Sapnap never expected to fall in love with a complete stranger.
But here he was, getting a coffee every morning just so he would see the barista that stole his heart within seconds.
It was Saturday, 10am and Sapnap stood in line again, ready for his little chat with Karl.
His heart was beating so fast, that he was already able to feel a blush on his cheeks.
"Nick! Hi!", he heard his favorite barista call him and with a smile he walked up to the counter.
"Morning"
"Same as yesterday?", Karl asked and Sapnap nodded.
Karl asked that every morning, even though he knew that he would order the same abomination of a coffee, as always.
A macchiato with salted caramel syrup and an extra shot of espresso.
And Karl made it taste perfect every single day.
Everything about Karl and what he did was perfect to Sapnap, his giggles and his smile, the coffee of course and the way he remembers things he had told him.
"How was your presentation yesterday?"
"It was alright, I'll get the grade next Tuesday.", Nick replied, leaning on the counter, "Did you get your essay back, that you told me about on Wednesday?"
"No, my professor isn't that quick, probably won't get it back for another week", Karl replied, "Any plans for the weekend?"
"No, not really, you?"
"Not really, I wanted to watch that new horror movie, but non of my friends wanted to come and if I'd watch it alone I won't sleep for the next decade."
That was his chance.
This was faith, Sapnap was so sure it was.
"How about we go and watch it? Only if you want of course.", he asked as Karl popped the lid onto the coffee cup.
"Really?", Karl asked with a wide smile, "I'd love to go to the movies with you!"
Sapnaps heart was racing and he couldn't keep in his smile.
"When does your shift end? I'll pick you up and then we'll go."
"My shift's over around 5pm", Karl replied, pushing Sapnaps coffee cup over the counter, "Here you go"
Sapnap gave him a five dollar bill and said: "I can't wait for 5pm to come around"
Karl giggled and gave him the change, that landed in the tip jar as it did everyday.
"Can't wait either, see you later!"
"See you later!", Sapnap replied, before he waved Karl goodbye, leaving the café.
He had a wide smile on his face and he was absolutely sure this was the best morning of his life.
He had a date.
A fucking date, with Karl.
It wasn't official, but still, he had a date!
So the only rational thing to do for the rest of the day was stressing out about it.
When he arrived at home he tossed the coffee cup into the trash can, before going through his plan.
1. Pick him up
2. Make him laugh
3. Pay for their tickets
4. Find out what kind of popcorn he likes
5. Check in if he's comfy
6. Yawn and wrap one are around him
7. Regret step 6
8. Check in if he's still comfy
9. Marry him
10. Realize that step 9 is too much
Sapnap still couldn't wrap his mind around how quickly he had fallen in love with Karl.
He was never one to fall for someone that quickly, it normally took more than a cute laugh and a bit off kindness.
But Karl had proofed that the impossible was indeed possible.
From the first moment Sapnap saw him standing behind the counter of his favorite coffee place, his heart had decided that Karl was the one.
He felt butterflies just when he thought about that precious giggle and the excitement in Karls eyes when he saw him walk in.
Never in a million years, Sapnap would've thought that he'd even be spending more time with the pretty barista, then the time he waited for his coffee every morning.
He couldn't have been more excited and nervous that he was now.
And every hour, that would feel like a new eternity, made him even more nervous about how this night would go.
He was so distracted, he couldn't even work on his project for his robotics class on monday, even though that was one of his favorite subjects.
Around four he started thinking if the outfit he was wearing really was the outfit he would potentially want to kiss Karl in for the first time, deciding it wasn't, when he saw a stain on the collar of his hoodie.
He pulled off the hoodie and changed it against a black sweater, but that also didn't look right.
He then tried on a grey hoodie, a yellow hoodie, a red T-Shirt, a knitted turtleneck in navy blue and eventually he finally settled on an olive green sweater and black pants.
Realizing his changing had cost him half an hour, he hectically took his wallet, keys and phone before sprinting out of the house.
On the twenty minute drive he thought about what they could talk about, but as soon as he thought about Karl laughing about one of his jokes in the imaginary conversation his mind blanked.
