THIS IS UNEDITED, I'M SORRY FOR TYPOS!

Smile is a fictional drug, that starts taking affect, when smoked. It causes a trip that is different for everyone, it varies from seeing things, getting hyperactive or strongly focused, to strengthend senses or being really giggly, along with other side affects.

It was sold and dealed by the group of the dream team only, which made it a designer drug. It makes someone addicted after about four times of usage.

"And this is Sapnap, at least that's what he calls himself. Be careful with him, he's probably one of the most dangerous person around here."

It was Karls first day as a guard in a high security prison.

His boss, Sam, had just shown him the facilities and given him some information about the prisoners.

They just passed the cell of Sapnap, he was tied up in his cell.

Heavy chains around his bruised wrists.

Yet he still gave Karl a warm smile as he walked past.

It had something bittersweet and it swallowed Karls heart whole.

"He's manipulative. I had to learn that the hard way.", Sam said, pointed at a scar on his cheek, that went all the way up to his ear, "Wanted to be nice and offer to be his friend in this god forsaken place and he thanked me with that."

He turned around to face Karl, looked at him with a dead serious look.

"Trust no one and especially not him."

Karl swallowed hardly and nodded.

"Got it.", he mumbled.

So everyday he would walk past Sapnaps cell on his patrol and try not to meet his eyes, as he checked for any abnormalities.

And everyday Sapnap would smile at him, wait for him to finish patiently.

Until one day, when Sam had his free day.

"You're really pretty.", Sapnap mumbled shyly and Karl blushed, deep voice coming as a surprise, as he checked if the cell was locked properly, "I'm always happy when it's you checking my cell instead of Sam."

"Why?", Karl asked, mentally cursing at himself for interacting with a criminal that was highly dangerous.

"Sam isn't that nice to me, I mean I can understand why, but sometimes things he does hurt. But I guess this isn't something I should tell you, but I'm just glad you were here today."

Karl nodded, more unsure than anything else and slowly walked off.

... But sometimes things he does hurt...

The sentence had been stuck in Karls head for the rest of the day and for the next night and for the following morning.

And when Sam was about to go check the cells on the next day, Karl couldn't stop himself from asking if he could do patrol duty today.

A bit skeptical Sam nodded and sat back down as Karl took the key ring from his desk, leaving quickly.

Back at Sapnaps cell, he found the brunette the same way he did every morning he had patrol duty.

Knees pulled up to his chest, wrists still covered by the heavy metal cage.

Sapnaps face lit up when he saw Karl.

"Good morning!", he said with a smile.

Karl's heart warmed up, but he quickly shook off the feeling.

He started checking the cell.

"What did you mean with Sam doing things that hurt?", Karl asked.

"He tightens the handcuffs everytime he comes here, even when they aren't loose. It hurts really bad and when I told him that he kicked me in the side. I still have a bruise of that. It happened on his last patrol.", Sapnap mumbled, "I also can't feel my hands anymore, since he put the chain on the hook above my head."

Karls eyes widened and he asked: "We're was the chain fixed before?"

"There's another hook over there on the floor. I liked that one better."

Karl didn't even debate with himself, he opened the cell door and closed it behind himself, before he kneeled down in front of Sapnap.

"You'll slowly lower you arms okay? It'll hurt if you take them down too quickly.", he looked at Sapnaps wrists, saw the handcuffs pressing harshly against the skin, "I'll loosen those up too."

Sapnap looked at him like a child looked at the presents under the christmas tree.

He obeyed Karls order, slowly brought his arms down, instantly felt the blood rushing back into his arms.

Then he felt the handcuffs being loosened up, sighed in relief.

"Does that feel better?", Karl asked and Sapnap nodded.

"You're a true angel. Thank you."

"It's no big deal. I'm sorry for Sam doing this to you."

Karl than fixated the chain on the hook on the ground, made sure it was all sturdy and inescapable.

"Can you move your fingers for me?", Karl asked and Sapnap proceeded to move one finger after the other.

He couldn't curl them up all the way, because all the blood flowing back made them swell a little.

Suddenly Sapnaps stomach made a noise.

"Haven't you had breakfast and lunch yet?", Karl asked, eyes widening when Sapnap shook his head.

