《Dark Roses #Wattys2019》Chapter 5

Today is my fifth day at this new school, and I can honestly say the week has flown by pretty fast. At first thinking my classes were easy, the teachers finally decided to load me with homework and assignments that I of course, do not want to do. Considering that it's senior year, I should have just chosen blowoff classes to take, but I couldn't considering the fact that I want to get into Northwestern University.

Right now I am currently in AP calc with Nina, we sit right next to each other. I have no idea what the teacher is talking about since she's not writing it all out on the board.

I am a visual learner, so it kind of sucks when I have to read directions, or hear what I have to do. I know I'm capable of getting through this class with a high B though, maybe A if I really try hard.

I looked at Nina trying to read her facial expressions to see if she knew what was going on, or if she was clueless just like me. It seemed as if she understood, but also had to be shown visually on the board how to do it.

I then looked at the clock to see what time it was, and surprisingly the bell was just about to ring in a couple of seconds. As the teacher rushed to get a few last words in that we could write down, she was interrupted by the bell and I saw a lot of faces turn into relief.

"I didn't understand that one bit," I laughed to Nina as we walked out of the classroom to head to lunch. Danny wasn't here to walk with us today because I guess he had to grab something from his locker really quickly.

"I understand how you feel, I mean it's whatever though, I'll probably just look in the math book to see if there are any pictures explaining how to do that type of problem," Nina responded. She then started to say her daily "hi"'s to people she came across in the hallway. She claims that the only friends she has are us, but I beg to differ.

When we finally arrived at the cafeteria we walked to our lunch table. Tia and Hanna went to go get lunch, while Danny and Jackson were eating the lunches they brought from home. They looked absolutely delicious.

I still think Danny's mom is a stay at home mom.

"Did your mom pack that for you?" Nina spoke sitting down across from Danny. I laughed taking a seat next to where I assumed Tia's seat was.

"Good morning to you too beautiful," he spoke taking a bite out of his mouth watering sandwich. I know it's only been a few days, but I definitely detect them liking eachother.

Nina reached into her purse pulling out money for the lunch food in the food court.

"It's the afternoon, not the morning, and it actually looks really good. You should tell her to pack me one too everyday. She loves me enough anyways," she then turned and faced me.

"You getting lunch?" Nina questioned getting up. I shook my head no.

"Eh, I'm not that hungry right now, maybe later. I had a big breakfast this morning," I spoke patting my still stuffed stomach. I swear my parents are trying to make me obese.

Nina laughed, and then went up to get lunch. She's probably going to walk back with Tia, and Hanna.

I looked at Danny and Jackson wanting to talk to them, but I saw that they were gossiping about how some girl got caught blowing a guy in the school bathroom.

That's when I heard something fall to the floor.

"Get the fuck up you freak," I heard a deep voice say. I tried looking for where I heard that voice coming from, and when I spotted who was speaking, I saw Blaire lying on the floor clutching onto his glasses.

Three guys were surrounding him.

I automatically stood up realizing that Blaire was getting bullied, and there was absolutely no one standing up for him.

The guys began to throw food at and on Blaire one by one.

"Rose sit down what are you doing?" Jackson questioned tugging on the sleeve of my sweater. I looked at him.

"Blaire is getting bullied, someone has to help him out! I thought the people at this school were actually nice?!" I stated.

"Wait Rose don-" before Danny could finish his sentence, I already walked away from the table and started heading to where Blaire laid. When I arrived, I laid on the ground making sure Blaire was okay. He just stared at me with his sharp blue eyes.

There were all different types of milks and juices poured onto his head, along with today's special chili cheese fries.

I then looked up at the three jerks with absolute disgust, and stood up.

What I was doing seemed as if it was a taboo at this school. The whole entire lunchroom went silent, and all eyes were on us.

"Who the hell do you guys think you are? Don't you have something better to do than fucking humiliate someone during lunch? How pathetic. This doesn't make any of you look good, just worst than what you actually are." I spoke giving Blaire a helping hand to stand up. He was hesitant at first, but then accepted it. I gave him a small smile, and then looked back at the jerks to see what their explanations were.

"Hey, you're helping out a cold blooded killer right now. You better watch it new girl," one spoke walking close to me. I slapped him across the face.

"Killer or not, you don't treat someone like this, especially during school you assholes," I could tell the whole entire lunchroom still had their eyes on us, and people were recording the situation.

I was used to the attention though, especially at my old school.

