'Nik? Lijah?' She questioned in a wonderful British accent. 'You know my brothers well enough to give them nicknames?'
'Oh I give everyone nicknames, Bekah. But yes, I know both your brothers quite well. Well enough to know that though he may never say it, Nik is sorry for sticking this into your chest.' I hand over the dagger. 'And I figure you could use it to let him see how it feels.' I give her a soft smile.
'I think we are going to be very good friends.' She said to me.
'First thing we are doing tomorrow is dragging Nik shopping. You desperately need clothes that fit this era, and don't have blood stains on them.' I tell her and then start to catch her up on the past ninety years. Informing her that Nik has broken the curse placed on him and that Elijah was daggered for his part in the plot to kill him. We talk until we hear Nik walk in which is when we both hid.
'Rebekah... ' I hear him call out. 'It's your big brother. What have you done with Jamie? Come out, come out wherever you are.' She vamp speeds to him and pushes the dagger into his heart.
'Go to hell, Nik!' She screamed. 'And I would never to anything to Jay.' I walk out slowly from where I was hidden as he pulled the dagger from his chest and dropped it to the ground.
'Don't pout. You knew it wouldn't kill me.' He tells Bekah before he turns to me. 'You gave her the dagger, you let her stab me.' He looked hurt.
I shrugged. 'You left her in a box for ninety years Nik, she would have found something else to stab you with, besides, now I've made a friend and you're fine, win win if you ask me.'
'And I was hoping it would hurt more.' Bekah told him.
'I understand that you are upset with me, Rebekah... So I'm going to let that go. Just this once. Brought you a little peace offering.' I frowned, knowing what was coming so I sat down again and pulled out my sketchbook to draw Bekah stabbing Nik in the chest. 'You can come in.'
'Stefan?' She questions when he walks in.
'Now you remember.' Nik compels him.
'Rebekah.' Stefan says as he walks towards her before Nik calls his name. 'I remember you, we were brothers.' He says to him, I looked up and I could see that Stefan's entire demeanor had changed. He was more relaxed than before.
'We are brothers.' Nik corrects. 'And onto the reason that you're here. Gloria tells me that you know how to contact the Original witch.' He says to Bekah.

'Wait, Nik.' We all turn to Stefan. 'Without my memories all I saw when I looked at you was the guy trying to kill the girl I thought I loved, and I am so sorry for trying to kill you.' He took a deep breath. 'I know why your hybrids are failing. Elena is still alive, we found a way to save her after the ritual. God, I am so, so sorry Nik, I had no idea.' Nik looked angry, I sped in front of him, making him look at me.
'Stefan didn't have his memories, he wasn't himself. All he knew was that he had to do everything he could to save the girl that both he and his brother loved. He wasn't to know that it would stop your hybrids, or that he saw you as a brother, or that he loved Bekah more than he could ever love Elena. Do not lash out at him.' I tell him, trying to calm him down. He closes his eyes, breathing deeply.
'Did you know that she was alive?' He asked me.
'I knew they were trying to save her and that she had vampire blood in her system but I had been with you the whole time. I had no idea whether or not they were successful, I swear.' I tell him. He nodded opening his eyes.
'I guess that tomorrow we will be going back to Mystic Falls then.' He says. 'For now though, I think a meal and some sleep are in order. Little Wolf, can Rebekah borrow some clothes for the moment?' He asks.
'Of course, my bag is in the car Bekah, Stefan can show you.' I tell her, knowing that Nik wants to talk to me. Once they are gone he turns to me.
'Are you okay Little Wolf? You were out of sorts this morning.' He looks concerned and I smile at him.
'Nothing I can't handle. Gloria explained why I had such a difficult full moon, and I didn't exactly like what she said. But it just means that I have to spend the full moon away from people and I guess I can manage that.' I explain.
'Away from people? Why? What did she say?' He asked. 'Is there something wrong?'
'She said it was actually quite common for werewolves, so no I guess it's nothing wrong just... inconvenient. What was it you said... You've got to love mother nature. I'm not telling you Nik, I can't, it's nothing that I can't handle so long as I am nowhere near anyone for the whole day of a full moon.' I can see that he's still worried so I take his hand in mine to reassure him. 'We'll just have to do wolf runs another time.' He smiles a little.