"They push a tray in, but I can't stand up and get it.", he tried to explain, "I only really eat in the evenings, when they push in the trays so that they fall down on the other side. I manage."

"I'll get you something right now, it's already three pm.", Karl said, stood up quickly, his blood was boiling at this point. Yes, the people in here were criminals, but nevertheless they were humans.

Sapnap looked after him with a smile and it made Karl's heart jump again.

Sapnap didn't seem all too bad after all.

But he wasn't even back in the office, when Sam basically ran towards him.

"What was that? He could've hurt you! Karl, that man is dangerous!"

"I made an oath, to keep the criminals locked up, but not one that allowed me to abuse them. Yes, of course he could've hurt me, but that is basically in the job description Sam.", Karl bit back, "We wanted to work with dangerous people and if something would have happened that would've been my problem, not yours. Besides, he was so grateful for something that is just an act of human decency. That's shocking. No one should think human decency is something unusual."

Sam made a low noise, but didn't talk back.

Karl was right, he knew that.

He quietly turned around and walked back to his office.

Karl stood where he was, took a deep breath. He just talked back to his boss.

No one in the right mind would do that.

But now he had another problem, he quickly walked into the kitchen.

"Who of you is responsible for cell 26b12?"

"That'd be me.", a guy in an apron said, walking towards Karl.

"You are fucking fired. Get out.", Karl replied, "I also want someone else in here to get me a proper meal and I want it on this counter in ten."

"I'm fired? For what?", the guy asked and Karl looked at him with the most serious look he had in a his time here.

"Because nearly starving a prisoner to death is enough reason to fire someone."

A gasp went through the kitchen.

"I advise you to listen to me and leave."

The guy actually did, walking into a room that said staff.

Shortly after Karl had a plate with pasta on the counter in front of him.

"Thank you.", he said, before quickly taking a fork and a bottle of water, before he left.

He walked up to Sapnaps cell, opened the door and closed it behind him. He locked it twice.

He sat down in front of Sapnap, who looked at the plate like the starving man he was.

"Please tell me I'm not dreaming.", he whispered, as he looked up at Karl, disbelief in his eyes.

Karl gave him a smile.

"You're not dreaming, now open you mouth while it's still warm.", he replied, as he picked up some of the noodles with the fork.

Sapnap opened his mouth, tears building up in his eyes, when he took the first bite.

"Thank you.", he mumbled, "You really are an angel."

Karl's heart broke at the sight.

No one should be starving nor grateful when someone was finally decent enough to help them out.

"I'll bring you food every day now. I don't trust the kitchen staff."

Sapnap sobbed, a smile on his face.

"Thank you", he sobbed.

Karl wiped away the tears softly.

"It's not a big deal."

"It is, to me it's the world."

Karl put the plate aside, hugged the other one tightly.

He really was only skin and bone.

"I'm here now and I'll do my job right."

He felt Sapnap nodding, as he sobbed again.

"Okay, now you'll get some food in your system.", Karl said, picking the plate back up, after he let go softly.

Sapnap sighed and nodded.

He tried to calm down, but the tears would stop streaming over his cheeks.

When the plate was empty, Karl made him drink some of the water from the bottle, to get him hydrated.

"Are you feeling okay now?"

"More than okay, thanks to you.", Sapnap said with a smile, "You're wonderful Karl."

Karl blushed, smiled back at the criminal.

"I'm glad you feel better. In be back with dinner later today."

"I can't wait. See you later!"

Karl returned to the office, started his paperwork and told Sam that he'd take care of Sapnap from now on.

He made his point so clear, that Sam didn't even try to stop him.

He was serious about this.

In the evening, Karl walked into the kitchen, asked for the tray that was meant for cell 26b12 and with it in hand he walked to Sapnaps cell.

He unlocked the door, locked it twice behind himself.

"Hey Karl!", Sapnap exclaimed with a wide smile, when he saw the guard coming in.

He reminded Karl of a puppy that was happy to see his owner coming home after a long day.

"Hi there, I've got food and something for those wounds around your wrists.", Karl said, as he sat down in front of Sapnap, "I'm gonna take off the handcuffs, so I can have a proper look. I trust you not to attack me, okay?"

