《Pretending》Chapter Seven: My First Kiss Went a Little Like This

I didn't think I would ever care this much about our soccer team winning. High school sports never interested me. That could've been because I had to watch every game alone, but still.

"Let's go, WestShores!" I yell alongside the sidelines, throwing my pom-poms in the air. I have managed to land every jump and kick during the halftime show without passing out. Now I get to enjoy the rest of the game on the sidelines, cheering.

Adam and Warner were amazing together on the field. It was like they knew where each other were without even looking, I knew Warner was a soccer star in high school but I never bothered to actually watch him play.

I wasn't the only one who noticed though because the girls on the team certainly had their eyes glued to Warner as well.

"God he is so fucking hot. You are so lucky." Emily another freshman cheerleader says to me.

"Lucky?" I ask.

"Aren't you guys together?"

I laugh and accidentally let out a snort. Emily looks at me confused about what is funny.

"No we are definitely not together we are just... old friends." I cringe at the word friend but as soon as the words leave my mouth Emily grins.

"Well, then you NEED to introduce me because that man is fine."

I nod knowing it will be awkward but I was desperate for good girlfriends so I was willing to introduce them if that meant extra friend points for me.

Finally, the game ended with Westshore Winning 3-1. When the last whistle blows the crowd runs onto the field to celebrate. I see Emily heading straight to Warner to congratulate him so I make my way to a different player.

Adam is already grinning at me when I make eye contact with him. I run over cheering and before I know what is happening he has picked me up and twirled me. I protest and try to kick my legs out but he doesn't seem to notice. I have never been picked up by a guy before. In elementary school, we used to play chicken fight in the pool and I was the only big girl so I was always on the bottom.

One time a nice new kid named Charlie felt bad for me and tried to put me on his team for it. I remember it to this day, I got on his shoulders underwater and everything seemed fine but as soon as he stood up and felt the weight of me he couldn't even stand up. It then became a competition with the guys to see who could hold me up, but none of them could do it. I tried to laugh it off with them but after that day I went home and cried in my room all night.

It is hard to not let my past control my actions now. I should be focused on the fact that a cute guy is holding me but instead, all I can think about is if he thinks I am heavy. Is he struggling to hold me up? I continue to overthink until he puts me down.

"Thanks for cheering me on Jules, you must be my good luck charm." he grins at me and I smile back. I see that he caught onto Warner's nickname for me, they were best friends so I guess that makes sense.

"Yeah, I will actually be taking credit for your goal tonight. You wouldn't have scored without me standing on the sidelines." I flick my hair trying to ignore how close we are. I am not used to being this close to guys like Adam. his fluffy brown hair is swept to the side with sweat and his eyes are a perfect chocolate brown up close. I feel my face go red from him looking at me with those eyes.

"In that outfit, you are more of a distraction than a good luck charm." Adam's voice is low enough for just me to hear and it doesn't help with making my cheeks less red.

"Juliet there you are!" Tracey's voice cuts in, breaking the moment off.

I whip my head around trying to act normal but I know I probably look guilty. Behind Tracey stands Warner who looks very uncomfortable.

"I want a picture of you and Warner. You look just like a movie couple." She smiles and I let out a cough. Warner cracks a smile at my flustered face.

Tracey guides me next to Warner. I don't know what to do or how to pose. I know I need to suck in but what am I meant to do with my face?

As if he can hear my thoughts Warner puts his arm around my shoulder and presses me against him. These men have no idea the effect they have on me. I hate getting my picture taken so I can't help but tense up.

Warner feels my body tense and I see his smile fade a bit. Guilt washes over me, I don't want him to think I was tense because of him. I just hated photos of myself.

"You guys are so cute now smile on 1...2...3." Tracey's camera flash almost blinds me but I manage to smile.

"How do I make this my home screen" Tracey shoves the camera in Warner's face not really giving him a choice. He smiles at her and then gives me a look that says 'I'm sorry'. It is kind of funny seeing Warner with his mom like this, it makes him seem more...human.

That is until he sees his dad waiting by the stands. His whole body tenses up and his face turns stoic. His dad doesn't look very happy even though our team had won and Warner played amazing. If his dad was anything like he used to be, he was never happy with Warner's performance.

Warner walks his mom to her car and as soon as they are out of sight a few of the soccer team guys walk over to me like they have been waiting for Warner to leave.

"Now that your bodyguard is gone we wanted to make sure you are coming to the after-party tonight, it is going to be on our dorm floor." one of the guys I recognize from my dorm as Max smiles at me. I have seen him around the kitchen a few times and he has always been nice to me.

The last thing I wanted to do was drink and wear a crop top but old Juliet would've killed me for saying no to a party full of hot guys so I nod.

I didn't realize how tiring having a social life was until now. Here I was hungover from the night before getting ready for another party. Maybe Jiggly Juliet was onto something with the whole introvert no friends thing.

I can hear people already crowding the hallway and common room starting to drink and I haven't even gotten changed yet. I had taken a 'break' meaning I was face first in my pillow.

Someone knocks on my door and I ignore it but they knock again so I raise my head to yell "The door is unlocked!"

I put my head back into my pillow assuming it is just Abby but I hear a deeper voice.

"Are you dead?" Warner pokes the back of my head and I swat at him.

"What are you doing here?" I try to hit him while also staying face-first in the pillow.

"Because I am a nice neighbour and Abby said you weren't answering her texts." I can feel the weight of Warner sitting at the end of my bed.

I remove my face from my pillow and look up at Warner, he seems amused at the sight of me. I am in my grinch pyjama shorts with my matching grinch slippers.