'Alright. I'm still worried but if it's a full moon thing then we have a month before we need worry about it. Let's go get some food and then sleep. It's been a long few days.' He kept hold of my hand, tugging me towards the car and the others.
Bekah had stolen a pair of jeans and a top from my bag, looking much better than she did before. We piled into the car and headed for the hotel where we'd be spending the night. Once there Nik compelled us some rooms, one for Stefan and Bekah and one for the two of us. We all went to our room first and had room service delivered while we caught Bekah up to speed in a little more detail than I had earlier.
We spent several hours just talking and after a while I just sat back and let the three catch up, I stayed quiet and drew them all, laughing together as though they never spent a day apart. Every now and then Nik would glance to me, as though to reassure himself that I was still there, and smile before returning to the conversation.
I drew Rebekah again, the love that shone in her eyes as she looked at Stef. And Stefan as he was now, relaxed and with light in his eyes whereas before he always looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders. Eventually, the two disappeared back to their own room and I went to the bathroom to get ready for bed. When I came back out, tying my hair up, Nik was looking through my sketchbook he was stopped on the image I had drawn of him in twenties style, feeding on a woman's wrist.
'Why do you draw such images?' He asked me. He moved onto the one of Bekah stabbing him in the chest.
'Lijah asked the same thing once, why I would draw a violent image. I told him that the violence was a part of him, a part I accept like I do all the rest. He looked like an avenging angel. This, it's who you are and in your element you are incredible. Besides, it's a good image.' I shrug. Not adding in that it was vaguely erotic, the image of him sinking his fangs into someone. 'I think that one of Bekah stabbing you is pretty good too.' He sent me a mock glare as I laughed and moved towards the only bed in the room.
'Whatever the image, every drawing is excellent, Love. You truly are very gifted.' He compliments as he continues to flick through the drawings in the book. 'The way you somehow manage to capture a person's soul, their essence in every drawing is exceptional.' I blushed, not used to such praise.
'Thank you. Though I'm sure that you are equally as talented.' I point out, diverting the attention from myself for the moment.
'I'm sure that I've never once mentioned that I was an artist.' He replies. 'Though I am no longer surprised by your ability to see things that no one else does.' I had reached the bed and slipped under the covers, sitting up against the headboard so that I could watch him as he wandered into the bathroom, his bag in his hand. When he returned he had removed the shirt he had been wearing and swapped his jeans for some more comfortable bottoms to sleep in.
He dropped his bag and came over to the bed, getting in the other side. 'You know that we'll have to go shopping tomorrow, before we return to Mystic Falls. Bekah needs clothes of her own.' I tell him and he nods.
'Yes Love, I'm well aware of the torture I will have to endure in the name of fashion tomorrow.' I laughed at his words and the look of dread on his face.
'You'll have Stefan there as well, you can face the torture together.' I inform him. 'Though I am quite glad that our room isn't anywhere near theirs.' I comment with a grin and he looks confused for a moment before his expression turns to one of disgust mixed with anger.
'That's my baby sister. Ugh. He better not touch her.' He growled. I placed a hand on his chest.
'She's a grown up, Nik and they love each other. Besides, who better for her than your best friend, a man you know and trust?' I remind him and he relaxes at my words.
'It doesn't mean I have to like it.' He says stubbornly and I let out a chuckle at his words. He smiles as well and tugs me so that I'm lying down, caged in his arms. 'This, I like.' He murmurs, causing me to blush. 'Sleep, Little Wolf. We can face the rest of the world come morning.' He says quietly and eventually I fall asleep, comfortable and safe in his arms.

8 154To The Far Shore
Post apocalyptic Oregon Trail. The apocalypse has come and gone. And come back again, and left again... nobody really knows how often. Nothing lasts forever, but nothing is ever completely gone. Which is a shame for young Mazelton, as his family has been around a terribly long time, and made an astonishing amount of enemies. Millenia's worth. So he has to run- from mobs, cannibals, soldiers, sailors, cholera, cattle, thieving sales-monks, starvation, mechanical horrors, vengeful spirits, negotiating your own marriage, and poison of every sort. Fortunately, his not terribly nice family has trained him well in the arts of core polishing. Or as you and I might know it- turning radioactive pellets into useful tools. And weapons. Updates Monday-Wednesday-Friday. Usual defensive tags applied. The goal isn't exactly family friendly, but you have probably seen worse on network TV. After the watershed. Not full blown HBO, let's say. This is the first novel I am sharing publicly, so feedback is very much appreciated and encouraged. Act 1 of the novel is completed, but do please let me know what works, what doesn't, and what you would like to see more of. Thank you, and Enjoy!
8 239Rimward Bound
Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
