《One For Three》27 - Princess

The wish didn't take place until after a few months.

Vera, or Eve as Sonia lovingly called (and known) her, talked with the young, bright child daily. Apparently, Sonia was an outcast in the orphanage, and she had nothing to talk to aside from Vera. Because of this, Vera was almost tempted to curse them out of contempt, yet she had no ability to do so. All she could do was comfort the child when needed, and provide the friendship, love and care the child deserved.

There were close calls, too. One time, they were talking about Sonia's favorite animal, which happened to be similar to Vera's, the butterfly. They were too engrossed with the story that they did not notice that a young, yet taller child from the orphanage snooped in on their conversation.

---

"What are you doing, you midget?"

"I'm not a midget!"

"You are!"

"Am not!"

The taller child swooped the mirror from Sonia's grasp. He looked within the mirror, meeting Vera's eyes. There was a hint of confusion on the child's eyes, as he saw nothing but his reflection. He raised it up, looked at Sonia, and jeered, "Aw, have you gone loony? You're even talking to the mirror now!"

Vera listened, confused at the child's words. 'How come did he not see me? The observation pane is still open, I haven't cut it off yet. I can even see and hear what's happening.' This was partially true, as the observation pane showed dizzying images as the child holding the mirror was moving a lot.

"Give it back!"

"Get it first from me!"

"I said give it back!"

Vera just listened in horror as the image on the pane was not clear. She listened to Sonia's struggles as the child, the tormentor, taunted and bullied her. She wanted to curse the child, to tell him to stop, yet she couldn't do anything. She closed her eyes and willed herself to ignore it, even in her stomach churned at what she was doing.

'Turning a blind eye, Vera? You're so lame.'

"No! What have you done!" Vera panicked and her eyes opened wide. She saw Sonia's crying face, as if she was holding the mirror in front of her.

"I've done nothing!" Loud footsteps that grew softer over time was heard. Vera assumed the bully was running away. Vera focused on the crying girl in front of her.

"Shh, don't cry anymore, Sonia. I'm still here, aren't I?"

"I-I thought the mirror was shattered broken, and that I would lose you..."

"That won't happen. I'll be with you, you dummy!"

---

Now, they were on Sonia's room in the orphanage. It wasn't much, yet it provided a safe haven for them to talk freely without anyone finding out.

As they were talking, the door creaked, revealing the caretaker of the orphanage.

"Sonia, come downstairs. There's someone who wants to talk with you. Pack your belongings, too, if you have any."

Sonia nodded, and looked at the mirror once more. She looked confused. "Looks like I've got to go for now."

"Okay. I'll keep the connection open, though. You won't mind me listening, don't you?"

Sonia stared at her, abashed. "Of course not! You're my friend! My best friend!"

Her heart warmed up at Sonia's words.

---

The man asking for her was apparently the chief knight of the royal palace. He just asked for her name, her mother's name, and the locket. After confirming it all, the knight asked her to follow him and ride the carriage. Sonia was very anxious, as she did not know what was about to happen.

All of her worries were crushed as soon as she stepped inside the palace's throne room. A maid took all of her belongings and stood beside her, fortunately holding the front of the mirror in a way that allowed Vera to see what was happening.

"Sonia...?" The king's voice quivered as he spoke.

"Your highness." Sonia did a curtsy, just like how her mother taught her when she was younger. She bowed her head and avoided looking at his eyes as a sign of respect. Her knees shook and trembled in fear.

"Sonia... Is that you...?" Vera noticed that the king was acting weird, as if he couldn't believe what was happening. Sonia was oblivious to the king's actions that are unbefitting of a king. The king stood and approached Sonia, whose eyes were downcast. He wobbled on his way, until his knees finally gave out before Sonia.

"Your highness!" Sonia crouched down, panicking over the king's state. "What happened? Are you---"

The king hugged her tightly, his chin resting on her shoulders. "Sonia..." Sonia was confused, and sought the face of the king. She felt the trembling hands and body of the king, and saw tears fall down from his eyes. She only became more confused.

"Your... highness..."

"Sonia, my child..."

"Your... child?" Sonia was dumbfounded.

The king continued as if he did not hear her. "I never thought I would see you again... I thought you were gone, out of reach from my hands forever, when Vanessa, your mother, the woman I loved, disappeared..."

Sonia went catatonic. "What...?" Then she fainted.

The king went panicking. "Guards! Call for the doctor, quick!" He went over his child and clutched her tightly. "No! I can't lose you, too!"

---

After that, Sonia was declared as the crowned princess of the kingdom. She couldn't believe what happened. She just wanted to find her father, yet it made her a princess. Of course, she was ecstatic, and made it apparent to Vera.

"Eve! I can't believe this!" Tears trickled down from her puffy eyes. "I just found my father and became a princess! I've never been so happy!"

"Why?" asked Vera. "You deserve all of this, you know? After all you are a sunshine child!" Vera pretended to be hurt. "And don't you believe in my magic, huh?"

"N-no!" Sonia averted her eyes from the mirror. "I'm just... overwhelmed with this..."

"Don't be," said Vera with firmness. She let out a soft smile. "After all, you still got two wishes?"

Her mouth opened wide in realization. "Eh? I forgot!" Her emerald eyes glimmered with wonder. "Does it mean that... you still could do two amazing things?"

"Yes, of course. Just mean it with your heart and I'll do the rest. You deserve it all, after all." Vera took on a teasing tone. "And granted that you won't leave me."

Sonia looked aghast. "Of course I won't! You're my best friend!" Her complexion flushed, and shied away from Vera. "If you consider me as friend..."

Her heart fluttered in glee. "Of course you are. Don't doubt that. And I won't leave you, too, as long as you want me by your side.

---

Sonia enjoyed being a princess, and being with her father. However, being a princess also took a toll from her. Wanting to make her father proud, she drastically cut her free time to study everything expected from a princess. Her slouching and unconfident posture was gone and replaced by a poised and elegant one. However, she somewhat felt still alone as she only saw her father a few times in a week due to his kingly duties. The people in the castle, all the maids, servants, and knights, was too respectful and distant for her liking. It made her feel isolated.

She still had Vera, or Eve, though. Her meetings with Vera became shorter, as the role of being the princess took a lot of time from Sonia. She looked apologetic, but Vera understood it and waited patiently for her. This did not deter them from strengthening their bond over the years.

---

Vera watched Sonia plop down on her queen-size bed. She had a tired and annoyed expression on her face. She groaned in exasperation, and looked at Vera with a pout on her face.

"Eve! Save me!"

"Hmm...?"

"It's so tiring! They've been nagging at me about the upcoming feast! And the chambermaids – they're too stiff! They don't even talk at me! I..."

"What is it, Sonia?" Vera's fairy godmother senses tingled. 'Is this another wish?'

"I... I just want to have someone as a friend..."

"I am still here, Sonia...."

"I know!" Vera was shook at her outburst. "But I just want someone to be here with me... Not just anyone... I want you to be here with me!"

"W-what?"

Sonia closed her eyes in sorrow. "I wish you were here with me, my best friend..."

'This is it,' Vera waved her fingers, light trailing after it. She felt her magic within her shift and change. Her vision was getting hazy...

"Eve? Eve!"

She tried opening her eyes, yet a wave of nausea and drowsiness crashed against her... Before she lost consciousness, she managed to utter, "Don't worry... Son... ia..."