The three jerks seemed shocked along with the rest of the lunchroom. The one I just slapped was still clutching his cheek, and was looking at me in anger. He was tall, had tan skin, brown hair, and beautiful brown eyes. It's ashamed how someone could be so physically attractive on the outside, but so ugly on the inside.

"Jay lets just go," one of his buddies spoke. "Jay" then started to back up, and walk away.

"Maybe he'll get you next, and I definitely wont feel bad about that. Blaire witch, this isn't over," Jay spoke throwing one last empty milk cup at Blaire.

After a couple of minutes, the whole lunchroom then went back to normal. I looked back at my table seeing Danny, Jackson, Nina, Tia, and Hanna all staring at me in shock. Not because of what I did,

but who I'm with.

I turned back around looking at Blaire, he was currently wiping his glasses off that were stained with dried up milk.

"Here let me get that for you," I spoke taking a tissue out of my little cross body purse I was wearing today. I had him hand me his glasses as I poured some water on them, and wiped them off with the tissue. Things were still kind of smudged, but they'll still do.

I handed his glasses back to him, and he put them on, smiling at me a little bit. However, the smile slowly disappeared.

He went to his table grabbing his stuff beginning to walk away, but suddenly a voice left my mouth.

"Wait!" I spoke walking to him. He stopped walking, and turned around.

"Hi, I'm Rose," I said holding a hand out for him to shake.

He accepted it.

"Blaire," He responded looking at me in the eyes. His eyes were absolutely hypnotizing.

"I know what it's like to get accused of something you didn't do. Don't listen to those jerks, and don't let them bully you around either," I said sincerely. He looked down at the floor, and then back up at me. I happened to notice him holding onto his notebook pretty hard.

"Thank you," Were his final words to me before walking away. I sort of just stood there for a couple of seconds, before turning away and walking back to my table.

When I finally got to my table and sat down, everyone looked at me.

No one said anything at first, but then Tia decided to speak.

"I have one word for you..." Tia questioned eating her french fries.

"...why?"

The day was finally over.

All day today I was questioned by everyone in my class asking why I stood up for the "killer", and Tia had a long talk with me in English, while Jackson had a long talk with me in culinary arts.

They were both upset about my actions, although I was impressed.

Right now I was in the car with Danny getting a series of questions from him.

We were on our way home.

"How many times do we have to warn you to stay away from him?" Danny questioned parking the car on the street between both of our houses.

He was talking to me like he was my dad.

"The poor kid was getting bullied, I was the only kind and understanding individual to stand up for him," I responded getting out of the car.

"He's dangerous Rose!" Danny shouted as I walked away. I rolled my eyes.

When I finally entered in my house, my mom was home early. The house smelt of blueberry pie.

I smiled with delight, and started to walk into the kitchen.

When I arrived I saw my mom pulling a fresh blueberry pie out of the oven.

"Another one?" I questioned washing my hands. My mom looked up at me in shock.

"Damn Rose you scared me, I didn't hear you come in," She laughed holding onto her chest.

"-and no, not another one. I made this for the lady across the street. Maybe you could bring it to her for me? I'm about to go in to get more training." My mom continued placing the pie on the cooling rack.

"Sure," I responded even though I'm sort of weirded out by the lady, and her house.

My mom smiled and then started to walk out of the kitchen, but stopped in the door way and turned around, "how was school today?"

I shrugged.

"Different"

After my mom left for work, I wrapped the pie and started heading out the front door. When I closed the door, I stood on our porch looking at the house in front of me.

It seemed haunted, and just really didn't fit into this neighborhood. However, I shrugged it off and began to walk across the street to the house.

There seemed to be someone upstairs.

When I arrived, I nervously rung the doorbell. It felt as if I was in a movie, and at a dungeon.

No one answered for like 20 seconds though, so I rung it again, but still..no answer. I know I should have just given up after my second try, but I swear I saw the old lady upstairs.

I began to reach towards the doorbell on my last try, but then someone opened the door.

"Blaire?" I spoke shocked. He seemed nervous. Danny never told me Blaire lived right across the street from us, no one did, not even his own mom.

There was opera music quietly playing in the background.

"Hey Rose," He said shyly. He didn't have the door opened all the way, he was sort of halfway peeping out of it.

"I, um, I didn't know you lived across the street from me," I laughed in a "what the hell?" way.

"Yeah," he responded. There was an awkward moment of silence.

"So yeah um, my mom made a blueberry pie for your mom, she said it was her favorite." I smiled.

