《A Dangerous Game》Chapter 35

"Well I have to say," Josef began, rolling over on his back. "This was certainly preferable to my original plans for tonight."

"You mean your original plans didn't include this?" Mila smirked. Slipping her leg across his waist, she sat up until she was straddling him.

"Not quite," He said, returning her smirk. Sitting up, he grasped her waist, pulling her against his chest.

"What a horrible oversight," She shook her head in mock disbelief.

"Oh believe me," He began. Running his hands up and down her back, he leaned in until their noses were touching. "I know."

She pressed her lips against his in a fleeting kiss, before pulling away. "You seem more like yourself now," She said, resting her forehead against his.

"How so?" He asked, leaving a trail of kisses down her jaw, to her neck.

"You seemed so stressed before," She replied, tilting her head up to allow him access to her neck.

"I'm that transparent, huh?" Pulling away to look at her, he slipped a hand around to the nape of her neck, his fingers intertwined in her hair.

"It's the eyebrows ... They give you away," She said, tapping the space between his brows with her finger. "You get a little wrinkle right here."

"Well what about now?" He asked, leaning back so she could examine him properly.

"Not a wrinkle in sight," She grinned, wrapping her arms around his neck. She closed her eyes as his lips met her's, pressing her chest against his as they kissed. After a moment, she pulled away, swinging her leg around so that she was sitting on the bed again.

"Where are you going?" He asked, grabbing her hand as she climbed off the bed.

"If we don't eat now, we'll go to bed hungry," She replied, picking up Josef's discarded button-down from the floor and slipping it on.

"Would that really be so bad?" He smirked.

"I'll be back," She smiled. Buttoning the middle two buttons of the shirt, she turned around, giving him a quick peck on the lips before leaving the room.

Her bare feet padded against the hardwood as she made her way down the hall, to the kitchen. She was starving, but the time to cook an actual dinner had most definitely passed. Opening the fridge, she peered inside, her eyes scanning over the milk and eggs on the shelf. Closing the fridge, she opened the cabinet, rifling through the various canned vegetables, sacks of sugar and flour, and tea tins. Pulling out the fresh loaf of bread Josef had picked up from the bakery the previous day, and a jar of jam, she closed the cabinet. Grabbing a knife from the drawer, she opened the jam and cut two pieces from the loaf. Using the knife, she spread jam across each slice of bread, placing each of them on a plate.

Picking up the plates once she was done, she turned for the door when something caught her eye. Lying in the same spot he had tossed it, was the folder that contained Josef's report. Glancing over her shoulder at the empty hallway, her eyes darted back to the folder. Deciding to have a look, she glanced behind her one last time before sitting the plates down on the counter. Grabbing the folder, she opened it gingerly, thumbing through the pages as quietly as possible.

Each page had a different name typed across the heading. Lieutenant Hoffmann, Lieutenant Schneider, Captain Becker ... The report went on, including an extensive background and personal details for each person who'd been in attendance at the security briefings ... Every person except one. Mila.

Closing the folder, she placed it back down on the counter. She furrowed her brow ... Did he really not suspect her, or had he just not gotten around to making a file for her yet? Glancing down the hall, she shook the thoughts away. Now wasn't the time to worry about any of this. Josef was probably already wondering where she was ... She'd have to sort all of this out later. Picking up the plates from the counter, she turned and retreated back down the hallway.
