank their drinks at a comfortable silence.

The white haired girl took one final sip from her drink, leaving no remains in her glass of milkshake. She gave out a satisfied sigh after refreshing her throat from the fresh milk.

"Thank you for letting me sit here, miss--"

"Lily Yane."

The small chimera smiled at her. "Miss Yane." He said, grabbing his cup before lightly jumping off his chair. He faced her and gave a cute little bow. "It was a pleasure. Excuse me, I'll be going now." He stated before headed to the place where they dispose the dishes.

Not long after, after securing her bags in her hands, she followed after him to dispose of her glass as well. She then went out the door.

What a day.

'I'll just hope that Izu told father that I'm arriving home late..'

She thought to herself. Her father can be quite a prick sometimes.

Lily stood patiently at the crosswalk, waiting for the signal that will let her pass through. The people waiting with her grew casually. She stared off into the distance, a blank expression on her face. She heard people chatting as they stood there. She even heard some drunkards were in their group as well.

Adults...why are they left unattended?

The sign eventually turned green, signaling that they are now able to cross the road. The girl couldn't handle interactions with other people, so she took off first, along with other people that have places to be in.

Everything was going peaceful as she planned to get home.

"Would 'ya hurry up?! Fuckin' animal..!" A loud male voice yelled in anger. A loud thump then followed after. No one really paid attention since they just focused on crossing the road.

The white haired girl stopped and turned around, only to be greeted by an ugly sight. The person that she was previously seated with at the cafe was on the ground. Two men carrying bottles of alchohol stood beside him. The small creature's face was barely seen as his head faced towards the floor.

The two men were probably drunk, seeing the way they act and the bottles in their hands. Many people just walked past them, not giving a shit whatsoever.

Well, this is the harsh truth about society.

Lily was sickened. No one should be treated like that.

No one.

She couldn't just stand there and do nothing.

She then made her way over to help the poor creature until she heard loud horns.

Loud horns...

She turned to the source of the loud sound. Her eyes widened as she saw a truck that was speeding towards the both of them.

Her heartbeat sped up,

as well as her feet did.

She threw her bags on the other side of the road.

She panicked, her feet just started moving on their own, she didn't know what to do.

There was only one thing she can do, and it is to use her quirk.

A notebook magically appeared in her hand as she quickly took her pen out of her pocket. She opened her notebook and flipped to a random page since it didn't really matter. She wrote in it as fast as she could.

The small creature can barely move. The truck was very near.

Lily's feet stopped in front of the small male before a giant and heavy metal shield summoned in front of the girl. The shield's pattern was randomized but heavy enough to stop the truck.

The shield was so heavy that she couldn't even pick it up. She created it, hoping that it would protect them from the vehicle.

Then, the time came.

The truck was right in front of them. The white haired girl braced for impact.

Honestly, what is she doing?

She took risks rather than seeing someone hurt, or even worse, die in front of her eyes, especially when she can reach them.

The vehicle collided with the giant heavy shield, making it screech to a halt. The shield was so heavy that it didn't move.

'Am..am I...alive..?'

The wheels of the truck finally stopped resulting the girl and the small creature to be unharmed.

Lily let out a large sigh as she placed a hand over her chest. Her heart was beating so loudly, she felt like it was gonna jump out of her chest.

She looked back at the small creature that was still on the floor. She kneeled down and picked him up before quickly heading off to the sidewalk.

She then gently placed him down on the floor, kneeling down to his height.

"You're alright now." She placed her warm hand on his head before giving a few pats, reassuring him that it's fine now. Her voice was rather gentle and soothing.

She suddenly heard a sharp noise. Then there was another. Until the number grew.

She looked up and saw people around her. That sharp noise was actually a clap. People were clapping. They were clapping around the both of them.

Lily was surprised by the sudden attention she got. Her mind went blank, not knowing what exactly to do in this situation.

"That was quite brave little missy!" An old woman exclaimed as she stood with many other people.

"What a hero!"

"Give her a jacket!"

The white haired girl averted her eyes in a shy manner. "I-er..t-than-- umm.." she tried speaking, but it ended up in failure.

"You truly are quite something." The small creature suddenly spoke as he stood up. He dusted his pants and bowed in front of her.

"I'm really sorry for what I have caused." He apologized.

"Um..excuse me.." a man from the crowd suddenly spoke as he scratched his head sheepishly. "Hi um, I was actually the one driving the truck.."

The two faced the man. "Erm, sorry for the little incident. You see, my sight ain't that clear nowadays.." he bowed.

"I do have a wrong in this as well, sir. If I had moved quickly enough, then this mess wouldn't have happened." Nezu smiled at the man.

The man looked up. "So, who's getting rid of the..big thing on the road." He asked, pointing a finger to the giant shield that Lily made.

"Hey look, it's Death Arms!" The crowd suddenly switched their attention to the pro hero that conveniently showed up. Most of the people that were surrounding them rushed over to see the hero in action, while the others went back to their previous tasks. All that was left were the two.

"Thank you very much for your bravery tonight." The little creature gave her a smile. "O-Of course.. I-I couldn't just s-stand there." Lily grabbed her bags before standing up. When she stood up, her body started shaking.

He gave out a small chuckle. "Would you care to join me for some tea in return sometime?" He asked.

The girl just blinked a few times, trying to process what just happened.

This was the first time someone else invited her to something, so she didn't exactly know how to react.

After a moment of thinking, she gave a hesitant nod of approval. His eyes lightened up as his smile widened. He then gave her a piece of paper that contained his number.

"Please call me Nezu. And if you are quite confused, I'm not human." Lily nodded at the information, safely tucking his number in her bag. "I must head back now, it was a pleasure meeting you, Nezu." She said as she bowed like a servant in respect.

"Likewise, miss Yane. I'm looking forward to our next meeting." He said while waving his paw as he headed to the place he needed to be.

The white haired girl then headed home in a somewhat better mood than usual.

'You see father, I can be a hero.'

For once, she did something right in her life. She thought.