That made him even more nervous as he pulled into a parking spot in Front of the café.
He already saw Karl waiting outside and quickly walked over.
Luckily he didn't have to start the conversation, as Karl quickly greeted him, before saying: "I'm really excited!"
"Me too, should we walk over there already?"
"Sure.", Karl replied, before they started walking, "Where do you normally like to sit?"
"Last row slightly to the right, I'd say. You?"
"Also last row to the right. It's the best view"
Sapnap nodded, slightly panicking when he felt how his mind blanked again, but he was quickly saved by Karl.
"What's your favorite movie?"
"I'd say the lion king probably. I know it's a little childish, but it's a good movie."
Karl chuckled.
"I like that answer, really cute. We'll have to watch it together sometimes, we could cry over Mufasas death together."
"Absolutely", Sapnap replied with a smile, "What's your favorite movie? We can add that to the list for when we watch the lion king."
"Mine's also a disney movie, it's Ratatouille. That movie is great and I will fight you if you say it's not.", Karl answered.
"I get that, Ratatouille is really good.", Sapnap held open the door of the cinema, before adding, "We should do a disney movie marathon sometime."
"I'd love that", the brunette replied smiling at the other.

Sapnaps heart felt like it would explode any second now and he just couldn't stop himself from smiling like an idiot.
They then walked up to the counter and Karl told the cashier what movie they wanted to watch.
"Do you pay together?"
"Yeah, we do", Sapnap said quickly passing her a twenty dollar bill.
When they went to get snacks, Karl nudged his arm. "Thank you, that was sweet of you."
"It was nothing, I just want you to enjoy the evening."
Karl smiled softly and Sapnap could swear he saw a faint blush on his cheeks.
"So, what popcorn do you want?", he asked and Karl bit his lip, debating about what he wanted.
"Either the caramelized one or the one with salt, but I don't know."
Sapnap then turned to the cashier behind the counter.
"Could you put caramelized popcorn and the salted one in one of the big bags?"
"Yeah sure, no problem. That's gonna be seven dollars."
Sapnap paid him before Karl even got the chance to protest and took the bag off the counter.
"I'll pay next time.", Karl said and Nick nodded with an undeniable smile.
Karl said there would be a next time.
"I'm fine with that."
They also ordered drinks and then went to find their seats.
"Was it okay that I paid?", Sapnap asked, suddenly feeling a little guilty for not even giving Karl the choice.
"Yeah, it's fine. Gives us a reason to go on an other date, so I can pay."
Sapnaps eyes widened.
Date. Karl saw this as a date too!
After a moment of confusion, to why Sapnap looked so surprised, Karl realized what he said.
"Oh god, no I didn't mean it like that!"
Sapnap chuckled and nudged Karls arm.
"Don't worry, we can absolutely call this a date if you want."
Karl blushed and looked down at his feet.
"Okay", he mumbled and Sapnap was sure that he was smiling while saying it.
When they sat down they realized they were alone. Well, after all most people didn't like horror movies.
"Do you really see this as a date?", Sapnap asked quietly, looking over to Karl.
His heart was beating fast and he could tell Karl was not really less nervous.
He bit his bottom lip and then, he nodded shyly.
"I was really happy when you asked me to go to the movies. Guess I kinda like you more then I should."
"Well, I was really happy when you said yes. Guess I kinda like you more then I should too.", Sapnap replied and Karl smiled.
He was adorable.
"That's cool.", Karl mumbled as he tried to hide his obvious smile.
Sapnap smiled too, when he replied.
"Yeah, pretty cool."
Suddenly the first advertisement interrupted their little conversation and with a faint blush on their cheeks, they turned to the screen.
The movie started with the usual family moves into a house that is obviously haunted.
Some things dropping mysteriously here and there and the mood of the movie was set.
During more the more intense scenes, Nick felt Karl leaning closer to him, as if he'd be safer that way.
Gently and a bit hesitant he wrapped his arm around Karl, felt how tense he was.
"You okay?", he asked and Karl nodded, too tense to say anything, when suddenly a jump scare came out of nowhere.
Karl made a noise of shock and fear, as he hid his face in Sapnaps shirt.
