《The Alpha's Human Mate》Chapter 54 Reunited And It Feels So Good

I had no idea how long the drive back to Midnight Creek was, but it was starting to feel like forever.
"Are we there yet?" I asked Andrew for what felt like the thousands time since we got into this truck. My mind link still wasn't working so I had no way to let Xavier know that I was safe and on my way back.
"Beleive me," Andrew signed out in annoyance. "I'm going as fast as I can right now so I can get away from you as soon as I can and all of your annoying questions."
"Well, maybe I wouldn't be so annoying if this wasn't the most boring road trip ever," I huffed.
I was way too antsy to nap, all I wanted to do was see Xavier and my mom and everyone and let them know that I was okay. And mostly, I wanted to tell Xavier that I wasn't scared anymore. That no matter what, I was going to come back to him each and every single time. Although I really hoped that there were no more crazy old men after me.
"I just saved you from a crazy kidnapper who left you in his abandoned, burned-down house, and you're complaining about being bored?" Andrew asked flabbergastedted. "I don't even know what to say to you, Addison."
"The number for a good therapist would be a great starting point," I shrugged in my seat. I still had that ratty blue blanket wrapped tightly around me, it was just so warm that I refused to get rid of it.
"Well maybe you can ask your boyfriend since we're just a few minutes away from the packhouse," Andrew said casually.
I shot straight up in my seat, finally taking in my surroundings. "What? But you just said--"
"That I was going as fast as I could? Yes, yes I did." Andrew laughed. "And because I was going as fast as I could I was able to get here much faster."
Ok, I finally understand why dogs want to stick their heads out the window so much, because right now I was practically pressed right up against the passenger window trying to cran my neck in every which way to see if I could spot Xavier or anyone.

Stupid not rolling -down-window, I huffed.
"Everyone should be at the packhouse," Andrew said reading my mind. "Mr. Davis told me everything about what happens if a high-up pack member goes missing, and step one is for almost everyone to gather at the packhouse to form a plan."
"I don't know if that's weird or awesome right now."
Sure enough, Andrew was right. As soon as we turned down the road to the pack-house I could see almost everyone in the pack. The closer we got to the house, the more people I saw. I still had the blanket pulled over my head so that no one could see me, but people saw Andrew. And that was all it took for even more people to crowd around us when we parked.
"Stay here," Andrew said once we parked. "I'm going to go get Xavier for you, I'm not sure if anyone else knows about Mr. Thomas yet and I don't want them trying anything."
Ok, that was a good point but I just wanted to see Xavier. "Fine."
But before Andrew could even open his door, a fuming Xavier came storming out of the packhouse with Grayson and Brad at his sides. They all looked ready to kill and I could tell that their wolves were trying to break out and take control.
"I should have known!" Xavier yelled. "Of course, you of all people wouldn't be done with trying to get revenge on my mate. I should have kept you in that damn cell until you rotted."
Ok, he was really, really mad.
Had he not noticed me? I mean, I was sitting right next to Andrew, granted I was wrapped up in a blanket, but still. Could his wolf not sense me? Was whatever it is blocking my mind link blocking his wolf from sensing me?
"Ok, I change my mind. You can get out of the car now before I get ripped in half," Andrew whisper yelled at me as the army of angry werewolves grew closer.
"You owe me," I muttered.
"I've saved your life twice!"

