《Dark Roses #Wattys2019》Chapter 32

"Rose wakeup!" I heard Hanna shout. I sat straight up slowly from our lunch table that I was leaning on, and rubbed my eyes. I was wearing no makeup today, so I probably look even more dead than what I already am.
I wasn't able to get any sleep last night. I was constantly twisting and turning, thinking about what Blaire said to me, thinking about the little part of that night that I remembered.
I'm not capable of hurting anyone, I know I'm not, but who knows what could have happened. My emotions were all over the place, I was angry, hurt, intoxicated.
"I'm sorry guys.." I began to speak while pushing my hair out of my face.
"-I didn't get any sleep last night, at all." I finished.
This is all just one big nightmare.
"It's okay Rose, none of us did." Nina spoke. She honestly didn't look any better than I did at the moment, no one did.
I took a sip of water from my water bottle hoping to refresh myself, however, it didn't work.
"I don't understand why you didn't talk to us yesterday, nor answered the doorbell when we came over last night. Danny's parents and yours too said that you stormed out of their house, what happened?" Jackson questioned.
I froze for a little bit. All I could do is just look at them. For once Tia wasn't eating anything, and they all looked completely worried and nervous. How do I break it to them that they were right? How do I break it to them that I might have been involved in this?
I turned my attention towards the snowy courtyard. It looks so peaceful outside.
"Rose....what happened?" Nina questioned softly. I looked at her reflection through the window. They deserve to know this information.
I looked back over at everyone.
"I went to Blaire's house.....Danny said someone told him 'really observe someone's evilness'..that's what Blaire has said to Eli, to Andrew..."
Everyone's eyes began to widen.
I feel so disgusted.
"-When I talked to Blaire...and asked him what did he do to Danny..." It was hard to continue to speak. My heart was racing.
"-.....he said....'you mean what did we do to Danny'..guys....I don't know what happened that night...and...I want to believe I didn't do anything..but I remembered a part from it..."

"Oh my gosh.." Tia spoke clenching onto her stomach.
"-...I don't know what to do...I don't know what to say...I just...remember Blaire telling me 'Rose, we have to finish the job now'...we were outside...it was freezing...and I was laying in the snow..puking..."
"Whose house were you in front of Rose?"' Nina interrupted.
I closed my eyes trying to remember.
The only thing I could see, is the night sky, and the stars shining brightly next to the moon.
"I can't remember.." I spoke still closing my eyes.
I then opened them, realizing that nothing will happen.
"Don't listen to him Rose, he's probably just playing tricks on you. Who knows what could have happened. You may have been out of it, but you're not that out of it." Hanna said.
"She said she would kill him... at the party! What if you acted out on it Rose? What if someone uses that against you who heard you at the party?!" Jackson shouted.
I looked down.
"When I dropped Danny off at home, I saw your parents car in the driveway, and that was around 12am....they wouldn't have allowed Blaire to be over that late, and they would have checked on you as well. You couldn't have done anything to Danny, Rose, it's all just a mind game." Nina spoke. I could tell she was trying to contain all of her emotions at the moment.
Then what did I do? I remember being outside. Why would Blaire have said that to me outside? Why was I even outside?
Everyone looked at each other. We didn't know what to do next, what to say...nothing.
I just pray that Danny is okay. The police have been in and out of our school like crazy, questioning everyone Danny is friends with, even enemies.
The male officer clenched onto the clipboard he was holding, and leaned forward.
"I can tell you're holding something back from me." He spoke deeply. Everything about him was absolutely intimidating. And it was hard for me to remain calm.
Just tell him Rose, tell him about Blaire!
But what if I really am involved in this situation? This would all go downhill, this would ruin the rest of my life.

I fidgeted with my finger tips for a second, and then looked directly at the officer with a straight face.
"I have nothing else to say."
"I don't know what it's called...but if you don't remember what happened a night lets say you were drunk, usually seeing certain objects or people will give you flashbacks of that night." Hanna said.
I looked down at the table.
"I just.......I don't know what to think right now you guys.."
"Maybe we can solve this and rescue Danny ourselves. He has to be alive still, right?." Tia questioned.
"The last time someone went missing, they were found dead.." Jackson spoke referring to Allison.
I looked over at the empty seat Danny would have currently been sitting in, if he was here.
Blaire was carrying a baseball bat late at night, I forgot to mention that to everyone, as well ask Blaire about it. You could kill someone with a baseball bat, only if you know where to hit them with it, and how harshly to do it.
"What are you thinking about now Rose?" Tia questioned realizing me staring at Danny's seat.
I focused my attention towards them.
"I.....I just remembered-"
"-spit it out Rose!" Hanna shouted. They were all getting frustrated with me. I could have been addressed this situation, but I chose not to do to the concern of my own safety.
"-the night before everyone pronounced that Danny was missing, I saw Blaire carrying a bat walking inside of his house. It was around 1 am..."
"Did it have any blood on it?" Nina interrupted.
"-no it was dark but-"
"-Have you even told the police about this? About ANY of this stuff?! Blaire is a fucking suspect and you have all of this information that he could go under evaluation for!" She continued.
"-do you even care about Danny being missing? Because it seems like you're trying to protect Blaire, or yourself!"
"-I'm not trying to protect Blaire! This is about me! I'm trying to save my own ass and understand what happened before I take this to the police! Okay?! Of course I care about Danny, but who knows if I did something! I was underage drinking, and drugged by whatever the hell Jackson gave to me!"
Everyone looked at Jackson, he held his hands up.
"You guys keep on telling me that I didn't do anything, but no one knows that for sure!...you...you guys just can't tell anyone ANYTHING right now, please. Please just let me think about this. This is affecting me just as much as you guys. Obviously I was taken advantage of...but what if I wasn't? What if I openly chose to do something but forgot? What if I'm turning just as crazy...." I finished.
I looked down at my hands viewing my left wrist. It had the name Michael cut onto it.
I pulled my sleeve down more.
"I just know that the moment I see Blaire-" right then Nina stopped speaking. Something, or someone, caught her attention. I followed the direction of where her eyes were looking at, only to see Blaire walking into the lunch room.
I froze.
Before I knew it, Nina was already speed walking over to him. Tia, Danny, and Hanna got up rushing after her.
I was only able to stand up infront of my seat.
Suddenly, the whole lunchroom went quiet as Nina grabbed a hold of Blaire by his shirt collar.
"I WILL FUCKING RUIN YOUR LIFE IF IT'S PROVEN THAT YOU DID SOMETHING TO DANNY!" She yelled.
Blaire slowly, and evilly, smiled.
"DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?! HUH?!" Jackson and Tia both grabbed a hold of her, and began to pull her away from Blaire.
I guess the administrators and a few policemen were standing nearby, because they rushed into the lunchroom, and helped hold Nina back standing by Blaire as well.
They must already be keeping a close eye on him, they probably just got done questioning him. It would explain why he walked into the lunchroom so late.
Tears began to rush out of Nina's eyes.
"He did something to Danny...he.." Nina then completely broke down crying, hugging Tia, Hanna, and Jackson all at once.
All I could do was just stand there. All as I came into contact with a pair of haunted, sharp, and piercing blue eyes from a distance.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