Sapnap nodded.

"I promise, I won't hurt you."

Karl smiled at him, as he took the key and unlocked the cuffs.

Gently he took Sapnaps wrists into his hands, looked at them and started to put some kind of antibacterial creme on top of the open wounds, before he took enough time to bandage both wrists carefully.

"Is that too tight?", he asked and Sapnap who had starred at him for the entire procedure shook his head.

"No it's alright."

Karl looked at him confused to why he was starring. "Everything alright?"

Sapnap snapped out of it, looked away, blushing. "Yeah, I'm good. You're just really kind."

Karl smiled at him, before he remembered something.

"You said Sam kicked you in the side, does that still hurt?"

Sapnap nodded, pulled up his shirt on the right side. A huge bruise spread all over the skin and Karl gasped.

"It hurts when I move and when I accidentally brush up against it", the prisoner said, but when he saw Karls concerned expression, he added, "but it's alright I felt worse pain."

"We'll keep an eye on that, okay? I'm worried that it might caused a fracture on your rips.", Karl said when he realized the placement of the bruise, "You can breath as usual right?"

"Yes, I can, don't worry.", Sapnap replied, "I already feel better than before, thanks to you."

"I don't know what to say, when you thank me for doing the bare minimum.", Karl confessed with a flustered smile, "I feel like no one really deserves to be treated like this. The state should be an example on how to treat people, not sink down to the level of the criminals."

Sapnap looked at the floor, nodded.

"Yeah, you're right."

"Why are you in here? Your crimes aren't in my papers.", Karl asked, as he handed Sapnap his dinner.

"Me and my friends had a network to deal smile", Sapnap said, taking a bite from the bread, "And I hired people to execute planned assassinations on those who didn't pay or got in the way of our business."

"Did you take smile?"

"Once. It was definitely a hell of a trip to say the least. I didn't even touch it after, but my partner Dream and his boyfriend 404 had lot's of fun with the drug, well until they were caught getting high out of their mind in an abandoned warehouse. That's how we got caught."

"And how long did you get?"

"59 years. Ten for each assassin I hired and nine for the drug business. Got away quiet good, cause I didn't make the drug, I only dealed them."

"Would they release you early for good behavior?", Karl asked, "You don't strike me as someone who enjoyed a life of crime."

"I really didn't enjoy it, but I got used to it. Whenever I just manipulated people into paying, my partner in crime just took his god complex out on the people he dealed with, he even killed them when an assassin was too expensive and he still doesn't see why he's locked up. I know I did a lot of wrong stuff and I know it's only fair that I'm here.", Sapnap replied, "And that attempt to get out, when Sam came in and I gave him that scratch was just me trying to see the sunlight again."

"You liked being outside?"

Sapnap smiled. "Yeah, I'd turn back time to change my decisions, just so I could sit on a patch of grass again."

Karls heart broke when he saw the expression on Sapnaps face.

He really was sorry.

Sapnap ate the rest of his dinner and said: "It's my own fault I guess, dealing drugs and attacking a guard is not really good behavior."

Karl chuckled.

"No, not really, but maybe you still have a chance to at least get out of the high security vault."

"Would you still check on me, if I was in a standard cell?"

"No, probably not, I'm only responsible for high security."

Sapnap looked him up and down.

"Then I'll stay in the high security vault."

Karl smiled at him. "That's fine with me."

Soon the food trays were collected from the kitchen staff and it was Karl's time to leave.

He put the handcuffs back around Sapnaps wrists, closing them so that they were still loose around the damaged wrists, while making sure he couldn't get out of them.

"Is the chain long enough for you to lay down in that bed?", Karl asked and Sapnap shook his head.

"No, but it's fine. Don't worry about me, you're doing enough already."

"If you don't get a proper sleep, I'm not doing enough. I'll lock the chain onto the bed instead, so you can have a good night sleep.", Karl said as he stood up.

He then helped Sapnap to stand up, as he was a bit weak in the knees after sitting day after day.

Suddenly Sapnap hugged him.

Face buried in the guards uniform, arms wrapped around his waist tightly.

