《The Lieutenant》Ten

Night had fallen all around the grounds, I looked at the shed numbers that were lit up by dim solar panelled lights, finding my way to shed number thirty.

"I was starting to think you weren't going to come." Nate whispered who already stood outside his shed. He beckoned me to follow him and together we snuck through the hedge and around the staff buildings.

"Stop" I pulled him back as we peeked out behind the shower block. We watched the commander walk across the pathway and disappear into a set of offices. We couldn't help but laugh quietly together like a pair of naughty school kids.

We got to a small gravel parking lot, army tanks lined up along the back row and staff cars parked in the next two rows. Nate walked past each and every one, stopping before a gold Lamborghini.

He moved his eyebrows up and down at me in a playful manner and then he eyed up every square inch of the car. This was a personal vendetta for Nate. I ran my hand along the smooth, metallic exterior of Axels car.

A Lamborghini suited him and so did the colour, I approved.

"Is he rich?" I gushed over the car.

"He's the Lieutenant." Nate replied as if that explained everything. Truthfully I had no idea what these people earned.

Nate slotted a black thin piece of metal down the window frame and the car unlocked. He looked at me with a mischievous smile before opening the door.

The doors opened upwards like butterfly wings instead of outwards, I was already impressed.

"Easy! Now you try with the other side." He said to me.

I took the metal and walked around the car, copying Nates exact movements but the car didn't unlock.

"Keep it straighter, more firm." He whisper-shouted from inside the drivers seat.

I followed his instruction and the car unlocked. I felt a surge of excitement run through my veins, it was this adrenaline that heated up my blood. I jumped into the passenger seat and fastened my seatbelt.

Nate pushed a few buttons on the dashboard and the roof started moving away, leaving us both exposed in the warm night air.

"Watch and learn. If you feel for this wire it will feel about three millimetres thicker than all of the others, pull it down and expose the copper inside. Then feel to left, there's one lone wire set aside from all the rest. Just put them together, twist them up and—"

The engine roared to life and Nate shot me a playful wink. "Wallah!" He said as he hit his foot down on the gas and the car started moving. My smile grew bigger, overtaking my whole face.

He drove out of the bootcamp through two big metal gates on the back entrance and we went at a normal speed down the country roads. I fiddled with the radio trying to find a decent station at this time of night.

"This car would fetch a pretty penny." Nate smirked.

"We're not selling his car Nate. For one, we need it to get back." I shut down his thoughts immediately.

I reached into the glove compartments looking through his driving license.

"Axel Thompson. He's twenty-two." I spoke to myself. He was only two years older than me.

There were gathered papers and I glanced down at the sheets out of sheer curiosity.

"They drug test him randomly, he passed them all, of course." I pointed out again as my eyes feasted over the negative drug sheets.

"They drug test us all randomly." Nate informed me.

Well, that's good to know.

"What's this?"

I pulled out a small black velvet box located right at the back and flipped the lid. The most beautiful ring looked back at me, small diamonds encrusted around the edge and a bigger round cut diamond in the middle. It gleamed even in the dark.

"Wow." I whispered.

I took it out of the box and slotted it on my finger admiring my hand out front.

"It fits perfectly." I told Nate as he side glanced over at me.

"He's engaged?" Nate asked in disbelief, I understood the shock. It was hard to think of Axel as human with an actual life away from giving out orders and punishments.

"He's not engaged or the ring would be on someone's finger instead of in his car. But maybe he plans to propose."

For some reason the thought saddened me but I shook that feeling out of my mind.

"Maybe she rejected him and that's why he is so cold because he got so hurt he couldn't stand to be around people."

I admired my finger some more, it really was a beautiful ring. It looked to be mega expensive and glistened like it was brand new. Whoever he bought this ring for he clearly loved so very much.

"Let me drive." I told Nate.

He smiled at me, he had a baby face that reminded me of a naughty school boy constantly. With dark hair, grey eyes and a smile that remained glued to his face at all times it was hard not to love his bubbly, fun character.

He pulled over the car and we switched sides, I gripped my hand around the steering wheel loving how the ring looked on my finger and then hit my foot on the gas.

The car zoomed off and I pressed harder, flooring the speed. It sounded like a freaking race car! I could feel a force pulling me back against the leather chair from the acceleration we were going at. Wind hit our faces and blew my hair wild, it was hard not to laugh out loud, overtaken with the danger, excitement and adrenaline.

"You're crazy Harper!" Nate laughed as he threw his hands up in the air like he actually was on a rollercoaster.

I pressed harder on the gas, seeing the small arrow dial of speed reach the end of the meter, somehow the shape of the Lamborghini made us feel like we were going faster than we probably actually were.

Once we turned onto the narrower roads I slowed down, dropping the vehicle to normal speeds. I pulled up along an empty field and climbed out of the car, opening his trunk to see what was inside. Nate followed me out with curiosity.

"What's in there?" He asked.

"Nothing, just a spare uniform and boots." I pushed aside his clothes and grabbed hold of a black briefcase pushing the clasp to open it up.

"A gun" I uttered with surprise.

Nate paced over to me quickly and took a look in the back of his car. A compact black gun sat between foam padding in a small briefcase. He gave me a confused look but then I closed the lid and put everything back where I had found it.

"Let's go find a fast food joint before we return to bootcamp." He suggested and honestly it was the best thing to have hit my ears since arriving here.

This time he took the drivers seat and navigated through the roads like a blunt knife cutting through butter. The car was an absolute dream, which is ironic since it's owner was an absolute nightmare.

We ended up at a roadside McDonald's drive through, it was on the outskirts of town and built for truckers and travellers passing through town. After eating slop for the past few days I was practically bouncing up and down in my seat.

"Big Mac, coke. What do you want Harp?"

"Large fries, a share box of cheddar cheese bites and a coke, no ice. Don't forget the sweet and sour sauce." I told the intercom.

"No burger?" He looked at me like I was strange.

"I don't do burgers." I informed him.

"You're strange." He laughed.

We ate our food and then threw all the wrappers on the back seat of his car before driving back and discretely placing his car in the original spot without getting caught.

He looked to the rubbish on the back seat.

"Should we get rid of it?" Nate asked and a wicked smile crossed my face.

"Nah, leave it. He'll be confused and annoyed." We both laughed before climbing out and slipping back into our own sleeping quarters unnoticed.
