《A Dangerous Game》Chapter 41

Walking up the front steps of the War Office, Mila paused at the double doors. Grasping the purse draped over her shoulder, she traced the outline of her gun inside the bag. Slipping her opposite hand inside the pocket of her dress, she felt for the cylindrical tube that held the cyanide pills Harvey had given her. Turning it over with her fingers, she traced the etching on the side of the tube, going over the plan in her head one last time.

The ballroom would be filled to the brim with dinner guests there to celebrate Heinrich Muller's arrival. He was going to pay for everything he'd done to her, and so many other innocent people ... And he was going to pay tonight. Pushing open the door, she walked inside, the soft hum of music playing in the distance instantly filling her ears. She was going to kill him and he'd never see it coming. Of course everyone else in attendance would know what she'd done ... There was no real way to hide shooting someone in the middle of a dinner party ... But that's what the cyanide was for.

Her heels clicked against the hardwood as she made her way down the hallway leading to the ballroom. Turning a corner, a hand grasped her arm without warning, tugging her backwards roughly.

"What are you doing here?" Josef hissed, pushing her inside his office and closing the door behind him.

Clutching her bag instinctively, she pushed it behind her. His eyes darted from hers to the bag, narrowing in suspicion. Taking a step towards her, he snatched the purse, yanking it from her grasp before she could pull away. Opening the clasp he rummaged inside, his jaw clenching as his hand grasped the gun she'd stowed inside.

"Why are you here?" He asked again. Half cocking the hammer, he opened the cylinder, removing each bullet from the cartridge of her revolver. Pocketing the ammunition, he tossed the gun onto the armchair in the corner of the room. "I told you to leave ... Go to your people and tell them to get you out!"

"I can't leave!" She hissed back at him through gritted teeth. "My handlers were arrested ... I have no-one ... And nowhere to go ... It's over."

"Why did you come here?" He glared at her suspiciously. She blinked away, her eyes falling on a single scrap of paper lying on Josef's desk ... A paper identical to the one she'd crumpled up yesterday. Josef's gaze followed her's, settling on the invitation. "Mila..." He trailed off, realization dawning on his face, as he began to connect the dots. Glancing between the invitation and the gun, his eyes fell back on her. "This is a suicide mission."

"He killed my father and brother," She shot back indignantly, dropping all pretenses now. "It was him! He pulled the trigger!"

"You can't really believe you'd even come remotely close to getting a shot off?" He shook his head in disbelief. "The moment you pulled out that gun, they'd be on you before you could even cock the hammer."

"What if I had no intentions of leaving that room alive?" She asked flatly, ignoring the mixture of surprise and pain the question had marred Josef's expression with.

"You think they'd kill you?" He scoffed. "They don't kill assassins," He shook his head. "You would wish for death after the things they did."

"He's killed millions of innocent people," She shot back, ignoring his objections. "He deserves to die!"

"That's not for you to decide," Josef argued, his voice rising slightly.

"People like him took everything from me," She said, matching his volume.

"They haven't taken everything from you Mila," He replied, more desperate than angry now. "You still have your life!"

"That's worthless to me now," She blinked away, shaking her head bitterly.

"Would your sister say the same?" He asked after silence had overtaken the room. "Do you think your life means that little to Gwen?" He pressed on, willing her to look at him. "You would rob her of the last piece of family she has left? For what? Some self-righteous quest for justice?"

"Gwen lost her sister a long time ago," She replied, defeated, tears burning her eyes as they threatened to brim over. "I am completely and totally alone," She shook her head, the hopelessness of her situation settling over her all over again. "And I can't do this alone," She added in a choked whisper, touching her stomach as a single tear slid down her cheek. Josef's eyes followed her hand, widening as realization hit him.

"Mila..." He began, his gaze traveling back up to meet her's. "Are you..." He trailed off, unable to finish the question.

She nodded, glancing away, unable to meet his eyes.

"How long have you known?" He asked breathlessly.

"Barely a week," She answered, stealing a glance in his direction. "I wanted to tell you..." She trailed off, squeezing her eyes shut to keep the tears at bay. "But-," She was cut off as Josef's lips found her's, his arms wrapping her body in a tight embrace. She melted against the familiar touch, locking eyes with him after he pulled away.

"I'm so sorry," She choked out, tears gliding down her cheeks. "I never meant for any of this to happen."

"I know," He nodded earnestly, clutching her face in his hands, wiping away the tears she'd cried with his thumbs. Suddenly, the phone rang, causing both of them to jump. "Wait here," He said, releasing her to answer the phone.

"Captain Fischer," He spoke into the receiver, after he'd picked it up. "What?" He asked the voice on the other end. "No ... I haven't seen her," He said, glancing in Mila's direction. "Of course ... I'll find her." Hanging up the phone, he turned towards Mila, a grim expression on his face. "They know."

"What?" She asked, backing away towards the door instinctively. This was it ... They'd figured out who she was.

"Mila wait," He said, reaching out a hand towards her. "Let me help you."

"How?"

"Meet me at the back entrance," He began, taking her hand in his. "Chances are, no-one here's heard the news yet ... There's still time to get out. If you run into anyone, act as you normally would, but don't linger in the corridor for too long. I'll pull my car around and pick you up, and we'll come up with a plan from there."

"Josef, I don't know..." She trailed off, her heart feeling as though it would beat out of her chest.

"Do you trust me?" He asked, staring into her eyes earnestly. She gazed back for a moment, contemplating his question.

"I do," She answered finally.

"Then I'll see you in ten minutes." Picking up the gun he'd discarded on the chair, he took out the bullets he'd stowed in his pocket and reloaded the chamber, extending her purse to her, with the gun concealed inside.

"Ten minutes," She nodded, taking the bag from him before turning for the door.

Once she'd exited his office, she turned down the hallway leading to the backdoor. She walked slowly, as calmly as she could, ignoring every instinct she had to run as fast as she could. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, she reaching the backdoor. Looking over her shoulder one last time, she pushed it open, entering into the frigid night air.

"Ms. Vanderwall," A voice called from behind her once she'd taken a few steps outside ... A familiar voice ... From the last person she'd wanted to see. Turning on her heel, she faced Lieutenant Hoffman. He was a few paces away from her, a pleasant expression on his face. She inhaled sharply, doing her best to return his smile.

"Hello Lieutenant," She spoke, nodding in his direction.

"Leaving the party so soon?" He asked, taking a few steps towards her.

"I'm afraid I'm not feeling well," She replied innocently, ignoring the thudding sound of her heartbeat within her ears. He gave no reply, but took another calculated step towards her. "It was lovely to see you," She lied, taking a step back. "I really should be going though," She continued, giving him one last fleeting smile as she turned on her heel. She had walked a few paces when a hand clasped over her mouth as an arm looped around her waist, holding her against the body they belonged to. She kicked and thrashed, trying to free herself from Lieutenant Hoffman's grasp. Suddenly, a splitting pain shot through her head, her body falling limp in his arms as darkness overtook her.