"Thank you. For everything, you cared about me more within the last 24 hours than anyone else in here."

Karl hesitated a bit, before giving in and hugging him back.

"Nothing to thank me for."

Soon after Karl tied the cuffs to the bed frame, so that Sapnap could still comfortably move them.

Sapnap went to bed and Karl wished him a good night.

On the next morning, Karl clocked in earlier and went straight to the kitchen, getting Sapnaps breakfast, before walking up to his cell.

He was excited to see Sapnap again, especially after his dream last night and his heart jumped when he saw that the prisoner was already waiting for him.

"Good morning!", he exclaimed when he saw Karl walking up to his cell.

"Morning!", Karl replied smiling, as he locked the door behind himself, "Did you sleep well?"

"Yeah, I feel better than ever. How was your night?"

"I had a nice dream I guess, but it took an eternity to fall asleep."

"What have you you been dreaming off?", Sapnap asked, as Karl sat down next to him.

"I've been going to the fun fair in my dream, it was fun.", Karl lied, as he untied Sapnaps wrists, so he could eat his breakfast.

He had actually been dreaming about him and Sapnap in a flower field on a sunny afternoon. Sapnap had been laying in between the flowers, with a smile as the sun hit his face softly.

Karl had joined him on the ground and soon after he had noticed Sapnap looking at him.

He smiled an looked back at the other.

They were happy and free.

Karl had liked his dream.

"By the way, I also brought new bandages, I want to change the ones from yesterday."

"You're so nice, Karl."

Karl felt a smile tug on his lips and said: "I think you're pretty nice too."

Sapnap blushed and smiled, looked down at his plate. "Thank you."

Sapnap finished his food slowly, made conversation with Karl in the silent hope that he wouldn't leave as soon.

He also tried to make Karl laugh as much as he could, cause he liked the way he giggled.

"Okay, now let me see your wrists.", Karl said, when Sapnap had finished eating.

He took off the old bandages, saw that they were less red then yesterday and smiled.

"That looks way better.", he commented, before he started putting on the new bandages.

He was so gentle, that Sapnaps heart jumped with a spark of admiration.

And like that their rhythm started.

Karl came in three times everyday, always for about an hour, at night often even longer.

And everytime they lost a little more of their hearts to each other.

It was a silent change.

Karl gave Sapnap more freedoms, left his arms untied for the nights, taking him to the common space after everyone else was already locked in for the night, so he could take showers and sneak some snacks back into his cell.

They laughed and joked around, getting more and more comfortable over time.

And on this night, they got more comfortable than ever.

They were just back from the common space, sitting down on Sapnaps bed, still laughing about the last joke they made.

"You know what? I think this isn't a professional relationship anymore.", Karl confessed and Sapnap looked at him a little confused. "What do you mean?"

Karl moved closer.

"I think you know already.", he mumbled, as he softly touched Sapnaps cheek, "It's not professional how I feel for you."

Sapnap reached for Karls hand, squeezed it softly, as he leaned into the touch.

"I assume it wouldn't be professional if we kissed?", he asked and Karl shook his head ever so slightly.

"Horribly... Horribly unprofessional", he whispered as he leaned in, softly connecting their lips to a desperate kiss.

Quickly he moved to sit on Sapnaps lap, cupping his face with both hands now.

He was panting when Sapnap broke away.

"Before anything else happens and you want to make this official or something like that, I need you to know something.", Sapnap said, "When we first met, I planned to manipulate you into trusting me, but when you didn't even hesitate to change something about the horrible treatment, I was so... taken aback. I got to know what it felt like to be cared for and I saw what an angel you actually are for being so good to me and... and I know I didn't manipulate you, but I'm so sorry for even thinking about it."

Sapnap had been looking away for the entirety of his confession, didn't dare to meet Karls eyes, until the older one forced him to look up.

"I thought you should know.", Sapnap mumbled, "Before you decide if you want to be with a manipulative liar."

"I don't think you're a liar, I'd say that was pretty honest.", Karl replied, "Thank you for telling me, but that doesn't change a thing for me. I couldn't stop the way I feel even if I wanted to, it just feels right, you feel right."

"I hope you won't regret your decision."

"I won't and now please kiss me again."