Sapnap chuckled, ran his hand soothingly over Karl back. "Don't worry I'll protect you from the ghost."
Karl giggled at that, as he turned his head to face the screen again, still leaning against Nicks shoulder.
When the movie came to a close they were both tired, feeling floaty and fuzzy.
They didn't concentrate on the movie, Sapnap couldn't even recall the ending.
He'd been way to interested in the pretty brunette that had been cuddling him for the last one and a half hours.
They left the cinema without a word, just comfortable silence engulfing them.
Only when they saw that it was raining, Sapnap started talking.
"I'll give you a ride home. Don't want you to get sick."
Karl gave him a soft look.
"Yeah, that'd be nice."
They quickly walked over to Sapnaps car, tried not to get drenched in the pouring rain.
Their conversation topic was quickly found, as they started talking about their favorite Netflix show.
The ride was over quickly, making them both hesitate about how to act.
Would they hug or even kiss? Or just waving each other goodbye?
Karl quickly decided, gave Nick a kiss on the cheek. "Thanks for the ride, we need to do this again sometime.", he said, before he left the car with a quick bye!
Sapnap who was absolutely stunned by what just happened, needed a moment to process what Karl just did and as soon as it clicked, he rushed out of the car.
"Karl! Wait!", he yelled over the rain and walked after him over to the door.
He pulled him close by the waist and said: "This might be a crazy thing to do, so I'm sorry in advance."
And before Karl could ask questions, he kissed him, in the rain on this saturday evening, somewhere where it happend to feel like paradise.
With a racing heart Sapnap waited for Karl to push him away, tell him this was too quick, it he didn't.
Instead he kissed him back, shyly.
"Wow", Karl mumbled, "You're a really good kisser."
Sapnap blushed and looked away.
"So are you.", he replied, "I really like you, you know?"
"I figured, after... that.", Karl said with a smile, "I like you a lot too."
They were getting soaking wet in the rain, but it seemed like the most unimportant fact on earth.
"I would love it for us, when we'd become a thing.", Sapnap said as he leaned his forehead against Karls.
Karl kissed the tip of his nose and giggled.
"I'd love that too, getting a kiss every morning at work doesn't sound too bad.", he replied.
Sapnaps heart was beating so fast it might as well had jumped out of his chest.
He looked at Karl as if he was the world's biggest treasure, as if he was art, as if he was a whole night sky full of stars.
"Can I kiss you again?", he asked and instead of answering Karl leaned in and kissed him softly once more.

Sword System Academia
2/17 NOTICE: I'm putting this on hiatus, possibly permanently. I didn't want to spam with an "update chapter", so hopefully here and in the story blurb will get enough eyeballs. There are a couple reasons for ending SSA for now. 1) I wrote the next chapter but wasn't happy with it. I've been less and less satisfied with SSA's quality the more I thought about it. Part of the reason is... 2) I am seriously thinking about trying to publish some novels to help pay the bills, since I don't have my other source of income anymore. I have never asked for anything from SSA readers, no money, not even a review or rating. SSA is written for fun to amuse myself, primarily, and I would kind of feel bad actually charging someone money for something as unserious as that. I don't think it is good enough to ask anything in return. To use an analogy from music, SSA is more like a jam session with a bunch of friends. You're just chiling and having fun playing some music. I mean, if you are Mozart or even Eminem, your jam session is good enough to sell, but for an amateur beginner like myself, haha, no. If I want to publish something, I feel like I need to go the proper route of practice and rehearsals, which might be more similar to a classical concert performance. With SSA, I work from worldbuilding notes and a loose outline, but what you are essentially getting is the first draft with lots of so-called pantsing. Pushing out a web novel like this also means it is very difficult to go back and improve things without breaking everything else downstream. I wanted to try this "jamming" approach, as it was a good way to teach me about another aspect of writing, but to move forward, I think I need to hone my "classical" techniques, which emphasize rewriting, or at least, revising outlines. 