《Dark Roses #Wattys2019》Chapter 16

A couple of days have passed by, and now it's Friday. What happened Tuesday after school still has me absolutely frightened, and kept me really from interacting with him. Whenever I see him at lunch I'll say hi, but I've restrained from having full out conversations with him, I'm just trying to understand it all, but I cant.
"Rose, you okay?" I heard Nina question me. We were all currently at lunch. I stopped playing with my food and looked up at the courtyard. It's finally November, and soon it'll be snowing. Besides Fall, Winter is also another one of my favorite seasons.
"Yeah, I've just been stressed with school I guess." I responded not breaking my eye contact with the outside. If I look at her, she'll know I'm lying.
"Bullshit, what's really wrong Rose?."
How did she know I was lying?
I took a deep breath, and looked at her and everyone else. Should I tell them about Blaire? I feel like it would be out of my place if I did, but I really need someone to talk to about this. People I trust.
I looked over at Blaire's table, and he wasn't there.
"You guys promise not to tell anyone?" I spoke looking back at them. They all nodded their heads.
"I hung out with Blaire Tuesday after school, and um, I discovered a lot of pill bottles in his room, all for certain mental illnesses.."
Everyone seemed not too surprised, but the expressions on their faces somewhat read disbelief.
"We all did say that boy was crazy." Tia said sticking a fry in her mouth.
"I didn't say that, I mostly said I don't know, because none of us did. We were all so quick to judge based off of the rumors we've heard about him. We've never really had an interaction with him......what type of illnesses are we talking about here Rose?" Nina questioned. I didn't even have to try to remember what type of illnesses those pills were for, because they're at the front of my mind.
"Bipolar disorder.....psychosis......."
"Psychosis?! Um shouldn't he have a grownup looking over him at school because of that? I mean we're talking about delusions here, hallucinations!.....this...he's definitely capable of killing Allison." Hanna spoke furiously.
"I don't know, but....he's a really nice kid, despite what happened and what I now know. When he saw that I was holding his pill bottles he completely just...turned into a different human being than what I've been exposed to. Throwing a vase in his room...punching the wall. Yes I can say I was scared, and ever since I have kept my distance because I'm still a little shaken up...but he was only angry for about two minutes or less. I don't want to just suddenly ignore him because...... everyone else is too scared to even talk to him. He's alone with no one to understand him."

I saw Hanna roll her eyes, and Tia continued to eat her fries. Jackson then began to open his mouth.
"Who's to say Allison didn't get him angry? I mean, you experienced a front row seat of how destructive he can get. He could have lashed out on her too. Well at least now it seems more possible that he did."
It does seem more possible.
The day went by pretty quickly. In culinary arts, Jackson of course burnt one of the waffles we all had to make, and again, started a fire. I was absolutely soaked from when the sprinklers went off in the class, and I'm stuck wondering how this kid isn't kicked out of the class yet.
However, now I'm currently on my way home with Danny.
"How does someone burn a waffle? The waffle maker literally turns green when it's done." Danny laughed focusing on the road.
"Dude, this isn't just 'someone' we're talking about, this is Jackson." I laughed right back.
"That's true."
We eventually arrived to our houses, and Danny decided to just come over since my mom is cooking dinner for us and his family tonight. I think she's making tacos, so we're both pretty excited.
"Im going to go change into a pair of dry clothes, you can go grab a bite to eat in the kitchen or watch t.v in the family room. Up to you." I spoke as we walked into my house. I then began to walk up the stairs.
"Sweet." I heard Danny say as he of course disappeared into the kitchen. I'll be lucky if there's anything left for me to eat down there once I get done changing.
When I reached my room, I quickly went to my dresser searching for bedclothes. I ended up pulling out a hoodie and sweatpants. Something comfy, and just right for this weather. Once that was done and over with, I looked at my phone and began to respond to a few messages from Stacey and those guys. Normally our conversations were hilarious, but maybe about once a week someone will bring up Andrew. We're all trying to put the puzzle pieces together, but we're missing a lot.
Out of nowhere the doorbell rung.
"I'll get it." I heard Danny say.
"Thanks." I responded loudly. I quickly finished up a few texts, and then put my phone down so I could see who was at the door.

