(A/N Picture of Periwinkle is the cover if you wanted to know. Picture above is Annabelle.)

At our orphanage, when you turn 16 you 'graduate.' This pretty much means that the leaders think you can take care of yourself enough to go to school. They provide you with a small apartment and enough money for food and water each month. But other than that you're all alone.

Today was my 16th birthday. Today I would be leaving this prison forever. I would start school at Montgomery Prep next week and move in tonight. I would leave all of my friends behind in this small crammed cabin and try to survive off of the measly amount of money given to me by the leaders.

"Periwinkle Coleman!" one of the woman call out, and I look down at my feet. My sneakers are ripped and torn, but stay perfectly clean since I'm not allowed outside. The only fresh air I get is through the small window in the kitchens. The leaders only have that window because of all of the smoke and smells that need to get out of the orphanage.

I stand up and sway slightly, gripping my cot for balance. Then I stand up straight and stare at the woman who came to see me. Her eyes were filled with pity. My own cold blue eyes looked back with a intense stare, and I pick up my bag of belongings.

"Periwinkle will be leaving us today, as it is her 16th birthday" the lady announced, and my best friend Annabelle gasped, running up to me in sobs and giving me a last hug. I tried not to break but silent tears left my eyes without permission, and I pulled away.

"I will miss you" I tell her, even though it's obvious "And when you turn 16 I will show you around Montgomery Prep." Annabelle was only 13, and had a few more years before she turned 16.

Her tears are still streaming down her face, but I turn around and face the lady coming to take me away.

"I am ready." I say, in a stone hard monotone voice. I can hear Annabelle cry behind me, and she turns me to face her.

"Here, have this..." she stutters out, and with shaky movements pulls out a locket and hands it to me.

The tears start again and I nod slowly, taking the necklace and putting it around my neck. Then I turn around and follow the woman out of the door, my mask still covering the fear and sadness I felt.

To say I'm scared is an understatement.