3) While I intend to try to make $$$, my actual current goal is to "get gud". I've spent a lot of time recently trying to understand the self-publishing industry, and I'm pretty sure I can make some money by using short-term strategies with my current amateur skill level. But I've seen too many authors come and go/burnout, and really, the only way that I think I can enjoy writing and still make money on a long-term basis is to become a better writer. And the next step for me, which I haven't done much before, is to spend more time on rewriting and outlines. That is pretty much antithetical to the way SSA is developing. I've always been kind of 20/80 plotting/pantsing, but I want to spend a lot more time outlining before I even start writing. SSA jam sessions don't really fit my goal anymore. If you're curious about what's next, read on... Among other regrets, I regret not finishing SSA. It's the first story I've dropped, but then again, it's the first web novel I've attempted, so I suppose that's not a surprise. I don't think traditional web novel formats suit me that well. The whole SSA story I had loosely planned (beyond a first book or major arc) is way too large as well. Big story = good for neverending webnovel with Patreons, bad for penniless and fickle writer like me. I am currently outlining a complete trilogy to another story in great detail. I want the story to end concisely, and I also want the chance to really spend a lot of time on the full outline to spot pacing problems, character issues, lost themes, and so on. I'll still share this story on RR. What I intend to do is finish book 1, flash-publish the whole thing here for a few weeks, then publish on the big Zon. Repeat for books 2 and 3. The upcoming story will be about crafting heroes. The backdrop is an isekai-like setting, where elves will summon humans to their world as heroes, but the whole hero crafting business is still in its infancy. The elven mage researchers are figuring out how to imbue heroes with power, while the heroes are trying to figure out how to use the powers that they gain. Humans are the best hero templates because they are blank and have no intrinsic magic. Or at least that what the elves thought. The human MC has his own secrets... There will be some similarities with litrpgs, but I would call it more a progression fantasy or gamelit story. For example, the stats are very low, at least initially. Say we have a stat called Str. Going from Str = 1 to Str = 2 is a huge deal. Also, going from Dex = 0 to Dex = 1 is an even bigger deal. I guess you could call it a "low-stat litrpg", haha. Also, the heroes won't be gaining stats simply by killing things or leveling up. You can't increase stats arbitrarily, either. There will be rules to how stats can increase, and how they work with each other. The elven mages will be figuring out these rules in order to craft stronger and stronger heroes. Some inspiration will be from cultivation magic systems, but there won't be overt cultivation, at least for now. A theme I really want to explore is the idea of interactions. That includes things like hero crafter vs hero, tactics vs strategy, skill synergies, racial interactions (dwarves, elves, etc), and son. Yeah, so hero crafting. I'm super excited about this project and venturing into publishing. If you want to check out the upcoming story, you can follow my RR author profile to see when it drops here. Finally... THANK YOU TO EVERYONE! I'm very sorry that SSA is stopping, but I hope at least some of you will find the next story at least as enjoyable, if not more. Thanks to all the readers who gave SSA a shot. Big hug or solid fistbump to all of you, whichever you prefer! I hope this message is not a downer but an upper, because I am psyched!! -purlcray -------------- BLURB: Talen, youngest Master of the Koroi, makes his way to the Empire's capital to salvage his clan's fate. But the bustling city has few opportunities for the traditionalist. For the old sword clans are fading. With the rise of alchemy, gold can purchase strength that ordinarily took years of training to cultivate. Sword artists, once rare and accomplished, are quickly growing in number, especially among the wealthy noble class. Even with such alchemy, though, no one has advanced to the rank of Grandmaster in countless years. Talen's true dream is to walk the path of a sword artist to the very end while fulfilling his clan duties. And then the Swordgeists return, fabled founders of all sword arts, gods who had touched the world long ago and vanished. These myths turned into reality warn of a coming threat. Alongside this warning, they issue an invitation to the Sword System Academy, a path to power beyond the mortal realm. But first, they will hold an entrance exam... Story notes:Sword System Academia blends elements of western and asian fantasy such as xianxia and litrpg. I took parts from different genres I enjoyed and twisted them into my own creation. There will be an explicit system, both of the litrpg kind and the hard(ish) magic kind, but it is embedded within an academic structure that will develop over the course of the story. This is my attempt to design a unique type of system, the System Academia.