When I exited the room and reached the top of the stairs, I looked at the doorway and recognized a familiar face.
Anna, Blaire's mom.
The way she was speaking to Danny sounded like she was angry, and worried about something. I wonder if something happened to Blaire.
As I began to walk down the stairs, Anna looked up from Danny to me.
"Rose." She spoke in a worried but harsh tone. I finally reached downstairs and stood next to Danny. I looked at him, and then at Anna.
"Hello, Ann-"
"I thought I warned you to stay away from my son. What don't you understand." She said cutting me off. She then looked behind her, and then back at me. I understand what she's so scared of now.
I saw Danny begin to step back, and then walk away towards the kitchen. He probably thought it wasn't appropriate to be around during this conversation, but he'll probably still be able to hear it.
I took a deep breath.
"Anna, I understand why you don't want me around him. I found out about his illnesses.......it makes me scared but I don't want to upset him even more by not talking to him." I said putting my hands into the front pouch of my hoodie. It was chilly outside, and I would have invited her inside, but it doesn't seem like she wants to have a calm chat over chips and soda.
"He's dangerous. This isn't about him, this is about you. He's capable of doing a lot of things, and if you don't leave him alone right now......." She began to quiet herself at the end, and went silent. She whispered something to herself looking as if she was about to cry, and put her hand to her mouth, but I wasn't able to hear what she said.
Even his own mother thinks he's capable of doing something that could cause harm to me, or anyone. Does she think he..killed Allison?
I looked at her wanting to understand more.
"Anna, do you think...Blaire is a killer?" I questioned. She slowly looked up at me pulling her hand away from her mouth.
"Your family made a mistake moving to this house. No matter what my son tries to do to get you to talk to him, don't talk to him. Stay away from him. Do you understand me clearly Rose?!" She shouted putting both of her hands on my shoulders. I looked at her in fear.
"Y..yes.." I responded. She took her hands away from me, and turned around. There Blaire was standing in their dark doorway looking at us both. Anna's mood instantly changed.
"I'm coming." She smiled and said loudly at him. He smiled back, and I looked at him waving. I gave a short wave back, and a fake smile.
Anna turned around, and looked at me.
"Follow those rules like they're the 10 commandments." She whispered.
With that, she began to walk back to her house. That's when I quickly shut the door, and locked it. I sort of stood there for a moment trying to process everything that just happened.
I'm going to keep my distance from Blaire.
I then walked to the kitchen, seeing Danny eating freshly popped popcorn.
"What was that all about?" Danny questioned as I poured myself a glass of water from the dispenser.
"Um, I don't know...just me staying away from Blaire." I waited until the water reached the tip of the cup. I then took a few sips from it.
Blaire's mom was in her 60's or early 70's. Maybe she suffers from a few complications as well, and was just talking crazy to me, but I think she's telling the truth and actually is worried.
"Maybe you should listen." Danny spoke stuffing a handful of popcorn in his mouth. I listened to him crunch on it as I got lost in my thoughts.
I will.

The Infinite Labyrinth
(Story complete - Book 1 "Shanghaied", 2 "Shortcuts", 3 "Secrets" and 4 "Sanctions") It is the 19th century, and war smoulders between England and France. Any hope for a quick end to Napoleon's rampage across Europe ended when the Great Gates opened in 1800. For a fortunate few, the strange world of the Infinite Labyrinth offers opportunities, strange descriptors popping in their minds, informing them of growth, and status beyond that of a mere mortal. The materials and power crystal they bring back foster a new age, both military and civilian. Aether-powered Skyships prowl the skies, as all the great nations blessed by the Gates try to turn the blessings of the Labyrinth into immediate advantages. But for Jonas, an apprentice leatherworker, his friend Ira, and so many Londoners, the fabled ones that walk the Labyrinth are distant heroes, seen from afar. They fell short when their Potential was measured, and they fill their mundane lives with distant dreams. One man wants to break the stalemate. The Tyrant of the Dominion of France, Napoleon Bonaparte, has a plan. Eighteen years after the world changed, he will force it to change again. And when civilians are caught in the fallout, the unthinkable happens. Six people, unqualified, forbidden to ever enter the Labyrinth, find themselves stranded in a distant zone, forcefully turned into Professionals. They know little of what that means, but they have to figure out the rules that are now their lot, for they have little hope to escape their predicament otherwise. They need to understand what the descriptors in their minds mean, what each of the strange piece of gear waiting in treasure chests behind terrible guardians can bring them. They have to become Professionals on their own and rejoin the Empire. They will figure out their new lives one way or another. But will there be an Empire waiting for them when the Gates re-open? Caught in a clash of empires and high tiers, they will do what little they can. They will step up and do their best. One way or another. The Infinite Labyrinth is a slice-of-life litRPG adventure set in a real historical setting. It's a hard, crunchy litrpg. Expect blue boxes everywhere, and the system itself is very mathy. It started life as a serial. I prepared some proper worldbuilding, with enough details and background for lots of different potential story arcs, but as I wrote, I realized the main story needs to have a definitive end. So, there are four books in total, for a bit under 1500 pages, plus additional side stories, and even maybe a sequel one day. The Gore tag was added as a precaution because there are a few scenes with some light gore.