"I like this look much better you look like my Jules." Warner tousles my hair as if I am a five-year-old.

"Yes you are hilarious, I was getting ready I am just taking a break." I yawn mid-sentence getting up to fix my hair but it is a bird's nest now thanks to Warner.

"Well, I was given strict instructions by Abby to make sure you are up and ready in about 10 minutes so let's make this snappy." Warner goes over to my closet and picks out a turtleneck throwing it at me.

"Put this on and let's go." He doesn't even turn around, just crosses his arms and stares expectantly.

"First of all I am not wearing a turtleneck this isn't a church event this is a dorm party. Second of all this isn't a free show you could at least turn around." I throw the turtleneck back at him and he dodges it with ease.

"It was worth a shot. College guys are gross." He continues to sort through my wardrobe.

"But you are a college guy, so you are calling yourself gross."

"I am gross."

"Well, at least you are self-aware."

There was a comfortable silence between us sorting through my clothes until I speak up.

"What about Adam? He seems nice do you think maybe-" I know I messed up before I even finish my sentence. Warner's entire body tenses up and he closes his eyes so I can't see anything he is feeling. A few seconds later he is back to normal.

"Here wear this you have always looked beautiful in red." Warner hands me a shirt and says nothing else walking out my door.

I owned a lot of red, only because in grade eight at our school's Christmas concert the exchange student in our class wrote me a love letter that said I looked beautiful in red. Since that day I make sure to wear red at least once a week. It is sad that I have kept up with it but I really needed that compliment when it was given to me.

I fix my hair and put on some makeup. At least the party was right outside my door so If I got tired I was literally steps from my bed.

I walk out to music blaring and a bunch of randoms all over the hallway. After a few minutes, I find Abby who is standing next to Emily from cheer.

"Hey, girl I am ready for my introduction now." Emily wriggles her eyebrows and points to her boobs which are now at her chin thanks to a Victoria's Secret push-up bra. I respect the hustle, Emily knew what she wanted and she was going to get it.

"Yeah for sure, next time I see him I will bring him over." I scan the room and don't see any signs of Warner anywhere.

Instead, I find Adam leaning against the wall, he has a drink in his hand and is chatting with Amy so I figure I shouldn't interrupt.

I pour myself a shot to give me more confidence. I'm not the best in social situations and drunk Juliet seems a lot better in them than sober Juliet. Because of the lack of food I had today, I have room in myfitnesspal for alcohol calories.

After some liquid courage, I see Emily and rush over to her. "I am ready to introduce you to Warner come on let's go."

I don't even know where Warner is but after a few minutes, I find him next to Adam who thankfully isn't talking to Amy anymore. Luckily the liquid courage helps so I stride over with Emily who has linked her arm with mine.

"Hey, guys I just wanted to introduce you to Emily. Well, more importantly, Warner, I just thought you guys would really get along."

"Is that so?" Warner looks Emily up and down and I can tell she is enjoying it.

"Yeah, maybe you could pour her a drink?" I don't really give Warner a chance because I have guided Emily right into him.

He looks conflicted but once Emily strokes his arm he guides her towards the drinks. I watch them walk away and notice he looks back at Adam and me not once but twice.

"I didn't know you were a matchmaker." Adam brings my attention back.

"Juliet! Oh my god, you have to hear this." A drunk Abby is suddenly in between Adam and me.

"What?" I ask steadying her next to me but she stumbles again so Adam grabs her other arm.

"You know Joey in our building? He is super hot and he is super into you, you have to kiss him you have to do it for me." Abby was slurring her words but they were pretty clear to Adam and me.

"I think we need to put you to bed." Adam holds her right side and I hold her left as we walk down the hall to Abby's room which is locked.

"Where is your key Abby it's locked," I ask her but she is barely awake.

"I will tell you if you kiss Joey." She giggles and I roll my eyes. I don't even know a Joey, so I have no idea what she is talking about.

"Fine, you will sleep in my room then." I look at Adam and he nods in agreeance. After a few minutes of struggling to get Abby onto my bed, we finally succeed. I tuck her in, give her a kiss on the forehead and turn off the light.

I go to open my door but Adam puts his hand over mine on the doorknob. I pull back and laugh nervously.

"Move your hand I have to go kiss Joey to make Abby happy." I joke but Adam frowns.

"I am not letting you leave this room if you are going to go kiss some douchebag."

"What I'm sorry, why do you care who I kiss?" I ask and he looks at me like I am stupid.

"Because I want to kiss you." His words are plain and simple but take me aback, I didn't think someone as hot as Adam would ever want to kiss someone like me.

"Me? You are so out of my league why would you want to kiss me I-" I can't even finish my sentence because Adam has held my face an inch from his. I am glad we turned the lights off because my face is redder than a tomato. I can see his lips and that's all I can focus on.

We stare at each other for a few seconds both waiting to see what the other will do first. I want to kiss him, the alcohol gives me the courage to press my lips gently to his. Suddenly all of the "how to kiss" videos on youtube pay off, the kiss is soft and gives me butterflies. Our lips move perfectly and I don't want it to end. I can't help but smile when I pull back. Adam was smiling right back at me.

"I have wanted to do that since the day I met you." Adam whispers and I can't even form words to answer him. I couldn't have asked for a better first kiss.

"I might just stay here with Abby to make sure she's okay, but thank you for helping me and thank you for well-" I press my lips to his one more time taking in his soft lips and minty breath.

After Adam leaves, I lay down next to Abby with the biggest smile I have had on my face for a long time.
