It's been awhile since I've gone to a party. But my friends convinced me it would be fun. "Oh come on. I'm sure there'll be some hot guys you'll meet there." Tenaya told me. "And we can dress you up and make you look irresistible!" My other friend, Camryn told me.
"If I say yes will you stop annoying me?" I ask them. Their faces light up as they nod quickly. "Then fine. I'll go to this stupid party." I tell them. They break out into screams and laughs and conversations about how 'sexy' they'll make me.
"Guys relax, I don't want to put myself out there!" I tell them sternly. "Yeah okay whatever." They mumble. After they finish with mascara, concealer, contour, blush and eyebrows Tenaya admires the look as Camryn does my hair.
They straighten my short blonde hair and make it a little more voluminous than usual and pick an outfit for me.
Camryn decides black skinny ripped jeans with a striped black and white tee shirt and a jean jacket with my converse. And I have to say, I didn't look bad.
"Alright the Christmas party starts at eight so we should be there at around seven thirty." Tenaya tells us. We agree and later decide that we're hungry.
"Yeah, um... can I get two small cheese pizzas with one small pepperoni pizza?" I ask, pressing my cold phone to my ear. "Yeah. That'll be fifteen dollars and twenty five cents." The delivery guy says. "Sweet. Kay thanks, buh-bye." I say, pressing the red button with my thumb.
"When does the pizza get here? I'm starving." Camryn says. "Five minutes." I tell her. "And isn't Maria supposed to be coming to the party with us?" Tenaya asks. I shake my head. "She can't. She's got horse riding lessons." Tenaya nods, showing me that she heard what I said.

I jump off the couch as I hear the doorbell ring, scaring me to death. "Hey, uh that'll be five dollars and twenty f-" I grab the pizza from his grip and smile. "Yeah. I got it. Here you go, have a nice day and goodbye." I say, shoving the cash into his hands and slam the door.
"Amanda, we get it. He took an hour to get here and now you're mad. Just don't take it out on the poor door." Tenaya tells me, laughing. "I'm just so mad! How could they bring pizzas an hour late?!" I yell, stomping around and finally eating a cheese piece of pizza.
Seven thirty rolls around and I drive all three of us to the big house with purple lights shining through the windows and empty solo cups sitting on their front lawn. The good note is that there are Christmas lights and a giant Santa clause blowup snow globe beside the house.
"I think I'll be more comfortable hanging with Santa in the snow globe, thanks." I tell Tenaya and Camryn. They laugh and walk into the loud Christmas party. There was some Mariah Carrey playing and a huge Christmas tree in the living room.
"What a party!" Camryn exclaims, running off to the coconut marshmallows. I roll my eyes as Tenaya and I stand by the fireplace.
Tenaya's eyes go big as she spots someone she probably didn't expect to see. I look around confused. "Hey Ten, watcha looking at?" I ask her, my eyebrows knitting together.
"Dean." My eyes go as wide as hers. "Wait a sec. Dean is here?!" I ask her, grabbing her shoulders. "He- he's walking this-" I feel a tap on my shoulder. "way." Tenaya adds.
See, Dean has been my crush for a while now but me, being the shy girl I am, never told him. And for that he found a girlfriend. Oh, Lindsey. I mean, she's nice.

I snap my head around to be met with a pair of familiar hazel eyes. He gives me a warm smile. "Hi Amanda." Dean says. "Dean... hi." I stutter out. "I never took you for the party kind of girl." He tells me. "Oh I'm not. I'd rather be reading Harry Potter or something." I tell him. "What're you doing here then?" He asks. "Tenaya, Camryn. It's called guilt tripping. 'Oh, I helped you with your math assignment, can you please come?'" I mocked them. Dean chuckles. Tenaya mumbles that she's gonna get punch.
"Hey wanna get out of this room? It's kinda crowded." He says. "Dean, where's Lindsey?" I ask him. "Oh uh we broke up... three months ago." Guilt rushes over me as I mentally face palm. "Oh jeez I'm so sorry." I mumble. He lets out a light chuckle again. "It's fine. It wasn't working out." He tells me.
"So, where are we going?" I ask him. "To their library." He says. I giggle. "They have a full on library?" He nods. "'Fraid so." He chuckles, leading me into a dark room. He flicks on the light switch and smiles. "Here we are." He states.
There are Christmas lights hanging from each corner of the bookshelves and connecting to another with a nativity scene on the shelf. "Look at that. It's two year old Jesus." I say. "What do you mean? Isn't he a newborn?" I shake my head. "It took the wise men two years to find Jesus, so by then he was two. And see, wise men." I say, pointing to the three mini guys surrounding baby Jesus. Dean looks at me in awe.

