《My Next Door Neighbour Hisses》Prologue

The jungle at night is dark. It's always dark. Nothing can be seen. She can only beg for the moon to reveal itself behind the clouds. To see that blessed full moon to shines its light. She begs for the stars to appear through the trees. To help her guide her way home. But fate says otherwise and the merciless jungle traps her in a maze as danger follows.

The ground crushes underneath her feet. The jungle floor is full of leaves and sticks. Nothing she can do to make her run silence. But she thanks, God, that she is wearing shoes. Her breath was louder than ever, nothing she can do as her lungs beg for air every second she runs. And her beating heart hurts. Her mind and body beg her to stop.

Only when the loud hiss came close that they changed their mind and made her run faster. She cursed herself every minute for entering the jungle. For leaving the village. She wished she never stepped foot outside her home. She knew that she won't escape. Not from it. For she is in its domain. The monster's world. And it has friends everywhere.

As she continues to lose herself in the darkness, memories flash before her eyes, all those happy times. Her family, her friends. Tears fell fast from her eyes combining themselves with the sweat covering her face. She'll never see them again. And they'll never see her. They'll search for her but will never find her.

Suddenly the ground underneath her disappeared. Her body falls to the mercy of the steep downhill. The world of darkness tumbles and spins as her body gets hit by rocks and stabbed and scratched by sticks. Pain struck her everywhere. She continues to fall until finally, she was facing the sky. Her watery eyes stung as she cries in pain from the fall and her aching body.

For a moment, she was about to give up. Let it take her already. There is nowhere to hide. For it doesn't need light to see her. Her heated body was all it needed to find her. And running is impossible. In its mind, she is teasing it with this chasing mouse game. It will catch her. Her ears picked up the rushing of water. The river! There is hope.

Slowly getting up, she quickly runs along the river. The river is the life source of the villages. No doubt if she continues to run along it, she will find and village and be safe. It will not follow her into the world of man. Not in that form. She will be able to see another day. The new positive energy gave her the boost she needs to keep going.

The terrain never changed. She only had to move away from the river a few times but never far from it. It was her only hope to save herself from the monster. She encourages herself to keep going but suddenly she fell again. Her legs have shut down. Her fear rises again.

She tries to get up but her legs never rose, only massive pain. She drags herself to the nearest tree. Resting her back against it. She wished she didn't need to rest but her legs have already surrendered themselves. Her eyes once again were filled with water. She prays to God, her spirits, to any deity that a few minutes of rest could still spare her from the monster. That she would be able to get up and run once more.

Her prayer was too late sent. Movement all around her was smooth but moving closer to her. The creature's friends have found her. She couldn't see but she knows they are there. Surrounding her, trapping her. She couldn't tell if they are poison ones or the large ones. It doesn't matter, she lost. Lost to its game. She could only cry and wait. Wait for death to come and claim her. Her cries echo through the jungle. It was the only sound there was. No one could hear her. No one can help her. She is done for.

Loud hissing that was heard before behind her was now above her. It has found her. It has come to claim its prey. Her nightmare is now at its climax. And she'll never wake up from it. Slowly, she looks up to the trees. Hoping that her death will be quick. Only that there was no death, no strikes. Only glowing eyes. They were warm, inviting. Her vision was suddenly filled with the glowing spirals of warm colours.

Her fears were washed away, her tears stopped flowing, her breathing slowed as she listened to a voice. It told her not be afraid. There was nothing to be afraid of, there was no reason to fear it anymore. A soft touch warps itself around her body. Shielding her from the cold night. It pitied her. How she was cold. That she was injured from her fall. It told her not to worry. It's here now with her. No longer is she alone. It will help her. Soft hisses further soothed her mind, she feels herself beginning to smile.

However, her eyes were starting to close on their own accord, but she tries desperately to keep them open. She doesn't want to be rude and fall asleep while it's here. Hearing it chuckled. It understood her desire to sleep. Encourages her to close her eyes. To let her dream peacefully and never have to worry about her life. She gladly accepts its generosity and allowed her eyes to close. The warm spirals fade but she welcomes the dark space she enters her dream world at the moment of a loud snap.

And that is how the prey was caught.