"Yeah, it is" Blaire smiled back.

Okay, this is awkward.

"So...is your mom home?" I questioned in a very uneasy way.

He looked down at my shoes, and then back at me in the eyes.

"Um, she should be home soon." He spoke.

Turn around Rose. Just give the pie to him and turn around.

"Um, can I come in the? I just want to...hand the pie to her. If not then you can just take it." I questioned. At first he had no response, but then it kicked into him.

He backed away from the door opening it, "Yeah, come in"

As I walked into the house, it was beautiful on the inside. There were chestnut wooden floors, a beautiful chandelier, and the whole house was decorated nicely.

I guess that's what they mean by "don't judge a book by it's cover".

Blaire closed the door behind me which sort of took me by surprise due to the loud slam. Of course he was going to close the door, but I didn't know it was going to be so loud.

Even though I don't really believe the rumors about him, I'm still a bit nervous being alone with him.

"Sorry" he laughed. He then lead me into the kitchen, which was even more beautiful than what I expected.

"You have a beautiful house," I smiled. He smiled back but then realized the pie I had in my hand.

"Oh yeah, um, you can place it on the counter over there."

I walked towards the granite counter he told me to place it on, left it there, and walked back to him but kept a normal distance.

The opera music was still playing in the background.

There was awkward silence between us.

"Are you the only kid here?" I questioned trying to get to know him. He nodded his head.

"Yeah, all of my older siblings live out of state," He spoke taking a seat on a stool. I started to take a seat on a stool as well, but then realized I wasn't in my house, I wasn't even invited to stay, just invited in.

"Oh, may I?" I asked pointing at the stool. He laughed.

"Sure"

I started to laugh as well thinking about how stupid I must have sounded.

"I wish I had siblings, being an only child sucks sometimes, but I guess you feel like you're an only child too sometimes..right?"

Blaire nodded his head yes.

"Even if my siblings still lived in the house, I would still feel alone," He added in looking at the counter. I feel bad for him.

My sympathy started to kick in.

I reached for his hand, and placed mine on top of it.

"We can be friends, Blaire" I smiled looking into his eyes, despite my nervousness.

No one deserves to feel like they're alone, or have no one to go to.

We all deserve to be happy.

A smile went across Blaire's face, and I saw hope in his piercing blue eyes.

Out of nowhere I heard his garage door open, and I automatically removed my hand.

"Blaire, I'm home," I heard the old woman shout walking inside with a handful of groceries. Knowing that Blaire's last name is Weston, I guess I should call her Ms or Mrs Weston now.

When she completely walked inside, and spotted me. She dropped her groceries on the floor.

She looked frightened.

"R-Rose, what are you doing here?" She questioned realizing that she dropped her groceries, and started to pick them up. I would have helped, but it seemed like she didn't want anybody's help.

"My mom made a blueberry pie for you, I brought it over and Blaire answered the door. Ms. Weston, you said all of your children were out of the house," I spoke confusingly.

"Oh how very delightful. I'll um, come by later today to thank your mom. And please, call me Anna dear," she spoke in a more calm and happy voice, but I could tell there was panic in her eyes. She didn't even answer my last question.

"Rose said she would be my friend, mom." Blaire smiled looking at his mom, then at me.

I smiled back, but right now felt awkward.

I looked at his mom seeing a sort of, blank face on her with a "smile".

"Friend." His mom whispered back to herself, it was loud enough for me to hear though.

"-Um, Blaire. How about you escort Rose out the door, I'm going to be cooking dinner soon and you need to do your homework."

"Why can't she stay-"

"No, it's okay. My dad is going to be home soon, I should get there before he does.....Bye Blaire, thanks for inviting me into your house...Bye Anna." I interrupted realizing that his mom wanted me to get out of the house for some reason.

Maybe she doesn't like me, or there's something mysterious going on.

I sensed it in her voice, and in the air.

I got up from the stool, and started walking towards the door.

The opera music was just finishing on a beautiful note, and eventually turned off.

Why would Anna lie about Blaire living here to us? Maybe because we just moved in and she didnt want to scare us off?

Blaire somehow caught up, got in front of me, and opened the door for me.

I stood still looking at him.

"See you later, Rose" he smiled. I smiled back at him, and waved goodbye.

"We can hangout soon" I responded walking out the front door.

The fresh air outside soothed me, and allowed me to relax.

I didn't here the loud door close until I reached my house, and looked behind me.

Blaire still had the door open staring at me, but then automatically shut it.
