《In the Sky with Diamonds » s. hyde》epilogue

It was New Year's Eve and just pass 11. The petite girl fidgeted in her taxi cab as it drove through town and passed familiar landmarks of her childhood. Nothing had changed, yet, everything felt so different. She was a bit different—a bit less naive, a bit more experienced but still with obnoxious hopefulness.

To be honest, she wasn't even sure what she was coming home too. Eric was off in Africa; Donna had gone blonde and was with a new guy with a lot of hair; Kelso was in Chicago working security for Playboy, and raising Betsy; Jackie was in Chicago for work, and apparently had met up with George recently; Fez had even found a girl for himself and a job at a salon. Steven had met his real dad and found out he was biracial—which explained a shocking amount, and was even a business owner for a record store.

Her friends from college had all yelled at her when she decided to ditch their plans for New Year's in the city to watch the ball drop for some dingey town in Wisconsin called Pot Place or Pointey Palace or whatever the hell it's called. There was a blizzard last Christmas that ruined her plans. And over the summer she still avoided her old home in exchange to study abroad in London. She had become an RA this year and had to stay in the dorms over the holidays to help the underclassmen. And Point Place was home, it was family, and she had a promise to keep.

Lucy Forman rolled down the window of her taxi cab and placing her arms on the door, resting her chin on them and letting her hair whip around in the chilly night breeze. She took a deep breath as she anticipated what the night, the new year, and the new decade held in store.

Checking the clock and the meter as the taxi came to a screeching stop, Lucy saw it was 11:25 and paid the man. She had her bags in hand as she jumped out of the taxi, kicking it closed with her boot and rushing to the door as her green coat trailed behind her in the wind.

Inside, Donna had rushed out to the driveway to get some air, and Kitty sat on Red's chair, folding her hands and sighing, "Speaking of daughters—" but she was cut off.

Bursting through the door and dropping her bags, throwing her hands up in the air, Lucy cheered, "I'm home!" Mrs. Forman's small frame practically leaped from the couch to smother her daughter in hugs and kisses. "You changed your hair!" Lucy laughed with small tears pricking at her eyes as she hugged her mother.

Jackie stood not far behind and the pair of friends shrieked in greeting—Jackie praised the girl's new hair cut, which was now shorter; and Lucy giggled in excitement about the brunette's relationship with a certain Australian smiling by the staircase.

Red stood by the piano with Bob, wearing a tight smile and trying to repress the relief he felt at seeing his daughter again. Lucy tilted her head with a slight grin, "Hi Dad," she whispered as she pulled him into a hug. The stoic man reciprocating and kissing her head.

The blonde turned about the room and saw Hyde standing with a beer in hand and a slight tug on his lips as the girl turned towards him. Lucy smiled for a moment before it quickly fell to a frown, "What the hell is on your face?" she teased with a dead-serious tone in reference to the mustache he had grown.

"Oh shut up and take a beer," he shook his head, tossing her a can. "I'll shave it in the New Year."

Lucy rocked on her feet, standing against the wall beside him as she opened her drink. Taking a sip she asked casually, "Your date won't mind kissing you at midnight with that?"

"Don't have one," the curly haired boy responded casually. Looking at Lucy out of the corner of his eyes, sure she had changed her hair, and sure she was some big city girl now—but it was the same old easy-going, adventure-loving LSD.

The kitchen door swung open as a certain tall, wreck-less boy stormed in. "Oh, Mr. Forman, can I light this off in your house?" the boy waved around a large firework.

"Sure, and then I'll light my foot off in your ass," Red shrugged.

"Nothing changes here huh?" Lucy laughed.

Hyde nodded, "And that my friends, is the last foot-in-ass of the decade! Cheers!"

"Is that a box of bang-snaps in your pocket or are you just excited to see me Kelso?" Lucy kissed the boy on the cheek.

"Both," the boy laughed loudly, taking out a box of the small fireworks. "Hey! Hair cut buddies!" the pair high-fives, laughing slightly.

"So," Lucy nudged the boy with a wink.

"Nah, Luce, we shouldn't do it on New Years," Kelso sighed exasperated.

"I wasn't going to say that you pig," she wacked his arm, "How's Brooke and Betsy?"

At this, Kelso's eyes lit up, "Great! Betsy can say burn! And Brooke is doing great in college!" He began to whisper lowly, "And uh, between you and me, I'm proposing tomorrow when I get back," he pulled out a small red box from his other pocket. The blonde squealed as she took a peak at the ring and hugged Kelso, "I've been holding onto this for months, waiting for the right time."