After browsing through shelves for half an hour we walk through the kitchen doorway and notice people yelling at us. "THEY STEPPED THROUGH THE DOOR!" People begin yelling and laughing. "Wh- what?" I mumble. Dean looks up and sees mistletoe hanging from the frame of the door.
"Guess we have to..." I blush. He lifts my chin and softly presses his lips to mine, making me feel as if grenades were blowing up inside my heart. But it was nice.
We lean apart and smile. "Wow." We say at the exact same time. "That was nice." Dean says. I nod, my face turning bright red as Camryn yells "GET SOME!" To me.
"Hey c'mere." He says, kissing me once more. "Would you maybe wanna possibly if you could... be my girlfriend?" He asks. "I'd be happy to." I tell him, glancing up at the mistletoe once more before kissing him again.

The Shape of Home
The world of Alvelotyl is one of fantasy, one filled with many races, an expansive magic system exploring themes of identity, some LitRPG elements, moral ambiguity and no small amount of magical inventions similar to those in our world. Dragons with blogs showing off their hoards of treasure live alongside [Hunters] chasing Giant Toads, or [Bandits] using rifles charged with Fire Magic. The Shape of Home is a story within this world, and follows the exploits of Yuri Scalesmith, a budding Lizardfolk adventurer from a small country town with a knack for inventing, and how her life drastically changes after she’s taken from home forever following a single catastrophic event. After being taken from her previously normal life, Yuri is thrust into a world of sprawling streets, magically mutated monsters, and a crime war for territory stretching across an entire city. The Shape of Home normally updates every Tuesday and Saturday at 6PM GMT, but I'm trying out different upload times to see how people react and attract others in differing timezones. There will be two week long breaks after each story arc's Interlude. This story is also a participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge!

The Girl from the Mountain
Alexandra Bedford is a weapon, a young woman with telekinetic powers capable of leveling entire cities, born to fight in the desolate remains of post-apocalyptic North America. There is only one problem: she may be losing control of her abilities. Sixteen years after a global pandemic devastated the earth’s population, the lines in the old United States have been drawn between the Cheyenne Directorate in Colorado and the New England Alliance on the East Coast. The Directorate, of which Alexandra is a part, is a small but powerful organization dedicated to returning the country to its former glory. However, when a diplomatic mission to the New England Alliance goes wrong, Alexandra finds herself at the center of a bloody civil war. Battles are fought on the old highways and in dilapidated towns and once-great cities. And as the conflict escalates, all of North America faces the threat of being burnt away by nuclear fire. Against this backdrop of war, Alexandra tries to uncover the long-hidden secrets behind the plague, her abilities, and the two men fighting to decide the fate of the United States - Henry Bedford, Alexandra's father and leader of the Directorate, and John Martin, the mysterious figure at the heart of the New England Alliance who may hold the key to everything she seeks. None of this will matter, however, unless Alexandra can prevent the power growing inside her from taking over and consuming the very world she is fighting to save. Author's Notes: I appreciate you taking a look at my novel, The Girl from the Mountain. If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction, military thrillers, and/or cosmic horror, I think you'll enjoy this story. I completed the novel's first draft back in 2011 and made significant changes in 2016. Since then, I've more-or-less sat on the manuscript while working on other projects. Thanks to a bit of prodding, I've decided to send this story out into the wild with some touch-ups and additional revisions. I welcome any comments or criticisms, and I hope you enjoy The Girl from the Mountain!