"Same!" I yelled in annoyance kicking the passenger door open.
Not wasting another second as Xavier stormed over, I flung open the car door and dropped the blanket that was covering me in a very dramatic fashion.
"Stop being annoying," I huffed out. I gave Xavier a slight glare before running and throwing myself into his arms, almost knocking him over.
"Addison. . ." he whispered into my shoulder as he tighten his grip around my waist to the point where I was sure there would be bruises, but right now I could care less about that.
"He just saved my life. . . again. Please stop trying to kill him now," I laughed.
I pulled back just enough to see Xavier's face, and this time instead of pure rage and murder in his eyes, I saw what looked like tears. ". . .how. . ."
"Addison!" I heard Ivy yell before I felt her arms snake around me and pull me away from Xavier.
"We were so worried," she whispered in my ear, her voice cracking.
"I'm ok," I said. "Just a couple of bumps and bruises. I'm ok."
I pulled out of Ivy's arm and gave her and Xavier a quick 360 of my dirty outfit, showing them that all I really needed was a shower and a nap.
"Andrew saved me," I told them. "I know that you might not believe me but it was-"
"It was Mr. Thomas," Grayson cut me off. "We know. Ivy told us that she had a gut feeling and then everything else confirmed it. We thought that you were at the Blue Monn pack, but we didn't find you there so we "
"I was," I confirmed. "I don't know for how long, but Andrew found me and brought me back."
"So he was in on it!" Brad fumed and tried prying the car door open. Andrew looked scared for his life as he shrunk down in the driver's seat.
"No!" I screamed out. "Andrew saved my life, Brad! He rescued me before anything could really happen."
"Then how did he know?" Xavier asked. "How did he know exactly where you were and where to find you? And more importantly, why didn't he tell us? Innocent people don't hide this kind of stuff."
Andrew rolled down the driver's window a few inches, making sure that there wasn't enough room for Bard to reach in and hit him. "I overheard Mr. Thomas talking about it and knew that if I went to you that you wouldn't have believed me. You already hate me, which I get, but I wasn't going to just sit in another cell while Addison was out there dying!" Andrew yelled out in frustration.
"Can we please just go inside so you can all question my saviour in the warmth?" I half begged. "That blanket was the only thing I could find that would keep me warm, and it really wasn't good at that."
Xavier pulled his hoodie off and practically forced it over my head after that. "I'll call the pack doctor back also." He left no room for argument as he squished me as close to himself as he could and escorted me inside.
"Brad you better not kill the person that just saved me!" I yelled over my shoulder without looking back.
I heard a defeated huff and some angry mumbling followed by what sounded like a slap and Audrey said, "stop being stupid."
"Can-" Grayson started to say something.
"No," Ivy cut off her mate before he could say anything else. "No one hurts Andrew until we hear Addison's full story."
"It feels good to be back," I smiled brightly and cuddled farther into Xavier's side.

Every citizen of the sky-cities of His Majesty's Star-Empire knows that a ship, both sky- and star-, is more then just a few bits of metal. It is the grand sum of it's hull and the crew that sail it. 'Hulls of battle-steel and men to match!' That's what the Navy's recruitment poster's claim at least. Every sailor knows that there is one more component that the city-bound folk ignore at their own peril: the soul of the ship. That it takes both man and hull to make a true ship, and that neither alone serve well or for long. In 8225 Lord Jeffrye Saltonstall the Fourth, Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps, demands semi-automated ships to 'reduce the loss of life among our brave crews', manages to convince the other politicians and bureaucrats to fund them, and gets the Office of Ship Construction to sign off on the ships as structurally sound. Dockyard workers shake their heads at the ships, muttering that they are cursed from birth, even as construction drags on. In 8230 the Explorer, first of her class, is launched. She sets out in 8233 to great fanfare on a trip expected to last six months. Neither she nor her twelve-person crew is ever heard from again. By 8235, the remaining seven Explorers are are commissioned. Lord Saltonstall managed to find crews for six of them but at the cost of mass resignations. The Night Horse, last of the Explorer class, sat in reserve as her sister-ships served well enough despite ill luck and misfortune. The Office of Ship Construction quietly issues notice that no more semi-automated ships are to be built and that all active Semi-automated ships are to be quietly retired and broken up for scrap over the next ten years. The Night Horse, sitting in reserve, is missed due to bureaucratic oversight. In 8250 Lord Ayland Wynstryngham the Eighth assumes the office of Political Lord of the Surveyor's Corps. His first act is to issue notice that no ship is to be without crew nor sit in dock or reserve for longer then required for maintenance and upkeep. The Night Horse, all but forgotten, is quietly brought back into active service. Recruiting a crew for her proves another matter entirely. What poor or desperate fool would willingly sign on to crew, much less command, a cursed ship and spend months or years in deep space? Well, you would, of course. Where else is a kid from the gutters going to find that kind of freedom in the service of His Majesty? A [participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] 2021.