Lucy walked through the house and went out to the driveway, where an unfamiliar blonde sat on the Vista Cruiser forlornly. "So, should I go red now or something because this feels weird," she joked as she stood in front of her old friend.

"Hey!" Donna worked up, reaching out to pull Lucy in for a hug. "I missed you! Why didn't you tell me you were coming you jerk! I might've left for college already!"

Lucy pulled away excitedly, "You're going to Madison?" Donna nodded eagerly and Lucy cheered before taking another drink of her beer. "What's got you down Goldilocks?"

Donna looked down to her hands, "Uh, nothing, everything's just weird...But it's better now that you're here."

Lucy smiled and hugged the girl again, "I'm gonna go in, gotta catch up with Jackie. But you gotta come in and get another drink, alright? Don't mope about my idiot brother anymore," she called as she walked back to the house.

"I'm not moping!" Donna yelled.

"Whatever!" Lucy laughed.

Lucy was pouring herself a drink behind the bar and laughing loudly when the door to the kitchen swung open and her scrawny twin exclaimed, "Damn, you are turning into Mom!"

The blonde's eyes went wide in annoyance and then registered that she hadn't seen her brother in over a year before she bolted across the room and pulled him into a tight hug. "You dumbass! You missed your flight! How the hell did you do that?"

Eric shook his head and laughed wryly, "I take it back, maybe you're turning into Dad."

The boys all mysteriously disappeared after Eric's return, all chattering and getting supplies ready for The Circle and to shave Hyde's 'stache. Lucy paced hesitantly, debating if she should join them or not before Jackie pulled her up the stairs to her old room. The night went on as the girls all chatted and caught up on eachother's lives.

Jackie talked about how George's internship actually brought him to Chicago and that's when they met up again; for them, dinner catching up had turned into dinner the next night, and a date and then another date. And then Jackie realizing that George was the type of guy she had always been looking for: handsome, hardworking, and caring. This part, Lucy knew because both had panicked and called their friend in New York. But Lucy never really saw a reason to give her blessing and the phone call with Jackie ended quite shortly when Lucy cut her off with, "Unconditional remember?" And Jackie's light laugh from the other line replied, "Always."

Donna talked about her brief time with Randy. How it never really felt right and she realized she had been wasting the last year of her life in the town she had once wanted to leave so badly. But she was hopeful, she felt ready to take on life on her own.

Lucy went on and on about her time in college and what New York was like, but Jackie yelled in protest when Lucy remained adamant that there wasn't anyone. She had really used college and London to branch out and experience new things, and was much too preoccupied to even think about boys.

Soon, Kitty called the girls down and told them that she was going to pop the champagne soon. So the three highschool friends rushed all the way down to the basement to fetch the boys.

"We knew you burnouts would be down here," Jackie smiled.

Lucy let a puff of smoke out as she giggled, "Oh man, my New York stuff is way better. After the New Year, we'll celebrate."

Donna shook her head, "Come on, Mrs. Forman is about to pour the champagne."

They all got up and Eric said, "Hey, last one up calls Red a dumbass."

And soon, chaos seemed to ensue as everyone pushed past one another. Hyde pulling Kelso down and forcing him to last.

In the living room, there was so much commotion as everyone gathered by the T.V. There was two minutes until the drop.

"Hey," Lucy said, passing Hyde his champagne, "So I was thinking, remember that deal we made?"

"Which one," Hyde asked, furrowing his eyebrows as he took his shades off.

Fez started prematurely counting at a minute.

"The one we made when we were 16 and you were gonna run off with that Chrissy chick. The one about getting out of here someday," Lucy reminded him, he nodded for her to go on. "And I know I'm still in college, but uhm—" she shuffled her feet slightly and Hyde couldn't help but smile at the girl's familiar antics. "It's still you. And I learned that I can be on my own, and I can be happy on my own, but the thing is that—that when I think of the future—I want to do all these things with you."

Hyde nodded and stepped closer to her, brushing her hair behind her ear, "Your minute is running out doll."

Their family and friends were now counting down from ten.

"Come to New York with me. After graduation we'll travel anywhere—everywhere—doesn't matter if I'm with you."

"Five!" Everyone chanted. Their voices drowning out as the old flames drew closer.

"I missed you so much," Hyde whispered lowly, his hand finding her waist as a smile grew on her lips. "Hell yes LSD."

"One!" Everyone cheered in celebration. And with that, the reunited couple sealed their deal in a kiss.
